General Discussion / Re: Things that made you sad today thread.

That... would actually be kinda' crappy at comparing people to each other, since the comparison isn't occurring to a baseline. Top 10% could be completely incompetent (everyone else being worse =/= them being good), or be only so marginally better than the top 50% (or everyone, period) that it doesn't make a functional difference in qualification or skill. That sort of comparison is just... not good. At anything except causing a high stress environment (at least until sufficient pressure is brought about by the group that everyone starts underperforming, anyway, which I've seen happen :V).

If the dongtoad is a CIM, then the... fairy? riding the rabbit thing is tiny. If it was human-size, the dongtoad would have been enormous, and therefore hilarious. Boo.
Remember, the dongtoad in question is a Lesser Ribbed Dongtoad. A Greater Ribbed Dongtoad is the size of a small house, and the plain Ribbed Dongtoad is somewhere in between. They get bigger *suggestive eyebrow waggle*

E: To expand on the biology of the dongtoad, the genus (tentatively named phallophibus) is broadly divided into two groups, the non-poisonous phallophibus erectus (which includes our own Ribbed Dongtoad, as well as luminaries such as the smooth, spotted, and phimosal dongtoads, the latter of which is known for its amazing and variegated frills) and the poisonous phallophibus veneralis (which contain species such as the chlamydian and herpian dongtoads, among others -- it's believed that the non-poisonous spotted dongtoads developed their patterns to mimic the coloration common among veneralis dongtoads).

Most individual species come in plain, lesser, and greater varieties, with the occasional toy-sized dongtoad which are colloquially known as dysfunctional dongtoads, though they are perfectly healthy dongtoads well known for their long life in captivity.

Most smaller (normal and down) dongtoads are primarily herbivorous, with the lesser and dysfunctional dongtoads known to supplement their diet with small insects and nectar or honey, while the larger dongtoads are opportunistic carrion eaters, with larger examples of the greater dongtoad variants known for occasionally creating their own carrion to eat.

They're not particularly well adapted, in general, to direct physical violence, but they're notably quick and agile and surprisingly capable at catching moving targets with their teeth. As such, while even the greater dongtoads aren't particularly capable predators, the genus in general isn't a terribly preyed upon one and the smaller varieties are actually quite good for pest control. If it weren't for their relatively lengthy breeding cycle, they would be a noted overpopulation issue.

If I remember things correctly, I'm just going to go ahead and preemptively say "Horsea". Nothing says adventure like a water-based partner that has no legs. Look at it hop around, suffocating and dehydrating, vainly wailing at opponents infinitely more adapted to mobility on land than it :3

Other - Ambivalent. Tell the philanthropist that, so far as you're aware*, the other busker is clean. You've got no reason to lie, but what happens to the other busker is honestly not really any of your business so long as they're not actively interfering with your life (which this fellow isn't. Not like you own the road or whatev'.) and not asking for/accepting help from you.

*Never seen him under the influence, fellow says he stays clean -- takes pride in it, even -- but you've seen plenty of users that act the same way *shrug*

Might as well pick the option that leaves the least amount of people to complain, then. Normally that'd be bombing, but sometimes...

It's notation, about which I care deeply >:(
... isn't that just a fancy word for semantics, though? Just... y'know, for the language folks call math instead of the other ones.

Well, actually looking at it, it's more like semantics for something along the lines of the sub-language (whatever the actual term for that is) that is mathematical shorthand, but eh. Semantic semantics :P

General Discussion / Re: What roguelike game engine to use?

It's... not really all that easy to mod DF, though. Last I checked, anyway. Very easy to add certain sorts of content, but it's easy to do that in Angband or its variants. Doing more than that becomes increasingly difficult, to the point you've now got things like DFHack and Therapist.

Yeah... T-Engine (Gatleos links to it, more or less) might be your best bet for something pre-made, but you're still going to have to pick up a lot of Lua to get anywhere with it, at the absolute least. From what I've seen watching the devs converse and folks coming in for advice, back when I idled around the IRC fairly often, it's comparatively easy to learn and use, and quite flexible, but "comparatively easy" doesn't actually mean "easy". As others have said, you're going to be picking up some degree of coding pretty much regardless.*

*This is actually true with game making period, from everything I've seen. There's incredibly few options available, regardless of genre, that don't involving coding or scripting to some extent, and every single one of those are terribly limited in what they can do.

But is it enough to explain the fear differentials? How come men aren't afraid of women coercing them to have sex?
I'm... kinda' too sleep addled to answer this comprehensively, but as a general heads up, cultural gender norms (at least that I'm familiar with) in regards to expression of fear, especially in any way approaching publicly, are kinda' massively different for men, compared to women. There's also tremendous differences of opinion in regards to promiscuity, admission of rape and/or abuse, acceptance of sexual advances, view of other gender as threat... the list kinda' goes on.

Between it all, you end up with a cultural situation putting a tremendous amount of weight against the concept of a man actually being afraid of a woman in regards to sexual matters. There's either pressure against admitting fear, conditioning to not accept that fear is what is being felt, or strong cultural bias to either not see it as coercion or not see the coercion as undesirable*. Among everything else I'm probably forgetting. The general atmosphere regarding such things is so different between genders (again, at least in the cultural spheres I've had much interaction with) they're basically incomparable. Incredibly different perspectives.

*E: I'm pretty sure I've explicitly heard, in person, one male telling another, "You got laid and you're complaining about it? What the hell is wrong with you?"

Misinterpreted, then. My bad.

Also, by fudging the results, does that mean that some men might not get the help they need if they're in an abusive relationship?

Yes that has happened.

For example it has only been rather recently that we have gotten men's shelters for abusive spouses, not because they didn't exist but because it was hard to convince people that they exist. and I've even heard news of men shelters being shut down because of the viewpoint that men cannot be abused.

You COULD also point to the reasons why men don't report being abused... but that would get complex.
Sweet hell neo, breaking the social perspective that men can't be abused has been one of the notable things feminism has been pushing toward. It's... you're twisting something to be close to the exact opposite of what it is. It's not (to any degree worth mentioning) feminist perspectives that have been putting forth the bullshit that men are not abuse victims. That nonsense is part of the exact gender role malarky the movement in general has been working to tear down. You can pretty much guarantee that without the feminist movement there would be even less support for male abuse victims -- prior to such things the possibility was barely even discussed, much less actual support structure (shelters, etc.) brought into existence.

Battle Encoder Shirase, brother Greatorder. It is friend to all low power CPUs.

@ Meditation, really, the short form is that there's quite a few different kinds. Some are very calm and relaxed. Some are very much not (See: Dervishes, for a physical example, who will meditate by spinning for hours, but extreme concentration is also a part of certain techniques.). Some are completely secular, some are not. It's a very wide body of methodologies and ideologies, somewhat complicated by the fact that many of the techniques (breathing control, ferex) involved have very practical benefits (and thus have been hijacked by stuff like the medical field).

... how'd it go, again? Have two conflicting standards, introduce a third standard, viola, three conflicting standards?

Which is to say, congratulations -- your attempt to avoid confusion has provided another hnnnng to get confused by. Counterproduction achievement get!

...why soup
Because soup is easily portable for carrying to work and less likely to show evidence than spaghetti. As for why not booze, I would hope booze isn't common on site wherever Bauglir's working.

Surely context indicates that the type of groan I'm making is one of exasperation?
That... that's the joke. Intentional misinterpretation, in such a way that could also be part of the expression of exasperation.
