I'm old, and I do not know who Tina Turner is?

Does she have something to do with the broadcasting network?
Some singer at some point. And I guess some other stuff? Wikipedia knows more.

And ah, I actually know of Papillon. Sorta'. Heard it mentioned a few times over the years. Just never read it.

* scriver mutters something about uncultured youth...
* Frumple mutters something in return about cultured whippersnappers...

Do still consider myself young, but GG's comment made me recall Tina Turner's Private Dancer so I'm not sure I count as youth anymore.

... though that song is a little older than me. Barely :-\

Harvester butterflies are carnivorous, aren't they?
Also, their caterpillars devour their prey and then tie the corpse skins to their body for hunting purposes.
Wikipedia thinks so! Also neat, and still not as assholeish as wasps. Butterflies remain awesome.

Butterfly motif is a'ight. Had a dream once where swarms of butterflies ran around stripping people to the bone and then devouring the bones. It was colorful and awesome.

... okay, so maybe flesh devouring butterfly isn't the best thing to mark your feet with, but... whatever. Butterflies are neat.

Nevermind also that the information collected by these devices is public record, and can be legally viewed by anyone.
Oh... hey. That's. Just great. Guess what I should do is go around town writing down license plate numbers, then keep an eye on those records until the plate shows up in another state. Depending on if it's an automated process or not, might even be able to set up a bot program to do the work for me. Just have 'em track the system for a month or so and then notify me which ones are few hundred miles out of place. Would make casing a joint really easy! Could probably find out where people I want to stalk/steal from/violently-murder-for-no-reason/inundate-with-in-person-advertising/whatever live and work the same way.

Collecting the information like that is bad enough, but making it public record is just massively goddamn stupid. What jack-idiot thought that was a good idea?

Oh hell, seriously? Are you sure you're a cop, dude? Aren't you aware of the amount of generally-much-worse crime something like this could enable?

No offense dude. But like every post I've seen from you makes you just seem terrified of everything. Seriously dude.
Worried and a lil'hyperbolic, yeah, and no offense taken. S'a bit apt, though there's really a pretty specific (couple of) spectrum(s) of stuff that I get like that with. Going around relatively unprotected in relation to the environmental issues in my area just happens to be one of them :P Rather take a few precautions and be able to ignore a lot of problems than have to be even more hyperattentive to avoid stuff (and still occasionally bugger up and end up with poison ivy rashes again or somethin'.).

And yeah, I know it's pretty viable and untroubled in a lot of areas, and you probably can get by barefoot in my area, I just... wouldn't want to. Especially if you like meandering about the more interesting places, which usually involve things that probably want to eat (parts of) you. Even being pretty careful with shoes I still end up picking things out of the soles/out of the feet fairly often due to stuff that's just basically invisible. Long-ish grass plus the drunk/idiot issue and various wildlife. And... avoiding the long-ish grass isn't really possible in a lot of places, heh, short of not going there at all.

What if you never wear shoes? I know at least 4 people who absolutely never do.
Then the bugs and snakes eat them and ringworms :'(

Also poison ivy and brambles and stuff. I guess there's some people who have a persistent ironskin cast on their feet at birth or something but some of us are less lucky and live in a goddamn swamp. A swamp full of drunk people that like throwing beer bottles around and leaving shattered glass all over the place, because the local flora and flesh-hungering fauna needed help or something to bring ruin to your precious feetsies.

Though I guess you can toughen them up or something. I kinda' find that the cost of shoes is an acceptable one versus likely having to have glass shards and parasites surgically removed a few times before the feet callus/scar enough to have enough toughness to stop getting holes poked in it and homes excavated from it.

Which is kinda' a shame. I'd sorta' like to go barefoot if it didn't entail so much stepping on stuff that probably needs to be dug out and/or disinfected before bringing the feet into the homeplace :-\

... got nothing that a google for "Saint Olcan life" sans quotes wouldn't get you.

Only thing I'm seeing you might miss is that he's apparently also known as Saint Bolcan. Insofar as I can tell the biggest thing that may have contributed to sainthood was being a disciple of Saint Patrick and doing some solid churchwork in his area.

Re: The mother's grave thing, she apparently died of ague (which is... probably malaria?), not some much grief :P And apparently was in the grave seven days, which may have helped. Blazes if I know.

Yeah... I actually kinda' wonder if they really do have vienna sausage over in Europe. The name would sorta' suggest it, but at the same time...

