Ha ha ha. There's no escape from Touhou, D. None. It's everywhere. Might as well just give up and give in, y'know?

Oh... yeah. Especially if you're an alchie that's been diligent about that extracting, heh. As an alch, I'm almost always able to immediately activate the farportal when I hit the fortress, due simply to the pile of useless gems I t.mog on arrival (well, on attunement, anyway). Even with non-alchs, I usually keep all my gems until they can be converted into fortress energy, and then mog 'em all at once, instead of selling them off earlier. Gotta' get that money rollin' in, and it's not like anyone uses very many gems to begin with. Even alchies don't need too many, really.

If you liked Gauntlet, Hammerwatch will probably please your sensibilities. I enjoy it quite a bit, m'self. Solid controls, decent (if someone repetitive) music, sufficiently challenging, overall just fairly fun. Probably especially multiplayer, but single player is fine, too (if notably more difficult).

E: ... probably a bit late now, though. Heh...

I think the general rebuttal (determine its appropriateness or not yourself) is that if you've hit 13, well... you've probably got track by now, or a similar equivalent. T4 moves a lot faster than most roguelikes, but if you're serious about survival you're still going to be doing the "move nowhere without having cast detect monsters" thing, especially in more dangerous areas. Mitigation and avoidance are still very much things you can do, once you're aware of the means of doing so and can start planning around it. Hell, even a sun infusion or illumination source (staff, talent) would have had a good chance of preventing that... mind sear only has a range of 7, lighting the place up from further than that isn't too terribly difficult by that point, and once you see it you can inspect and decide if it's worth the risk.

Though that does sound like you might have gone deeper than you should have. Weakest thing I can think of that might be doing that kind and sort of damage would be a dream horror and if you ran into one of those at 13, well... you were taking risks, and it bit you. Unless you mean the critter was level 13, in which case it does sound like something odd was going on.

... yeah, pretty much. Quite frankly, the stuff they taught me in high school (and, actually, the lower levels of college) re: Evolution were... frankly, basically wrong. And not in the whole "we're simplifying this so young brains can comprehend" sense. More along the lines of "We're still teaching Darwin more or less verbatim." Nevermind the decades upon decades of study since. Which is something that makes it kinda' unsurprising a lot of people get lulled by the idiot talking heads speaking against it. No shit darwin was wrong, you nincompoops. That was centuries ago. We know. We fixed the theory. It's pretty close to dead on now, and getting closer.

I'd probably say poor education on the subject and the young earth nonsense (which forces adherents to mostly discard evolutionary theory, since it doesn't particularly work on that time scale with most species) are the major reasons we've still got so many people that know so very, very little on the subject and reject evolutionary theory on what are more or less false grounds because of it.

Eh, debug mode woulda' gotcha' out! And for cases like that, debug mode and a bug report is the proper reaction, heh.

Book cost stuff
Seems obvious, but... Library?
Well, yes, there is that. And I have, a bit, in the recent years. Only thing is, well... the library is, like, whole minutes driving through traffic away and the computer and fanfiction is riiiight here :P Place I was staying before this it was literally across the street, but I also read everything that (very tiny) library had to offer I was interested in. Year before last. And interlibrary had feeees :x

I have hit up Baen, at least, and occasionally tap Gutenburg (and occasionally other sources unmentionable on the forum), but, well. It's gotten to the point I like fanfiction. As much or more as standard print stuff. So I read a lot of it! It is can be pleasing.

Anyone know if Valdis Story - Abyssal City is any good? It went on sale, and the gameplay looks pretty slick, but I'm not sure if it's worth getting since there aren't any reviews for it yet.
Actually grabbed it after checking the screenies and seeing the reviews. With two hours sunk into it so far, I have to say: What I've seen so far is pretty darn good. Controls are smooth enough, combat is challenging enough and fairly visceral, everything is quite pretty (though pallet swaps come hard and fast, ha. Being fair, behavior and attacks and whatnot change with them, so not as bad as it could be), overall everything so far as been quite satisfying. If you like beat 'em ups and metroidvanias, I'd probably recommend, at least at this point. Especially at <4 bucks USD.

Extra +1, it's also running very smoothly on my laptop, so far, despite being quite graphically active and such. Definite kudos to whoever programmed this thing, insofar as optimization goes.

... just saw the strangest advertisement. Medical one, gave a list of symptoms, y'know, the usual.

The odd part was that it claimed that 250 million Americans are infected. Now, usually that would mean just the USA (which would mean that roughly 80% of the country is infected with... whatever it was.), but even if it included all the Americas, that's still an infection rate a little over 1 in 4.

Ad didn't say what what the disease was, and there was no way in hell I was going to click on a link spouting a factoid like that, but I... I'm kinda' curious what it was, now. Is... is there anything out there that actually has that level of dispersion? Is this like that old factoid that something like 200% (or 120%? Something like that.) of the USA has a mental illness?

Prince of Rosh is a pretty metal name, IMO. Maybe a bit too DotA-y, but why hold that against someone?

... oh gods. Why has no one informed me the butler is a tentacle beast? I've missed out on so much innuendo ;_;

Incidentally, yes, despite having played T4 since single digit betas, that is the first time I've seen the servant's icon. Now excuse me while I ass-ski down a mountain backwaaaards.

Strap a jet engine and a flamethrower to it, laden the remaining surface with spikes, and it'd be pretty extreme. Kinda' useless as a hard drive, but...

Actually IIRC all rares and possibly uniques, are generated as Adventurers.
Nope. What happens is that they can get more than one classes. I think rares and actual adventurers/ziguranthi only get one, but stuff like farportal bosses (orange critters in general) can get more than one. Almost always two, but I think it may be incredibly rarely possible to get three. That's all there is to it. Which classes they end up with is completely random, barring stuff that's been actively disallowed.

As of now, I no longer have a phone =[
... at least in the interim, have you considered online phone software stuff? I think there's a few out there that do phone calls in the states (at least) for nothin'. Looks like google's even in on that...

... depends on what you consider dirt cheap. Not sure I'd trust the penny ones, and frankly anything over around quarter is... too much for my pocketbook, at least at the rate I read. And, y'know, shipping. There's a salvation army within walking distance of here (average paperback cost: $.25. Half off sales: Weekly.). If I've got the spare change and the interest, I hit that up until someone dumps something interesting. Which they do, occasionally. Got like 15 of Jim Butcher's books last year.

But! Free (barring 'net charges, but I'm not paying that and would need it for other things anyway, so...) is still considerably less than a quarter. Saved at least eighteen bucks (72*.25. Probably more, since there's about twice that I didn't finish) last year at a book/quarter rate, which is like... one to two weeks worth of food. It adds up, y'know?
