General Discussion / Re: Things that made you go "WTF?" today o_O

There... a lot of the pokemon crossover fanfiction that's breached 60k words, over on FF.N. They're Total Drama crossovers.

I... I don't know why. It confuses me. Each and every summary for 'em is cringe worthy, too ;_;

Just set their shirt on fire and give 'em a good kick. No need to get fancy.

Your double negatives aren't not in another castle.
This feels better, to me.

Surprised you guys use anything. I thought russians thrived on a diet of snow, ice and vodka?
No, no, snow, ice, and vodka is how you breed Russians. Once they've finished coagulating they need food and suchlike just like any other human-like entity and they stop being able to consume meaningful amounts of snow and ice. Still have to maintain a certain ratio of their body volume as vodka, though. I think the last study said it was some sort of alcohol based natural anti-freeze system? Biology goes strange places.

Ah. Yeah, well... you've still got that. S'a fairly common exploitative MMO scheme even*, but there's definitely a few MUDs and whatnot that go that way, too, and other things that aren't trying to turn it into a cash grab. I've tried a couple over the years, though it's been like two or three years since I touched one so I've forgotten bloody everything in regards to names and such. Still, yeah. It's a thing!

But definitely low depth stuff has item collection as the major or only progression method... that's basically what you have in crap like Halo. Most FPSes, even, even though the progression depth is very shallow. Plenty of party games (arguably stuff like Smash Brothers, just as another example) have what in-match progression they have tied into item collection.

*It's often tied in with an XP thing, too, but I've zero doubt there's strict item progression systems out there. Probably monetized out the wazoo.

I wonder if there are any games where there is no leveling and equipment is the only measure of progress? That could be interesting.
... yeah, there's kinda' plenty. I mean, freaking Zelda, man, especially if you consider hearts just a passive item. But that's just a representative example. You see it in a lot of places, especially places that aren't claiming to be RPGs. It's in roguelikes, it's in platformers, it's probably in flippin' point-and-click adventure games. S'everywhere. Item based progression is one of the basic progression schemes in the gaming world, especially among simpler mechanics systems.

Other Games / Re: Starbound - We have lift off.

Completely divorced from Starbound, but I sincerely hope someone got fired for that, MZ. That's, just... well. It's certainly not to the consumer's benefit, that's for sure, and probably explains why it's been such a pain in the rear to find drivers and system specs and whatnot in the past. Wish I knew whether it'd be safe to stick another harddrive in the thing... it's got space for it, but no clue about power, whatever software/hardware settings would need to be mucked with, so on, so forth. And I haven't been able to find out. Apparently because there's a dozen of the bloody things on the market, and gods only know what manuals apply to which. Thinking on it, something like this is probably why the monitor replacement I tried to do for the last HP laptop didn't work out...

I do vaguely remember it having some sort of specific code or... something... but I think there was like two or three different versions of that, too. Massively stupid thing to do. Had to have made administration and logistics considerably more troublesome than it should have been :-\

Regardless, to the original point, while it's the strongest computer I've ever had access to, it's still pretty damn weak in the overall scheme of things. Starbound's not exactly the heaviest program I've tried to run, not by a long shot.

I'm running on a 2.1(ish) ghz dual core, 4(ish) gigs ram, 256 meg integrated video card... I think. The video card might be a 1 gig one. Not a gaming optimized one regardless. HP Pavilion dv7 Notebook PC, but there's apparently like three bloody versions of the dv7 or some rampant nonsense so gods only know what the actual hardware is.

Starbound's been running fine even when there's less than two gigs of RAM free, though. Mostly maxes out the CPU but it runs fairly smoothly.

S'a lot more focused than the W (so less push, when you don't want to), and attacking gives you something to do while you're waiting to slam another cleaver into someone's face, when chasing them around to let the W drain health isn't really a good idea. Lets you drop turrets faster, as well. Also costs less health per damage if you can manage a two or more hits, generally (and loads that damage on faster than the spinnies, if you're hitting), which shouldn't be too hard if you're landing your cleavers. W's just a lot less... controlled, all around. And slower in terms of single target damage, and often more expensive per point of damage. AD steroid also helps diversify the damage a bit. Autos being Mundo's only source of physical damage, it's nice to have a boost on tap.

Please don't insult decent, upstanding hives of scum and villainy with such a comparison, Leo. Youtube comments are a particular class of filth all their own.

... were the flames buffed or something while I wasn't paying attention? Mundo's always been fun because of those glorious cleavers mixed with that stealthily vicious AD buff and the ability to go where he pleases that wonderful sustain ult. The spinnies were more for the tenacity than anything else... kinda' his worst skill, imo. Still fairly alright, but...

Well, that's... somewhat enraging. Day or two ago, question proposed: Do I mind someone staying over for a few days, which is like, yeah, sure. Bit over the weekend, maybe a bit into the week. No prob, I really don't mind helping out. Cut to about 36 hours later, I find out from a third party the negotiated "few days" is more like two+ fucking weeks.

I'm... not in a very happy place, right now. People don't have to do this underhanded bullshit to get me to agree to things. I just need a little forthrightedness and warning. I honestly wouldn't have minded a half month stayover if someone would have goddamn told me it was a half month stayover when I was initially asked. Didn't get any of it, and now I'm going to be saddled with two weeks and change of goddamn air conditioning and TV, when I seriously have no need for either and a fair amount of need to be away from both.

Just... not righteous. Can't really do much about it, 'cause the person that shafted me in the first place is the owner of the place I'm staying in, but that doesn't stop me from being kinda' pissed off.

And I probably have to figure out what to do about, like, food and suchlike. Basic amenities. Because the house in question has not been set up for someone else living there for any notable amount of time. Just... ugh. Damnit people. All I ask is warning. A little freaking prep time. That's just about all I've ever fucking asked for, at any point. Just give me a day. Two days, preferably. Instead, no days, and the person's already been dropped off at the house, without anyone telling me that was going to goddamn be done and just. Just. I seriously do not like people being in my house without, like, me being there. Especially if they're there before I can fix things up. There's something incredibly irritating about a guest coming into one's home without being there to personally greet them and offer entry. S'just... that's not how you do things. Not right. Not proper.

Other Games / Re: Ocarina or Majora?

... honestly, Tim, it being a long game despite it just makes things worse. I don't like the pressure a time limit imposes, even if it can be lifted or manipulated easily. It's a major negative for me, and I have and will in the future put games down because of it. Occasionally I can play despite it or through it (I've beat dungeon crawl a couple times, ferex, and that goddamn food clock is basically the same issue), but I have to be in the right sort of mood and I've never lucked onto being able to play MM when I was in that sort of mood.

Really, if it auto-reset at the end of the third day instead of game overing that would be considerably more bearable, but even then just the time limit being there is... annoying. Annoying enough it's kept me from playing the game. I honestly hate being on the clock, especially in my leisure activities. Certain genres are more forgivable for that sort of thing, but something like a mainline LoZ game... not so much.

... all I can really say is I have a near violent hatred of time limits, especially larger, more overarching ones. I never managed to play Majora's Mask long enough to see how it handled... anything. My brain saw the two days or whatever it was and said, "Screw this, I'm out." And I stopped playing. This has happened all three or four times I tried MM :-\

Played through OoT, though. It was alright, especially for its time and console. Just... decently done, particularly in comparison to similar offerings during its release. Solid, as that sort of game goes.

Is that actually showing up as $3? Over on this side of the pond it is showing up as £4.99 which would put it at aprox $8.
7.49 USD, on my end.
