General Discussion / Re: The Crossover Thread

FD's omni-battle thing. Man. I'd put my bets on Archer, followed by Nanoha. The Blink thing I didn't remember, but if he's just immune to spells Archer would fillet the poor bastard, and everything else is just... from lower power realities, so to speak. Archer's actually a bit broken in an arbitrary sense -- dude's primary shtick is to be able to recreate magical artifacts, and then potentially supercharge them and make them explode. He's largely limited only by the arsenal you decide to let him play with, and for the period before reality notices they're there, the stuff he makes is as real and physical as the originals. His secondary shtick is he's basically a self-made Elder God of Swords, at least in a limited physical area. Reality marbles are wonderful, heh. E: Wait, wait. It might depend on the Archer. The one before CG-Shirou... might actually have been worse, I'unno.

As for Nanoha, magery's all well and good in the case of the rest of them, but she's something a little bit different. Crazy witch is a human sized mecha, with most of what that entails, with a side course of magical fuckery. Gandalf can You Shall Not Pass all he wants, I don't think it's going to help much against a beam of energy capable of scuttling an interplanetary warship from over the horizon.

As for the rest... yeah, those two are in the category that can casually destroy mountains and/or countries/(in archer's case, potentially planets, given the right kit. Iirc, there's anti-planet level artifacts out there. Dude could also just conjure up a sun crusher or whatever.), if they particularly feel like it. The rest of the lot are a bit more... subtle, from what I remember.

Yeaaahh... bit different over here, at least in Florida. There is a learner's permit... but it's not mandatory. It's for folks that want to start driving at 15 or 16 (forget the exact year, bleh). There's no probationary period, and, as far as I'm aware, no "gold license" equivalent. There's specific qualifications for certain vehicles (a general-use car/truck license is not a motorcycle license is not a semi license, etc.), but nothing above and beyond that. In my personal case -- I never had driving lessons. I never had a probationary period. I went into the local department of motor vehicles when I was of age (actually a bit after, I didn't get my license until I was 21 or so -- no need for it.), did a small paper test, then drove the tester around a bit (buggered up a little on a couple things, but overall passed -- it doesn't have to be strictly perfect, just the fuck-ups kept small). Then they gave me my license. And that was that. Once you've got it, your license is as full and unrestricted as someone who has been driving impeccably for half a century, so far as I'm aware.

That was that, and that was more qualification assurance than I'd have to go through to get a gun. Or a concealed carry permit (which I've already qualified for once, though I never sent in the paperwork due to processing fees).

Play With Your Buddies / Re: Let's Play Tales of Maj'Eyal
« on: February 08, 2013, 09:07:52 pm »
Put this way: Careless play can get you a lot further in T4 than it can in DCSS. T4's overall considerably more forgiving about... like, everything. Mostly. You've got a lot better access to a lot more powerful tools than pretty much anything DCSS offers.

Now, T4 will still pound you into pace if you sequentially fuck up enough times, but it's not quite as enthusiastic about it. But yeah, T4, especially on the most played difficulty (adventurer/normal) is pretty darn forgiving. Considering you end up with 7+ chances to die, you've got a lot more leeway about things.

There kinda' is. At this point, I wouldn't be terribly surprised if the combined weight of the beta keys could bring in some of the smaller countries in the world. Maybe even some of the not-so-small ones.

But yeah, I've still got nine or so laying around. Other people have, like, more.

Science, have you gone to far?!?!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=IfUaKXasdD4

I declare that science has not yet gone too far enough!

Science will have gone too far when we consider dicking around with our past selves by traveling back in time, gender flipping them (to a previously unknown sixteenth or so gender), and then shoving them into a constructed sub-dimension made entirely of breathable jello as the normal method of afternoon entertainment.

Bitch please. Anthro planes.
Get on my level. Do you even internet?

(I would recommend not if people may be watching you, or you're at work.)
Anthro planes are kinda' tame. Japan/the internet's long habit of anthromorphizing military and commercial (fictional and otherwise) hardware is so long running it's basically blasé nowadays.

... Zaku-chan's kinda' cute, anyway. So hush. Though we apparently need submarine ones or something. could have sworn I've seen some of those, actually...E:Ha! Found one! SFW, but not sure if the site it comes from is, so no links. But humanized submarines exist. Go-go internet!

This is some pretty interesting music. Caught some elder scrolls in this one, but also caught quite a few other parts of things as well (most of which I can't quite name as the song/movie is something I can't quite recall).
EDIT: Mars bringer of war reminds me (among other things) of Star Wars music.
It is entirely possible Williams was influenced by Holst to some degree, t'be honest. The planets suite was done a good sixty years before star wars came out, was pretty darn popular, and Williams was classically trained and from a musical background, so he likely had encountered it.

