Really Blitz? You gonna grab me out of my ult? Needs more experience, though.
Huh. Pulls etc. just flat out cancel Vi's ult? That's...

... kinda' hilarious. I guess there's more than one ult like that, but it's still thoroughly amusing when someone's like, "R! BOOM! HEADSH-" "Q, bitch." "WTF!" And then there's a death and a minute+ cooldown down the drain or whatev'. Dat schadenfreude, yo'.

Though, note to self. If playing Vi during free week, don't ult the blitz >_>

I don't think you are calculating defense accurately.
No... going by the simplified formula in the translated manual (which, according to the manual, is a little off but generally sufficiently accurate), a base 20 attack critter has a damage range of 16-24, the exact number chosen at random and then the attacked creature's defense just flat subtracted. Given a +defense of 5 (three from the commander's skill at max, two from kit), at 16, it'd be 16-5, or 11 as a result, a reduction of a lil'less than a third. With 24, it'd be 19, a damage reduction of around a bit more than a fifth, and that's just the commander's bonus, versus the highest attack third rank creature in the game. Like I said, I would count a reduction ranging from about a third to about a fifth as pretty substantial, m'self. And that's only versus the absolute highest damage 3rd rank in the game and using a defense 0 unit as the attacked -- against everything else, using any other base, the damage reduction should be even more notable. Morale or various abilities can throw things out of line a fair bit, but just by the raw numbers, I like what I'm seeing.

Now, mind you, that doesn't necessarily mean that warriors or wizards don't outmatch a commander -- I'm just noting that the bonus from a (mid to early teens, probably) commander with fairly moderate equipment is pretty darn notable. Commanders are almost certainly cheaper, though, between the lowered troop upkeep and neither doing direct fighting (top line equipment gets massively expensive to repair, from what I've seen so far.) nor spell slinging constantly, the commander doesn't seem to have quite the same level of resource cost to it, either.

And looking at it, morale's actually a damage multiplier if it gets high enough. There might be an argument for commander led third/fourth rank critters doing some really devastating stuff... the higher the critter's damage, the bigger the benefit from high morale, and there's not much quite as good as commanders (maybe a commander -> wizard for some morale boosting buffs, I'unno.) for getting that morale up there.

*scratches head* Looking through the translated manual, I'm seeing 20 or so as the highest base attack (on one of the demons) on rank 3s... a commander with a mere +2 party defense from kit (Which I've seen on single items >_>) and the maxed defensive talent skill would be cutting their damage by a fourth (and it's much stronger against everything else). I wouldn't exactly call that being obsoleted, y'know?

If you crossed it with warrior at some point, you'd be getting an additional point of defense and cutting that highest base by nearly a 3rd.

I mean does Romeo and Juliet mean anything differently when you know that Shakespeare was a horrible horrible racist?
Nah, Romeo and Juliet means something different when you realize Shakespeare was using it to satirize/mock romantic love :P

It wasn't so much a romantic/tragedy play as a, "Look how goddamn crazy these two idiots are" play.

And the range and XP gain boost. Those seem kinda' important, especially the former. Commander does get some unique kit (banners, primarily) that seems like they'd help make more of a difference past the rank 1 stuff... still haven't got around to making a fully fleshed out hero t'see what an end-game one looks, like, though. Rank four stuff definitely seems like it's over and beyond what a commander would be able to strongly influence, but everything below that's looked like they benefit pretty strongly.

Still, some cross-classing on a commander seems like it'd be a good idea. I'd figure scout (for further initiative and terrain knowledge/mobility) or wizard (for obvious reasons), rather than trying to make the commander itself a strong fighter via going warrior.

Yeah... over the years, I've largely realized it's silly, s'just become so much of a habit... yeah. That and the non-zero (vanishingly damn small, but you know what they say about one in a million chances...) chance of someone from my area actually happening upon something I've written online, which could pretty easily have negative consequences. Environment induced paranoia mixing with years old habit, heh. Don't even know if I'd loosen up about it if I were in a safer area, though. Don't really self-identify with my given name. Or this alias, really, it's just become comfortable. Titles are largely arbitrary and meaningless t'me -- I am what I say, not what I say I am :P

S'always been pretty damn freeing to be that, really. Fleshbag has too much baggage, ha. More are what you're called, than what you do. Stifling, some days.

