General Discussion / Re: Transhumanism Discussion Thread

A transhumanism thread? I'm camping here.
You shouldn't be so cheery about it. This is step one to becoming a Mythos-tier species.
Said like we aren't already one to every other living thing we've encountered.

I will take the first experimental laser/cyber arm implants, risks and all.

Because robot limbs.
Didn't they get a (somewhat?) working brain/prosthesis interface just in the past few years? Fairly sure I remember hearing about that, at the very least for legs. Point being we've (probably, if my memory hasn't spazzed out again) got robot limbs. Right here. Right now.

They're just kinda' ridiculously expensive, in a general sense, and I don't think they're very fancy yet. Probably limited to people that have lost limbs involuntarily, too.

On the other hand, most people don't suspect the Department of agriculture of shady business.
"Most" would be pretty accurate, sure. There's some pretty scuzzy shit going on with agriculture in the states, though. Fairly serious corruption in a number of areas, lots of nasty crap.

S'a bit of a shame that even when stuff actually ends up public/visibly breaking it doesn't stay in the public mind for very long. More people aware of it might actually bring some positive change about :-\

Maybe it's part of the whole food-disconnect thing (not really knowing how/where/etc. your food comes from/about) that happens nowadays? You'd think people would be more concerned about the most vital of logistics but...

Not to say I'm much better, of course, ha. Even among those somewhat concerned it just doesn't seem to be a priority. Which is... odd, thinking on it.

Some do. We let their stench warn us of their character.

Eh, it'll probably shift over to other low income/few-to-no possibilities groups in due time. S'definitely the main reason I've seen that rural kids enlist (and yeah, I'm a rural kid, that's gone to by-and-large rural schools, so I've kinda' been surrounded by them), after all*. Money and training (paid for school, etc.). Not sure why the rest of the country's poor hasn't cottoned on to the moneybag, but I can only imagine it'll happen sooner or later, especially if recruitment efforts start preying focusing on 'em.

*I mean, the patriotism or whatever is there, I guess, but it's definitely not been what I've heard as reason #1.

Sky took it 0-2. Amusing bit -- win conditions were (almost) exactly the same as vs. Char, heh. 2-1 deaths in the first match, CS victory in the second.

... part of me almost feels bad for Cthulhu. This is looking like a trend :P

... huh. Folks are actually considering standard lane meta (I think?) for 1v1s? Most of the reasoning behind it isn't there if you're sans team and (I guess?) sans objectives, right? I mean, I'm not considering anything, but...

Only reason I didn't just flat random for the matches I had 'gainst charmander is that I'm even more terrible with half the champs I've got access to than a particular few of them :P

M'not even trying to guess at champion choice, m'self. My ban picks vs char was "Press random three times. Those ones."

Dat last max range laser >_<

Poor Vlad, heh.

E: And then poor Vlad again. Brodingerfist!

Probably! Woke up around 11 am GMT -6, don't expect to take a nap before... whenever. Should be good for a stomping :P

Odd... it does look like Spring isn't on the list. It should be noted to anyone browsing that Zero-K is a Spring engine game, one of quite a few, and fairly derivative (albeit not in a bad way) of the Total Annihilation style many of them follow. Worth checking out, but it's less a stand-alone thing than it is a mod for a larger piece of software.

[snip]I don't think for a second that gun control activists don't want nationwide gun bans, they just know they'll lose if they pursue them.
Just... I don't think you actually know what the majority body of gun control advocates in the states want, then. There's a reason MSH used the word "significant". Most -- a massive, tremendous margin -- of the ones I've met and talked to (definitely including myself) don't want gun bans. As a rule, even people that want stronger -- sometimes much stronger -- regulations are fine with gun ownership as a general thing. We just want better controls on who gets them, probably where and how they use them, and maybe a reduction in overall gun circulation if we're really lucky*. The most I've seen for legitimate consideration of a gun ban has been re: handguns, generally leaving most other sorts untouched. The assault weapon ban bullshit is generally just that; even fairly staunch supporters of regulation are aware of how damned little it'd actually do.

*Because that'd go a hell of a long way in cutting down criminal ownership, to say nothing of undercutting some of the out-of-country gun running that's going on. I totes bet you Mexico and central/south america in general would really love if we got some of that shit under control.

No history record of mental illness*, no felonies (misdemeanors are fine, though, iirc.), should a background check be done. Is generally what I've seen, I think, for general firearm stuff. Was what was on the papers to be sent in for the concealed carry background check, anyway, which is currently as far back as I can remember.

Mind you -- there's nothing else. They don't, like, check for mental illness (just record thereof), or any warning signs or whathaveyou. Just any administrative records. Crazy as a goddamn bedbug and yelling at the moon every monday night, having years of struggle with not-officially-diagnosed PTSD or whatever... eh. Not on the books, have your hundred yard death dealer.

Incidentally, I've known more than a few people that have avoided mental health assistance for basically that exact reason, keeping an official record of it from existing. Not necessarily for the purpose of gun ownership, but yeah.

*Though this isn't absolute, I don't believe. Either that or their records aren't very good and one of the people I know, who's had a long and storied history of prescribed psychoactives for various reasons, lied on their concealed carry papers. Also possible!

Very few people do this in the gun community I believe based on what I've heard. They know it's a real minefield and regularly complain about having to go through various painstaking processes whenever they change states.
No clue about between states (though, iirc, a fair number of them have agreements between each other in regards to travel and gun transport*, at the very least), but I've definitely known people that have traveled a bit inside one to go where it's easier to get certified/buy weapons. Just as an anecdotal example, the concealed carry program in the area I went through it was a fucking joke, and if my memory hasn't completely failed me there were a couple of people (out of maybe a group of 12-15) from fairly far afield (though, being fair, the area's pretty sparse so getting folks from 50-60 miles/several counties over away isn't exactly a surprise. Still.) who showed up for it.

*It's a minefield, but from what I recall it's not a very confusing one, and where and how to step is pretty clear, in most cases.

... mog has a good point. I'd refrain unless I was aware of the local commerce laws regarding the substance. Then...

... then it would probably depend on if I currently had enough of an income to have to file taxes, because I honestly would rather not have that sort of transaction on the record, y'know?

Otherwise, as others said. Squick aside, a hundred bucks is food for the better part of a month, if not more. An unfortunate but easy decision.
