General Discussion / Re: Calm and Cool Progressive Discussion Thread

The rich/businesses as job makers? Dunno if that was this thread or another one but it came up. And yeah, th'concept is so backassward it's almost surprising it gained traction. Consumers (/demand) are what causes an increase in employment, and despite having an overwhelming amount of the resources th'high wealth folks don't increase demand nearly proportionally to what they take in/hoard (surprise surprise, money stagnating in a bank or tied up in land is bad for the economy!). Regarding businesses, they only hire more folks if they've got more business than they can handle, not just 'cause they're making more money.

Was a canceled TED talk that put the concept more elegantly. Though that's definitely not something that came up in the last week and a half. Might be a bit iffy on the exact opposite bit, too.

There now exists clean sponges in this house, once again.

Now to hide them from everyone except me. Why in the name of Zeus simple things like washing off the sponge or not letting it sit in dirty wash water for days seems impossible for the other people I've lived with over the years I don't know. Little bit of cleaning and effort and sponge will be in good shape for dish washing for five, six months. These people ruin them in a couple weeks.

But now I have new sponges, and by the gods no one else is getting them. My sponges, damn you all!

Also garbage cans. Those are going to help. And hair ties! No more rubber bands. Rubber bands work very well for keeping hair up but hurt like hell to get off. Point being few necessities/life easements acquired and now happier than yesterday.

Find an excuse to kick it back a decade and you'd have a built in title. Nuclear Disco Inferno.

Got some good tricks, though, and it's solid up until your plain shot starts shooting faster. Neatest thing I've noticed about it is that it apparently has some drop. Get a bit back and fire at a tall critter on a ledge below you and some of the shots might hit small critters you normally couldn't land a hit on. Helps a bit with clearing off those impacted ledges, heh. You can also jump while it's going off, which took me a while to notice.

The ToS novels (or novellas? Pretty short, really.) I've read have been pretty alright. Not mind-blowing or whatever, but alright. Read maybe seven or eight so far, they show up on the cheap in thrift shops pretty often, apparently. Plus I pulled four or five out of someone's old junk they were ditching.

Wouldn't pay standard market value for a book nowadays, but a quarter? Sure. They're worth a quarter. Least the ones I've hit so far. Maybe even a solid buck. Probably not a buck fiddy, but maybe.

Eh. Cannibalism is passe in the face of a reverse Zeus story. Go North Korean military go, seduce that god-figure! His essence is divine, so it's going to take like fifty of you! Make sure to turn into geese or something.

Heh. You're looking at "colony" a little to literally, Sheb. The US is definitely reaping some hella' spoils with its imperialism, it's just not quite as up front as direct colonial taxation or whatever. More of a bending folks over the knee so the corps can violently probe the orifices thing.

I can certainly see the navy taking some downsizing. Not much, of course, because it's a lot easier to move a tank by sea rather than air. However, trying to mothball current carrier groups seems a pretty tenuous solution to me. Better to just carefully phase out one or two of them
Maybe just sell or not build a few of the new planes. Quick eyeball said that about three F-35s (and we're apparently planning on buying quite the crapload) would have covered the entire tuition cost last year (if they didn't include an engine or, apparently weapons. Full loadout, three would have paid the tuition aid something like three times over.).

S'actually one of the comparisons/complaints I've heard pretty often. Carriers are one thing, but planes are considerably another and somewhere we can probably skim some fat from pretty easily. Wiki thinks they're planning on cutting a bit in that area, but... maybe cut a little harder. Unless we're doing some particularly nasty shit behind the scenes (beyond what we actually are, I guess), I don't think there's much in the world with a notable airforce that's actually hostile to us or would be any time this... ever.

E: I'm not sure what it says when cutting tuition on ~200k soldiers is preferred to cutting out three or four machines, really. Seems backwards, even if it's ostensibly faster.

No soul? Of course us redheads have souls, you get one freckle for every one you take!
... does placement of the freckle denote anything regarding the nature of the stolen soul?

Also, like. Non red heads. Freckles just a generic soul-stealing manifestation, or is it specific to redheads?

Chess is good though. Strong approval of chess.
Chess is one of the most violent games in existence and a known tool for some of the most dangerous people our world has ever seen >_>

... though I don't disagree. Chess is pretty alright.

Though I just realized, having recalled skimming over that page a few hours ago, that they promote snakes and ladders in the same body of text they condemn anything including snakes as tools of the devil. Neat.

... because it's an easy (if often false) identifier of an out-group, same with most other outward expressions of "otherness", if you will. People still get shitkicked for long hair and crap, simply because it lets some fucktards wrapped up in tribal stupidity identify a target. It's not really that difficult to understand. Our species is pretty naturally xenophobic and establishing dominance over or striking against an out-group is a far from uncommon (if crude) means of reaffirming in-group status. Etc., so forth, so on. As blarg says, hair color in that case is just an excuse, not really a reason.

Random question for the more familiar with the varying series.

Borg tribbles. Is that actually a thing?

Hey, people "hate drunk drivers" and vote for politicians who are "tough on crime...." :(
... not full correlation there. I do hate drunk drivers with a bit of a passion -- I see the act as roughly equivalent to attempting murder, and the general thought of it just fucking enrages me to a point somewhere beyond coherent thought.

But rehabilitation or prevention is always the goal, not... something else. And taking the license away and/or impounding the vehicle is a lot better way to prevent the act than throwing folks in jail, I'd think. Subject in particular is one I'm probably only quasi-rational about.

Don't have a problem with drug use and prison time isn't the way to help with it, but when you get behind the wheel of a car while under the influence that's... going a bit further and putting a lot of peoples' lives in danger. S'real damn hard to react reasonable to someone doing something close to an equivalent of firing blindly into a crowd, y'know?

Probably more along the lines of "looking to make trumped up reasons to fire people so you don't have to pay unemployment" or something along those terms. Pretty much everything SG's mentioned is pointing to them intentionally making the bar impossible to reach so they have legally justifiable reasons to fire people. Assuming they even need one in his state, dunno.

Basically, they're not going to revet the process. The process is doing exactly what they intend it to do.

I second the motion of arming the Space Needle with a phaser beam array to shoot down any missiles that attempt to approach Washington state.
... and now all my mind can see is the outer facade of the Space Needle falling away to reveal an oversized NOD Obelisk of Light.
