... completely ignoring all the animes that do just that, and do just fine, of course. And all the movies (and TV series, of course) that have been made from books with notably long time frames and radically varying types of pacing. And a great host of etcs., and so forths, and so ons.
As for storyline stuff, well, games with sequels tend to handle that just fine. It's called 'canon', heh. An intended path through the available choices. There's nothing inherently cheapening about doing that, and can make for great storytelling. Different from an interactive media, but still great. Hell, to an extent, you see it with a number of Let's Plays -- ways to take the viewer out of the player seat and still make for a grand ride.
Really, the reason that I've seen that more video games haven't been converted into movie format -- or at least spun off a movie or two, or TV series, or whatever -- is just because no one's got off their arse and done it, for whatever reason. I've never entirely figured out why (or particularly bothered to try to, really), other than the copyright holders never quite cottoning on to the right sort of person to hire to manage the conversion and do so profitably/effectively.
It'll probably happen eventually, though. Another couple generations of people growing up online and exposure to all the sorts of media intermingling that leads to and we'll likely have a nice body of folks proven capable of pulling such conversions off, and then it'll just be a matter of funding and interest.