Could... could send Williams an email and ask, maybe. Dude's still alive.

... no purple. So, uh. Abstaining. Purple is best color, and in its absence I refuse to vote for inferior hues.

Yeeaahhh... that "nothing buggers up" part? You just hit it :-\

So far as I'm aware, there's no way to get stuff back from him after you did that. If you gave him any artifacts (yellow items) you can at least kill him and they'll probably drop, but anything else is... probably lost forever. Also, he now can't move and there's not really any way to fix it.

Sad thing is, I'm actually the one that suggested that feature :-[

Still, bug is bug. I've reported it over on the T4 forums, and it'll probably be fixed whenever the next version rolls around. Sorry about the trouble, bleh.

If you're playing alchemist, you should be able to click on the critter's portrait, uh. Wherever that is on minimalist, I'unno. Then enter your inventory as normal and have access. Alternately, just hit F2. If you haven't buggered with the keybindings, the F# stuff will swap control/give orders to appropriate party members. Then, providing the critter has an inventory and nothing buggers up, you should be able to manipulate its equipment the same way you do the player's.

Nah, you can just use Frumple if you intend to mention me, I use the same moniker over on T4's forum. And yeah, Tales of Maj'Eyal is the latest incarnation of ToME, having discarded the Tolkien background for an original setting. It's pretty different from the old Angband variant it started as, heh.

Hell, if you haven't tried getting a hold of 'im already, you might try hitting DarkGod up. He's recently shifted Tales of Maj'Eyal onto Desura and might be interested in spread it further.

Not really sure if "sell", per se, is the right word, though. The game is free and largely open source, but what DG's been doing is letting folks buy through other services (Desura, so far, but a greenlight is being attempted as well) and having that count as a donation (which opens up donator status, which is mostly cosmetic things with a bit of early access on the side). Fair caveat that I have no real idea what Gamersgate is or if DG'd be interested, or if there'd be some kind of conflict of interest with him aiming for multiple sell points. But it might not hurt to pass a message along.

As for the game itself, it's basically a modernized roguelike. Graphical options, fairly slick UI, lots of ease of use features, unlocking system and achievements, plus in-game chat integration and other such shenanigans, and a quite deep and involved combat system and generally well written lore. It's definitely one of my overall favorite games.

Heat makes the brain melt.

I actually vaguely remember that being somewhat scientifically correlated. Supposedly our brains work a bit better when they're somewhat cool. As opposed to, y'know, 110F in the shade. You don't think in that weather. You sweat. And suffer.

Lackadaisic fact checking's mostly showing that it's extremes in general that causes more of a problem, though, so you'd expect temperate climates to be doing better about that. Who knows.

I'll stick with brain melting. Florida is a goddamn miserable place to live ~3/4ths of the year. Maybe it's not as bad further north, but... yeah.

23248
Huh. Did one of the books even cover that? I know there's actually quite a few of the Wizard of Oz book things, I've just, uh. Never read any of them.

Other Games / Re: Sony PS4 DRM?
« on: February 07, 2013, 03:26:35 am »

It has been this way for five years because many games are developed with portability in mind with current gen console in mind as lower target

As soon as the next gen console is here, expect the low system requirement to rise dramatically as optimizations are a real cost in game development.
I... pretty significantly doubt that. Minimum reqs will only go up as the general low end systems improve and become ubiquitous, not as the upper limit stuff increases notably. Otherwise you're cutting out a pretty major chunk of your potential market, since people tend to hang on to computers longer than they do consoles, or often aren't running dedicated gaming rigs. Relatively low minimum specs means a solid market increase.

In any case, one major advantage I've had with PCs is, well, forward compatibility. Five years down the line, I might not still be able to run stuff at max graphics, but there's a really good chance it'll still be runnable at medium or low settings. For a console, forward compatibility basically doesn't exist. I can't stick a PS3 disc into a PS2 and have it work. I can stick quite a few PC games made in 2006 into computers made in 2000 and have them work. Perhaps not perfectly or at max quality, but it'll still do a pretty drat good job of functioning. And I can reasonably expect a top-tier computer now to still be able to play whatever comes out two or three console cycles from now.

Still, it's not impossible that we see an upward shift when crossplatform development doesn't have as heavy a console yoke around its neck. Be interesting to see.

Eehh. Beyond the whole kill-all-bugs thing, Buddha himself said that if you come across him, strike him down. I figure four times the number of limbs and eyes requires eight to sixteen times the necessary force to appropriately strike down. Suborbital bombardment takes out the fiddly calculation bits. It makes sure of things.
