General Discussion / Re: Things that made you go "WTF?" today o_O

... you don't notice them either, huh? I do sometimes pay attention when it's a vehicle I recognize, but generally you could replace the drivers with computers and I wouldn't notice at all. Far as I'm concerned every other vehicle on the road might as well be possessed or a zombie or somethin'. Wouldn't make a difference to my perception, most of the time. Too busy watching the vehicles themselves to watch the people in them.

... it got shitkicked by an octopus. An octopus. I have seen dishrags more threatening than your average octopi, and these things can be trumped by them. Weak!

More seriously, physics, buoyancy, etc., etc. It's pretty unlikely you'd get something like that that reaches any notable size on land, iirc. The sea is full of terrifying horrors, sure, but that's been a known thing like forever. What's one more? Plus these things are apparently kinda' tiny, at least the part that sticks out. Like one of those magician's sleeve tricks if you tried to pull it up, though. Which would be kinda' amusing.

Also perhaps more terrifying. Imagine a clown did a magic trick, only instead of pulling diaphanous silk out of its sleeves, that thing came out. Picture that, and despair.

How do I make the link say what text I want? I used hyperlink but is there something else I should be using?

Format is
Code: [Select]
[url=<insert web address here>]Insert text here[/url] If you want to have just the link, you do this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Example, which in code looks like this
Code: [Select]
[url]http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Example[/url]
Your original was this:
Code: [Select]
[url=http://]http://pastebin.com/uJBMaWkR[/url] which made http:// the address (which is to say, it went nowhere) and http://pastebin.com/uJBMaWkR the text. If you want just the address, don't put an = sign (or anything else) in between url and the ].

Or technically you could go http://pastebin.com/uJBMaWkR
Code: [Select]
[url=http://pastebin.com/uJBMaWkR]http://pastebin.com/uJBMaWkR[/url] ... but that's a little redundant :P

Think you can just type out http://pastebin.com/uJBMaWkR, too. Which... yeah, you can. Apparently no need for url tag unless you're being fancy. Many options! Pick one you find most amusing.

I don't seem to be awake when everyone else is playing.
What time zone are you?

Also, as long as I don't suddenly have a router overheating again today, I could continue/start something around 8PM est.
If yeh do, could probably spare a couple hours, maybe two and a half. 'Till 'round 10, 10:30 your time.

You wanted this, actually.
More along the lines of that.

An amazing display of its belief in your ineptitude.

A landmark occasion! Huzzah! It thinks you can't hunt.

You must prove it wrong. Go out, take down a deer with your teeth and hands, and then drop the carcass on the cat. Human superiority must be displayed, once again. This may or may not be a joke!

Pastebin. There's probably better sites for it out there, by this point, but it's still pretty solid. Basically just a place to offload text to something online. Good thing to consider (and use instead, seriously) when you're intending to offload several hundred thousand words of text onto a forum.

Pastebinning that or something would probably be a lot kinder to the forum.

To be honest I doubt the sexual compatibility between totally alien species is going to be very high anyway.  They could mate via lovedarts, or not at all.
Humankind would find a way, leaf. You know how our species is when it comes to that kind of thing. We're kinda' like dragons, except we can't actually interbreed with other species. Or objects.

I suppose a good question would be defining the allure. It is the forbiddenness, the strangeness, the wildness, etc.
Is it?

There's a big difference between wanting to bang an anime cat [with drawn human features, and human hair] and a real horse. I havne't found many furries who profess to like both, is my point. Dunno. Maybe a fantasy since they cannot take the step to real beastiality? Which is fine in my book.
Ah, edits came after I posted. Yeah, there's definitely distinct groups in there, between those actually interested in animals qua animals and those strictly into anthro/anthropo -morphic stuff, without too terribly much overlap (at least from what I've seen). Not to say no overlap, just... not much.

Not just would, but did. You really think totemic or animistic worship in ye' olden days were horribly distanced from this sort of stuff? You damn sure better believe there was probably folks that wanted to go down on Anubis or whatev'.

The discussion itself was probably less likely to occur, though, yeah.

Only if you have a problem with what's probably a cat dude in a dress :P

E: Well, unless it's an apparent age thing. That could be an issue, too. I barely even notice half the time anymore :-\

None of those were 'uncanny valley' for me.

I don't think I have an uncanny valley, because things most people consider uncanny valley territory are perfectly fine for me.
Pretty much this. Only things that really seem to consistently squick me is guro (and associated subgenres) and most illustrated yaoi (and... honestly, the squick on that latter has lessened over the years. I've always been down with it, s'just not particularly to my tastes, and my tastes seem to becoming somewhat more inured as time goes by.). I kinda' consider myself strongly omnivorous, so to speak, in relation to that sort of stuff (both fetishized and not), at this point. It's not so much I'd call myself furry as I kinda' like everything. With the post soli threw up while I was writing this, I'd be giving thumbs up to both sets, as well as stuff that was completely non-fuzzy (as in human, not, say, naked mole rats or something.). Why limit oneself to particular sets of sexy or awesome if you could be enjoying all of them instead?

With the costumes, though, the latter two just... not sure, didn't do much for me? One of those, "Iffin' dat's yer kink, go for it." things, I guess? Now, one of the other things I've seen on that end of the extreme involve very impressive body paint and varying accessories and... that gets kinda' nice. Problem for me with the fursuits is less the sentiment or the style itself and more how they fit, really. Gimme' skin tight or body mods (though we haven't really reached that point in terms of technology, yet.) and we're talkin'.

Hey, if folks want to give it a go, I'm up for it. The CPU immolation doesn't really bother me, but if it bothers other folks and there's a workaround, I'd be more than happy to see if it works out. E: Actually, it recommends low or ultra-low caps for games with a buncha' players in them. Hrm.

Also got back home much earlier than expected, so I might be able to join in on Hal's game.

... yeah, because humans aren't animals at all. Except wait...

Acknowledgement of fact isn't debasement, silly. The actual question you're looking for is why people would identify with other animals, and the answer there generally boils down to varying positive aspects the other animals have (or the individual in question invents for them) and self-identifying with those, with a possible side of overexaggerating (or simply disliking to a large extent) the negative aspects* of their natural sort of animal.

*Like that good ol' anthrocentric arrogance, ferex :P Our sort of monkey is better than your sort of monkey! Which, hey, I'd probably agree, homo sapiens is pretty awesome. But we're still just jumped up primates at the most, not some kind of strange other-thing.
