I actually haven't really been specializing at all -- I keep wand, bow, and both sword and axe on me whenever possible, and I melee more than anything. Bow tends to get used for sniping, or for dealing with stuff like the giant spider thing. Do tend to use the leather armor, but that's because melee stuff usually hits hard enough without the metal armor and bows are kinda' anemic without some dex behind 'em. Also tend to get the green skills until I get the fire circle, then sink any remaining into blue. Don't really find the red skills all that sexy, t'be honest.*

Specialization in general just feels kinda' weird with this game, t'me. Each tool has its place... I try to make sure they're roughly equal, but focusing on one just seems... wasteful? Especially if it was melee. Magic I could see, but...

Probably be different with multiplayer, I guess.

And... yeah. Moving really fast makes dealing with a lot of the enemies a lot easier. The larger ones in particular -- you can hop over a charging one or jump between projectiles without near as much trouble (and with much smaller windows of opportunity, so you can do it under platforms and whatnot without trouble) with the supercharged dash. Makes coping with the more mobile enemies much easier, too...

*Incidentally, ideal skillset would be fire circle thingy, that mana regen blue, and blue's magic weapon skill. Zerker rage wouldn't be too bad in place of the magic weapon, but...

*flails* You do! Dash normally. Now imagine going 3-4 times as far, in roughly the same amount of time. Bat hat got serious scoot. Normal dashing is "kinda' meh". Bat dash is "wonderful man on flying trapeze". So mobile, so dodgey ;_;

If normal dash is "dodge by inches", bat dash is "now on other side of room". And so on, so forth. Bat hat best hat.

Re: Hats, I've found going back to non-bat hats after playing with the bat hat for quite a few character is almost... stifling. It adds an absolutely incredible amount of mobility to your character, and makes dealing with a lot of enemies a considerably safer and faster process. Also makes dealing with environmental hazards way, waaaay easier. Like. Environmental stuff isn't very difficult to deal with, without it, but with the hat they become absolutely trivial. Sometimes I've even managed to use them to help me survive -- blocking charging stuff, etc., that a non-bat dash wouldn't have allowed me to dodge (as easily).

It's, just. I've played a couple games with the miner hat, so far, and I'm having trouble seeing how some extra ores are going to be worth chopping my mobility off at the knees. That dash is considerably more than doubled.

E: Though I will take back what I said earlier, about the character being fairly speedy. I'd been playing with the bat-hat enough I had forgotten what it was like without. Without that hat, the character is a slow sack of crap. With it, it's almost like playing an entirely different freaking game.

Maybe I'm being a capitalist pig here but I think using open source software in office is really unprofessional unless said office is the IT.
Unprofessional is wasting money when you could not be. A company probably should have one computer with microsoft office products on it, just to ensure compatibility in the face of MS's horrifically toxic business practices (.docx bullshit, the upcoming compatibility breaking extension change, etc.), but considering how functional LO is these days going with it is the business minded individual's choice.

If there were a notable functionality difference -- and speaking as someone that has been working back and forth pretty intensively with both LO and MS office the last year or so, there isn't -- then there'd be reason to go with MS over open source stuff. As is, the only unprofessional act would be complaining about minor interface differences and the occasional compatibility hiccup in the face of saving the company hundreds -- quite possibly thousands -- of dollars in software costs.

There's plenty of people that hold that something is better (more professional, in this case) just because it's paid for, even if it's functionally identically -- and, in some cases worse -- than something that's free. We call those people goddamn idiots. Professionalism is a methodology, not a price tag, and it's a methodology that, in the business world, strongly includes efficiency in regards to composition. If FOSS can do the job, you use bloody FOSS and stop wasting the company dollar.

... discovered, to my loss, that sufficiently large enemies (like, say, giant yetis) can just walk right over the doggy summon.

Less FML, but said summon can also push you around. And you can hop on top of it and ride it around (which is basically suicide, but hey). Little critter's pretty neat.

Close enough. We could form the Antediluvian Confederacy of Antiquated Avatars and fight the tide of whippersnappers and vibrating midgets.

... really though, that sounds like too much effort. The ACAA shall sleep for another aeon. The stars are not yet right.

I have dreams sometimes of a Zombie Walter Cronkite rising from his grave to drag all employees of CNN, Fox, MSNBC [etc.]...under the age of 40 screaming back into the deep earth with him.

Yes, I know, but then I wouldn't be able to see any of them. I want to see the avatars, I just can't handle the movement. Thank Armok for browser extensions that can disable animated images!
Bit late, but it might be worth noting that Opera (at least the version I'm using) has a simple option to disable animated images. S'in the quick preferences stuff. Images are still there, they just don't move.

... in any case, I've had the same avatar since I joined, I do believe. It doesn't move, and is more static than many of the forum's members, nevermind their avatar. I'll just be over here, not so quietly declaring victory over all of you.

It works on anything non-living. Including items.

Including items that you throw at things*. And stuff other people are wearing. The damage is kinda' pitiful, but detonate is quite possibly the most annoying thing for the player character to run into. Also a good way to cripple equipment-reliant humanoids.

*A use for all those copper (/(not!gold/platinum)) coins? Oh yes.

... note to self. You cannot, in fact, dash underneath the giant yeti's straight forward snowball. Even if you're a bit away and it looks like you can. Even if your sprite doesn't strictly touch it when you're going under. It still hits. Splat.

Pacing... eesh. Pacing in this game seems to be heavily driven by playstyle, especially once you get some hats. The character is actually incredibly mobile, from what I've seen, and can scoot with the best of them (especially with the bat hat) if you're regularly using the dash (especially mid-air). You've definitely got more vertical than horizontal mobility, but you've still got plenty of horizontal mobility available. I've regularly had to kind of consciously slow myself down, because I was going too fast and getting a bit reckless.

Re: monster HP: Most (non-giant) monsters don't take more than four hits if you're keeping up with material (usually very easy, doubly so given higher-tier drops are pretty common) -- many can actually be one or two shot, if you're jonesing well and using your skills (Fire circle doubling arrow damage, magic weapons or 'zerking massively jacking up your melee hits, stuff like that). At least part of this is using the right weapon for the job, though... battle axes are pretty important for dealing with the slower, less mobile/more predictable enemies, ferex, and the magic wands (especially bolt) are ridiculously useful.

Monsters do trend toward relatively static (slimes, mushroom dudes, djinn, etc.) instead of notably horizontally mobile, though. Still, there's usually at least one of a district's critters that's a charger of some sort... probably one of the flying critters. They are a bit slow on average, but that seems to be mostly to keep things sane for the less reflex-capable of players, heh.

The claustrophobic room design is definitely spelunky-ish (especially in those first few levels, iirc.), though the linearity is fairly unique, from what I've seen. Terraria's linearity is more in item progression -- which, admittedly, Magicite currently has as well -- than level design, to the extent anything randomly generated can be specifically designed.

Two 2k score runs in a row, then a half dozen not even making it out of the first district. Yeesh.

I have learned, though. Bows are the best of things. Biggest problem is keeping yourself in arrows*, but... still. So useful >_< Especially once you get that flaming circle thing. One shot all the bees.

*Though bone's not a bad material to use as primary arrow fodder. Lots of junk drop it and it's not really all that useful. Bone arrows do more damage than stone ones, too...

Seriously wish there was a wooden arrow, though.

Not really. You can change up some options to tweak where it stops, though. S'in the limits and warnings stuff, at the bottom. I'd recommend at least stopping at region barriers and intersections. Could turn on stopping at corners to prevent the loops, if you wanted to.