... I ate some, yesterday. It tasted like sadness. Not even like tears. Tears are okay. Or melancholy or whatever, no. It tasted like sad. Just... sad. Worst tasting edible thing I've eaten in quite a long time. The Ramen of meat, except worse. Europe's got better taste than that, right? That's what they say, I think.

People eat that stuff over here. It's pretty cheap. And it was pretty damned filling. Just... at a devil's price.

... E Nomine has a rather nice heavy metal-ish rendition of the Lord's Prayer. One up the gospel with heavy metal gospel.

See how many brains it short circuits. I've always kinda' wondered what would happen if some of the old devil's music crowd got bludgeoned with some pious heavy metal.

It's also quite depressing when we start talking about independence, separatism etc and then instantly get into the militaristic/war side of things. I thought we were beyond that bullshit. We're Western and it's 2013, not 1783.
... what exactly would you expect to happen otherwise? I mean, damn, it's not exactly common decency or whatever that's keeping Europe from collapsing into a brawl, it's that stepping out of line would get you squished. Same for everywhere else. 300 years can do a lot but human's still human and the way we operate over a large area is still more or less the same. Give us an "other" that has loot and the inability to stop us from taking it and we will. Individuals can operate differently but the aggregate effect is still pretty much the same, y'know?

S'one of the reasons that globalization and cultural intermingling is by and large a good thing. The less imaginary lines and tradition mismatches we have between one another the harder it is to dehumanize our fellow man and the less likely we have things turn to violence. Throwing a lot of imaginary lines into a previously integrated entity is a good way to foster artificial hostility, which would be one of the reasons why consideration of Balkanization and related concepts pretty much inevitably degenerates into talk of the inevitable violence that'd come from it.

Other Games / Re: Angband - Are you a bad enough dude to kill Morgoth?
« on: March 03, 2013, 04:09:35 am »
Angband!

... I can't really stand playing vanilla Angband. I've actually beaten Furyband (Murdered Morgoth from around a corner >_>) and I think steamband (water naturalist cross-map artillery, yo'.), reached the end content of a few versions of Portralis and played the crap out of several other variants, but playing vanillia is just painful for me. I can't stand grinding (and suck too much to dive :P), the critters combinations aren't really interesting enough to me to bother with, and the dungeon is kinda' boring (especially comparatively, stacked up against stuff like the ToME line and variants like UnAngband). I've become addicted to stuff like Incursion and ToME4 where there's a lot of character expression right off the bat and the aesthetics are a bit... friskier. Angband still gets a helluva' nod. It's inspired a lot of good roguelike development.

I freaking love the terminal windows, though. Everything should have dockable terminal-style windows. No exceptions. All the things.

Though I think I haven't posted in the upper boards since I joined.
Waking up at 2:42 AM meant I immediately and sleepily checked your stats out of curiosity. 35 times! 51 if you count posts in modding. T4 chat habits  have led to a tendancy to response to "I think" statements (my own included) with "let's go check, ahahahahahahaha". Playing an open source game with fairly readable code and a chat component does things to a person. The maniacal laughter is only sporadic. ... filtering out the chat so I can actually play instead of compulsively check code less sporadic.

... it's been a while since I've posted in the upper boards, too. Did fire up DF recently and have been playing several mods for the hell of it. I like that DFHack makes it much less effort intensive to make superfast minions these days. Not that [speed:0] (tootiredtocapslockbutnottootiredtotypethisheehee) was ever effort intensive but still!

... ones that don't need food, drink, sleep, or emotion still takes a little effort. Days I wish I had a better computer so that having enough critters to get anything done at more than a painful speed didn't turn the game into a screaming FPS morass from hell. But oh well! I can get over 20 or so nowadays, which is nice.

Did have an amusing thing a week or two ago where one of the mods implemented robots or something as a race without paying attention to certain fiddly bits. Cue nudity-embarrassment tantrum spiral and starvation for a species that's supposed to get by on just liquid-stuff and natively starts without clothes.

Think Niv's asking if there's an all-random mode or somethin'. Which there is an ARAM mode, via the proving ground. Maybe more via the other custom options? S'been a while since I've looked at a custom game.

And yeah, there's a random button during critter select, but you can just keep pressing it if you feel like. Nothing like DotA's system, as champ select occurs before the game even starts.

Otherwise might be asking if there's a random option that can hit characters you don't have access to. That, there isn't. Random'll only pick from heroes you've got.