Man, I remember the whole stalker from the internet thing, To this day I have pretty much never used real information online. S'probably my biggest disconnect with folks younger than me, I still can't really grok using strongly personally identifiable information online. Mind you, I've been using the same alias fairly consistently for over a decade now, so there's a sense of continuous self online, but... yeah.

Anyway, I'm a few years younger than you, and remember starting to muck with the internet a bit earlier (still in the single digits); I distinctly remember playing around a little with a z-modem that mi madre got a hold of from school, and her wonder at it all... talking with engineers in India in the early 90s, stuff like that. Was and still is kinda' magical, man. Then things got fuzzy for a while (I was constantly sleep deprived for four or five years, and my recollection of those years are kinda' shot.), and I don't really remember much beyond Infantry (which taught me more about proper english than the english classes I've had, disturbing as that is) and eventually finding fanfiction (Free reading, good god!). That and like, angelfire websites, everywhere.

Especially since it sounds like we're dealing with Chryssalids. Get the Rookies with stun rods and HE.

FTFY.
FTFY
FTFY
Best part about this one is we've actually got, like, a shitload of those in 'merica, and there might be some karma involved with handing the police force HE 'nades and sending them after Chryssalids tasers first.

Although seriously, I have no idea where you get this idea what I hate you.

I mean. You're not wrong. But most people I hate are unaware. DID YOU CRACK THE CODE?!?

Woah. That's... three. Huh. Well, ah. Your steam thingy comes out as Flamey, right? Sent invite.

I'm not sure what else I'm signed up in, but barring the special one, I'm saying I revert to my mystery giveaway caveat for anything left if I hit it. Frumple's name comes up again on the top, give it to whoever's on the bottom, providing they haven't won anything yet. Or just withdraw me, whichever is more amusing.

George R.R. Martin hates fan-works (and by extension much of human storytelling history, because oral tradition is roughly equivalent to fan fiction etc. etc.)
Anne McCaffrey's in the same boat, actually, or at least willing to let her lawyers send out cease and desist letters.

I'd be amused to see what direction a derail thread on the subject would go in, but... eh.

Is any of this information really something I "should" know?

Is coloring the books I read something I should be doing or should I be reading books on their own merit?
Oh, probably not, and probably the latter. Most that might occur is give reason not to buy the books (or buy them second hand) if you don't want to be supporting someone who professes beliefs you'd rather not support. I certainly stopped buying McCaffrey's stuff after finding out her position on fan works (mind you, that wasn't exactly some great sacrifice as I'm not terribly fond of her stuff to begin with, but... yeah.). Borrow it from a library, sure, but buy in a way that the money gets back to 'er, nah.

Merry early Christmas, Bay12. Hope you like cooking.
While I won't click on the undescribed youtube link, I will say that I do like cooking. Christmas eve, I shall make fudge. And maybe gingerbread cookies, I'unno. The upcoming chocolate orgy makes me happy.

So, um. Did he actually buy everyone that voted for him a beer? Invalid election or not, if he didn't have a victory rider on that statement he owes a good chunk of people some poison.

Is he even allowed to check who voted for him? Innit that supposed to be, like, confidential? Would that mean he just has to set up like a massive keg at city hall or something and have a BYOM (bring your own mug) event?

'Course, it kinda' depends on the plane. We've got VTOL machines, and they'd pretty much definitely be able to lift off in that scenario :P

So...does anyone else get an irrational feeling of apprehension now that the time is at hand? Or is that just me?
Just you~

... well, and all the other folks experiencing it. There's always that tiny lil'chance that, maybe, just maybe, this time the crazies will actually be right.

But personally, not so much. I'm pretty sure I've already lived through at least five or six "the world ends today" dates. Mind you, that doesn't necessarily mean it won't happen next time (even if it's worked previously, a car tire will eventually go flat), but it does kinda' reinforce that irrational or poorly supported doomsday proclamations are probably as bugaboo as the folks proclaiming them.

The sun'll start expanding in, what, a few million years? That's my doomsday, and it's pretty likely to actually happen :P
