Other Games / Re: Remember Tomorrow - an indie 4x space strategy game
« on: August 31, 2014, 06:40:30 pm »
Rumbled my way through the tutorial and post-tutorial squishing of the cats. Faintly impressed by what I've seen -- most things are very smooth, automation and whatnot is pleasing, etc., so forth, so on. Definitely feels like there's work still ahead, but what's there is quite well done.

Various thoughts:
-Enemy AI that's fleeing a space battle should probably be running away from enemy forces instead of toward them, ha. Looks like they just head toward the top right-ish of the battle map, but that tends to be directly toward hostile forces and that seems... a little silly.

-Economic plans that just won't work (like scientific on an exhausted planet, ferex) should probably be greyed out or somethin'.

-Realize it's probably for future builds, but I definitely missed "civilian", so to speak, research. Lots of shooty stuff, but very little in the way of improving the lives of my people, heh. Improved research/industry/etc. research would be nice... probably stuff for improving population limits, health (for whenever/if random events get in, resistance to plague or whatev'), stuff like that. High-end research enabling things like transhumanism/roboticization (population starts eating part metal instead of only food, with potential bonuses to research/industry/ground combat), planet construction. I've always preferred the sort of kingdom building aspect (building a small group to great heights, as opposed to empire building by way of conquering everything) to 4x games over the overt steamroll errytin' with dakka part. More stuff like the orbital research/factory things, basically. Terraforming would be wonderful, heh.

Of course, that sort of thing might not be intended for how the game is being planned out, and that's definitely okay. S'just something I personally enjoy seeing.

Mm. Yeah, I've actually seen (though, fortunately, not played much) a few games that made terrible games but pretty decent art. Hell, most of the decent VNs or adventure/point&click games would fit in that description fairly well, even outside the nominal "art game" designator. Not so much "so it's okay" as "this game can be evaluated under a different set of standards", which I guess is what makes it an art game? Dissonance involved in holding something to two, possibly contradicting, sets of heuristics regarding quality would definitely make art games more memorable.

Which is surprising, since she is far from a trained hunter.
The thing that some people seem to forget, sometimes, is that there is no such thing as a cat that isn't a psychotic murderbeast. Even the ones that are declawed are fairly capable of killing things. Seriously, they're basically hardwired killers, one and all. They don't need training, they just need functioning lungs.

There are soo many games but they are almost all terrible!
There we go. Statement made accurate. Don't think I've noticed art games being particularly prolific or notably outside the curve in regards to the junk:playable ratio. Maybe they're just easier to notice?

... that was a terrible party, then. Nothing of value lost.

Is madoka. Seems pretty accurate, to me.

I have no idea why, but snake crossdresses impeccably. There's something disturbingly enthralling about the MGs snakes in a skirt.

...I used to enjoy playing TF2 and NS1, until someone explained to me that my habit of muting/shutting out communication with all other players was extremely rude and disruptive to teamwork, and probably making people angry with me.
State of multiplayer being what it's always been, it really isn't. On either side. I've yet to see a MP game -- any MP game* -- where communication or lack thereof actually meaningfully impacted teamwork. It can help, or (much more likely) hinder, but actually working with your ruddy team helps a lot more than wasting time and effort nattering about whatever.

And beyond the teamwork (for which communication isn't substantially necessary), you are under no burden to engage in conversation. Game isn't really the place for it (that's what chat rooms/teamspeak and stuff like forums are for), and you are in no way being rude by not involving yourself in unnecessary communication.

As for people getting angry. Folks who get angry at someone who's not deliberately disrupting the game (which being non-communicative isn't, so long as you're still being responsive to what your team is doing, or, at the very least, not substantially burdening them.) are not people who have opinions that are worth any consideration, at least insofar as the world of gaming is concerned.

Point being. Whoever told you that was substantially mistaken. Go mute everyone and have some fun. You weren't being rude.

*I'm sure there's a few out there, somewhere, but they're massively in the minority.

Yeah... don't have the latest expansion, but otherwise good to show. Been out of the cycle of mind-numbing pain and brain-addling medication for a few days now, which is quite nice.

What if you're playing a co-op game like Left 4 Dead?
With those, you learn to work together without direct communication. Not sure what, if anything, the game has insofar as signaling goes, but you can always improvise stuff like "Go this way" (point, run back and forth a little), "shooting at stuff over here" (shoot things), and whatnot, and pay attention to what the other player(s) are doing and support them without outright talking about it.

Basically, with any particular game you've generally got pretty specific goals and a relatively limited number of ways to achieve them, with an even smaller subset of ways that are actually notably effective. You don't really need to talk or listen to work in parallel in such a situation.

And if things go south, well, you can't hear them complaining so :V

17529
As always, the first thing you do when playing online multiplayer with people you're not somewhat familiar with is to immediately mute everyone else playing. Always. Every game. You're there for smarter bots, not interaction with the dregs of humanity.

No clue why, since it took like no effort whatsoever (and zero manual reg editing) to install UA in similar conditions, for me. Was using a legit cd-key (not that I'm saying I was using a non-legit actual copy, but I will but note that a recent-ish steam update completely fucked mods for DoW, and I had a steam copy of soulstorm, sooooo...) but I have no idea why that would make a difference. Actually, WA and base DoW were completely uninvolved and I have no idea why you'd need them >_> Does UA even respect the whole "need other standalones" thing for multiplayer?

I can also reliably inform you that electrical fencing also isn't terribly expensive and, if you're careful, can be re-purposed to keep jackhats from sticking their hands where they shouldn't be. That's going a bit far, though.

Just... keep head down, heart up, do what you need to until you can get out, and then disown the buggers and move to the other side of the country. Best plan.

Though somewhat tangential to the discussion, I guess.

I can't even remember the last time I saw a door in the inside of a house that had a lock on it, other than washrooms.
Lockable door knob's like less than 10 bucks at walmart (so almost certainly under 20, regardless of where you shop in the states), in my area, and can be installed in <10 minutes (if you're somewhat practiced at it -- less than a half hour even if you're taking awhile.) with nothing but a screwdriver (probably phillip's head). Easier'n pie.

Just throwing that out there, heh.

Yes, thank you dream brain. Pokemon's Together Forever is the proper soundtrack to electrocuting dozens of people to death with a fuckoff huge lightning cannon.

Pretty sure there's even a few that remain unlocked, heh.
