General Discussion / Re: Things that made you go "WTF?" today o_O
« on: June 26, 2014, 09:05:46 pm »
Today I have tried fried, pseudo-de-salted, salt pork.* It is quite possibly the most tasteless food I have every tasted. It tastes like lack of taste.

Grandmother was like, "Hey, cheap meat. Consume!" and I'm like, "If I ever cook this, it will be baked and basted with syrup."**

*Take salt pork. Soak in water for several hours to draw most of the salt out(?). Bread it, and fry it.
** To be fair, that's actually my response to pretty much all meat, but whatever.

Well... do come back, if you're able. Good luck with endeavors, if not.

In own sads, just got solid confirmation the battery on this laptop is completely shot. Lappie is now entirely dependent on charger for power. Bleh.

... that's going to lead to some amusing attempts to incriminate each other in MP games, isn't it.

E: Though now I kinda' wonder. If both nations hit the same province on the same turn with the spell, and the first one conquers the province... does the second group join up with the first, or attack it?

Possibly not balanced enough, quite yet, but in any way balanced, yes. Most of their good stuff is either very expensive (in either gold, resources, or both), old, temperature locked, or all of the above -- and almost none of them are particularly tough without some help. Something like half their stuff is ice-forged, but the other half can only be recruited in a province with heat scales -- meaning you either have to mostly-forgo half your army, burn gems on temperature effecting rituals, or accept half of it being relatively ineffectual. As noted, their temples are 800 bloody gold -- they generate fire gems, sure, but each individual one costs nearly as much as a fortress. Their sacreds are pretty awesome, but they're also capital only, really need a good bless (Major water would probably be ideal, since they're both flying with a charge attack, but they want at least minor earth and probably some degree of N or D if they can swing it, too.) and the really sexy one is 125/60 and can only be recruited at heat >=1.

Basically, they've got a lot of neat stuff but their pretty much everything* costs a shitload, and they're in that unenviable position where they want both scales and a bless, and both heat and cold. They've got a lot going for 'em, but using it all is more than a little bit of a juggling act.

*Except those delicious flying composite bow users. 10/7, base 12 prec, composite bow? Yes, oh gods, please. Of course, their flaming arrow casters can't fly, but...

M'major problem with 'em is basically every bloody caster of worth is old. S'kinda' annoying, and means probably having to at-least side invest in blood (more micro ;_;) for age reduction/maintenance junk. Fairly cheap disease healing summons do help a bit, but... bleh.

Waking Mars is a metroidvania? I picked it up in an indie bundle once, but in the hour or so that I played it came across to me more as a as a point-and-click adventure than a metroidvania... (It's not quite parallel with actual P&C games, buts exploration and clicking.) Maybe I didn't get far enough?

Disclaimer: I feel combat is an intrinsic necessity for any "metroidvania" label.
There's combat, of a sorts, in Waking Mars. Stuff starts shooting at you and/or exploding and/or trying to eat you fairly early in the game (I think it's fairly early, anyway. I've got about 2 hours sunk in the game, going somewhat slowly, and things started trying to kill me about half way through that.). It's actually closer to what you might get if you mixed a metroidvania with a puzzle game to anything else, I say, but it's got most of what I'd consider requisite. Fairly expansive, open map, exploration, item acquisition based progression (sorta'), largely action based -- and yeah, a bit of combat.

And yeah, dust, la mulana (if you're a masochist, anyway :P), both good. Fortune Summoners is excellent, imo, but it's also closer to something like the old Monster World games (Or perhaps Popful Mail, if you're looking for something a bit more recent) than Castlevania or Metroid. Maybe akin to Demon's Crest. Also decently brutally difficult after a bit.

4.07's up on gamersgate, mate. 4.07b isn't, if that's already out, but 4.07 is. Raggy's pretty neat.

Alternately, if you've got steam, the GG activation code will kick it on for steam. They might already have the latest version.

Way extreme isn't quite the word I'd use. It... kinda' depends on the time perception of folks involved, imo. I know several people, myself included, for whom losing an hour or two (or three, or...) is incredibly easy, and overall a fairly minor thing. Madre saying they'd be at a place at a time and not showing up until 1-2 hours later is... just something that happens occasionally. Same for other family. Not much of a deal for me, personally, but I can chill for several hours staring at a wall without much trouble, so m'probably a bit of an outlier, ha.

Extreme, to me, would be past the six hour mark -- somewhere between three and six, I start getting worried about folks, wondering if something's happened to 'em, but it's not until a good chunk of the day goes by that I'd say things have gone categorically too far (though that depends somewhat on the time of day -- it's much less of a thing to miss time during daylight hours than night, if driving is involved). Sixty minutes isn't that long of a time period, and two of those isn't terribly much longer than that. Easy to slip through that amount of time without much trouble.

... but yeah, when you're transport and you've said you're going to be at a place at a specific time, you do have something of a responsibility to either do so, or contact the transportee(s). Jerk move, C's parent(s).

What are some good metroidvania games on steam? Or where can I get like a big pack of the castlevania games?

I've already got the 2 LoS's on steam, and I've played other castlevania's but  I NEED MORE!
I rather like Valdis Story, m'self. Guacamelee is also quite solid. Definitely a different sort of metroidvania than the castlevania games, though. If you're looking for something that's very different, but still pretty metroidvania-ish, you might check out Waking Mars.

I... huh. Ragha's temples are 800 gold.

... and generate fire gems. That is a helluva thing.

Do find the temperature locked recruitment kinda' annoying, though. I want my ice-critters to be sexy, but still be able to recruit those ridiculous gryphons ;_;

E: Also just noticed their main line PD commander... is their scout. I think someone screwed up, there :P

To be fair to the voters, it probably says more about the quality of his opponents than any particular insanity among the constituency. I applaud his previous fiscal restraint, though. Current campaign could stand to reel in the debt spending, but he's probably doing better than most insofar as that goes. Other politicians should take note.

I have recently discovered that a bit of ground cinnamon stirred into ice cream is absolutely amazing.
