I'm now somewhat curious how many people in western countries are named Jihad. Besides that kid, apparently. It. Doesn't strike me as the most common of names.

Wait, who has the states been considering nuking lately? I vaguely recall some stuff about tac nukes vs. Iran, but if there's be anything more lately it's news t'me.

... or at least who is N.Korea saying the states are considering nuking, I guess.

'Cause I mean, damn, if we're about to ignite a nuclear war some forewarning would be nice. They ain't been sayin' much 'bout it.

Heh. Just make sure it's actually a headache. I had a kidney stone start off like that.

... though if it's actually that, you'd probably notice real quick when the pain becomes sufficient you start expelling things from all orifices. That was not a happy day. Not at all.

The odds don't matter, it's immoral to plead guilty to a crime you didn't commit. If people didn't do that this wouldn't even be an issue.
Morality bends really damn quick when you're looking at cutting your time in prison to a third :-\

Less time you're in there the less likely your orifices get plundered or limbs mangled. Considering the shithole that is the American prison system, I'm not sure if reducing your time in it by as much as possible could really be considered immoral. Definitely not moral, but survival tends to trump principles in that sort of situation, and reasonably so. Amorality is a thing, and considering the risks and costs involved in prison time, it's definitely what's going on here. Personally, morality can go blow itself if it means staying out of the rape box.

Pleading guilty for a guarantee of a misdemeanor instead of a possibility of a felony would probably fall into a similar category of action considering how badly being a released felon screws you over in the states.

Now, if the states prison system wasn't basically a rolling human rights violation and there was some way to get out of second class citizen status after getting out of prison, then... yeah, there wouldn't be "an excuse not to try". But with things as they are, you do whatever you damn well can to either reduce the odds of going to prison or reduce the length you're in there. And, as True notes, going before the jury can easily increase those odds, sometimes drastically. You really can't expect people to reasonably act otherwise, unfortunately. Now, improve the situation behind bars and post time... maybe. Definitely more traction for condemnation. But not before that happens, yeah.

... considering the last post was nearly a week ago, I think it stopped being an issue.

... I'm fairly sure I was eating those before you were born, FFS. Not your signature breakfast food. Not mine either, but I refuse to stand idle as false credit is claimed. Also been recommending them for a while, because waffle makes the best bread. Pancake's not bad either.

You could rile me up a lil'wit Heimerdinger. The game still lacks in sufficient heimerdinging. Dude's got like the best name, an old-school porn fro, and no love whatsoever. That needs to change.

Nooot necessarily true. I read quite a bit of fanfiction from series I'm not particularly familiar with (if at all), and I'm pretty far from the only one. Good readin's good readin' regardless of the source, and a non-trivial amount of the better fanfiction is written so familiarity with the original source isn't required. Enhances the experience, probably, but not a necessary condition for enjoyment.

There's also th'flat fact that it's possible to publish things as fanfiction or original fiction of a similar nature (Naturally not along the lines of what Pnx was talking about, but still :P) that will never, ever manage to get published otherwise. "Readers of fanfiction" is a much larger set of people than "no one at all", and it's often more likely to draw people in than something standalone since you've got a built in hook and audience that original fiction lacks. Basically "original work's fans" is pretty darn likely in a lot of cases to be a much, much larger population than whatever you could drum up on your own. There's a lot of really darn good published fiction that basically no one hears about, after all.

Deep fried cakes are a pretty common thing, actually.
French toast isn't deep fried, though. At least that's not how we do it.
Dunno 'bout deep, but fried I've certainly seen. Bring out dat skillet! We got some chicken menses to gattai with bread. Might as well fry it!

E: Wikipedia says they definitely deep fry it in, at the least, Hong Kong. And that it is one of the top 50 more delicious known foods.

It's not exactly the energy used though. We don't have 100% transformation to electricity.
... wasn't talking about anything particularly serious, PH. Just meant PTTG should totes come into the room with that graph. Stack of paper as tall as PTTG is would seriously liven up the discussion.

Capstone the event by kicking the tower of paper into the front row of the audience. If this is to be art, not science, it needs a raised platform to perform appropriately.

As for solar, from what I recall one of the major design methods is, like. Nothing. It's just a frak-off huge mirror out in a clear area pointed at something you want to heat up. Relatively cheap, clean, not heavy on the rare metals or whatev'. Biggest problem would be transportation of the generated energy, but that's an issue with everything and not particularly unique to solar. That and getting people off their arse to go build it. There's someone else on the forum that's got a better handle on that stuff... I want to say Nadaka, but my memory's as spotty as ever. There's older posts laying around in one of the threads. Maybe in a couple.

There is an XKCD for everything.
Even that whole energy density thing. Which, if you've got the paper and ink to do, PTTG, you should totally do.

You learn eventually how to avoid the crap.
There's also forums and stuff where people congregate and provide suggestions regarding the good stuff. Plus most aggregate sites tend to have favorites and stuff. Once you find one author or reader (there's often fic-less profiles that just contain a honking huge favorite list) that coincides with your tastes, you can often ride the wave of favorites for dozens of decent-to-good fics. Basically other people filter out the crap for you, to a large extent :P

But yeah, while I was cooking I figured out a much easier way to explain the phenomena. Goes like this:

You know what's great? "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" is great. You know what would be awesome? "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" done on flamenco guitar*. And, you know what? I can do that. I can do that, and then I can share it, and I increase the awesome of the world.

That, right there, is one of the major driving forces behind fanfiction. I mean. You can create something original and make an awesome thing, too, definitely. But in the end, it's still +1 awesome and that is a wonderful and oft-times fulfilling thing. Is the person who makes a good thing great really all that less of a thing than the person who simple makes a great thing? Maybe a bit less, sure. But they both make great things.

*I know this because I've heard "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" done on flamenco guitar, and it is awesome. E: Tangentially, Mozart on snare drum is pretty ballin'.
