General Discussion / Re: The Morality of Killing
« on: December 19, 2012, 09:39:11 pm »
Basically, your point is: We should kill the people who CHOOSE not to produce, but not the people that CANNOT produce.

Yes, thank you.
Sounds like a position that would be strongly supportive of reinstating child labor. Consequences, consequences... produce or die seems like a silly thing to attempt to actually institute.

... what about the quality of papers, though? Because I've seen plenty that... well, it's that classic, "I'm pretty damn sure the author wasn't writing about that. Sometimes the author specifically said otherwise. You can construe it that way, sure, but I think you may be reading between lines that don't actually exist." sort of thing. Well spun bullshit is still bullshit :P Though it's definitely true the line between bullshit and academic analysis is admittedly somewhat fine. Usually have to know the technical language of the field in question to be able to discern if it's BS or not.

As a general heuristic, though, yeah, that's better than most. Still, I've read a lot of fanfiction that you could pull quite a bit of academic-level literary analysis out of your arse about, if anyone cared to. People look at folks that actually do that like they're silly, though :P

Huh, so would this soda tea be a good use of flat soda? Because I tend to have a ton of that laying around.
It'd definitely be usable. Flat soda seems to taste a bit better when it's boiled into that state instead of reaching that way normally. Blazes if I know why. But the tea does add something extra that improves it over just being flat.

Give it a shot, I'd say. Experimentation is fun, so long as you don't manage to find something that turns toxic. And I haven't yet!

This. Unless you're trying to gain weight you really shouldn't be drinking your calories. I find it's good to compare a soda like a candy bar... you wouldn't eat 3-4 bars in addition to meals and snacks, 'cause it's just plain gluttony. But since soda is 'just a drink', we justify it easier. This goes for booze as well. (sadly)
Relevant, heh.

And yeah, caffeine withdrawal isn't too bad after the first week or two, at least in my experience. I've gone through it a few times, actually. In dei's case, though, I think there's other circumstances involved that would make the additional stress of it ('cause it is somewhat unpleasant, if nothing compared to more heavily addictive stuff) rather untenable at the moment. Maybe once other things settle down, it'll become easier to deal with.

The opposite. When an animal (including humans) is in pain, it will secrete something that will pollute the muscles and make it less tasty and more strong. Most of that "bad meat" is dumped, or discounted. That's why in the old times, they tried to cut the throat of an animal, so that muscles were left in state.
It could be probably avoided if slaughterhouse were more efficient, but considering the huge production of meat animals, nearly nobody cares.
Musta' been something else, then. Pretty sure there's something about the way factory-farm type things are set up that improves meat quality... somehow. Might not have been pain, per se, but something else. Forget the details, bleh.

vvvv
Might have been it!

What have the rainforests every done to you? ;_;
Candiru.

Seriously though, and I've probably got no place to be saying it considering the last posts I've made in here, we should probably take rainforest shenanigans elsewhere. Sad thread's getting IRC derailed, methinks.

You're boiling it in a pot, right ? What are the best combination you got so far ?

Also, couldn't you just drink tea (black tea ?) with lots of sugar for the same effect ? Did you tried ice boiled soda-tea ?
Boiling it in a pot, yeah, generally. You can also microwave th'soda and steep in that, comes out about the same -- just stick a toothpick in the bowl or cup with the soda to make sure you keep the surface broken, helps make sure it doesn't explode. It doesn't take very long, either, two-three minutes at the most, iirc, just nuke it 'till it's hot and flat. Best combinations so far have mostly been mountain dew with cheap-arse honey/lemon/ginseng wal-mart obtained tea -- the purple stuff they had years ago was the best, but the normal stuff works fine, too. Comes out kinda' grape-ish, just... sweeter. Secondary tier's been boiled Barqs root beer with th'same green tea or gojiberry tea, which... I can't really describe in words, beyond "sweet". Some orange minutemaid with th'same honey-etc. green and some extra honey turned out alright too, when I was feeling a lil'sick. I wouldn't recommend orange soda with orange-infused tea, though. That didn't go very well (children's aspirin, yo'.). I think I've tried black soda-tea once, but I can't recall with what. Mostly I just throw together whatever's on hand and see if it works. Usually it's decent enough I can drink it, if not very memorable either way.

I've tried cooled, yeah, and it's still pretty decent. Did that with coca-cola and green, and I think Barqs and... something. Drank the remains of the same pot over a few days a couple times. As for th'lots-of-sugar thing... I actually haven't really tried that (I usually use honey if I want to further sweeten my tea), but I imagine the texture'd come out different, and likely the taste. It's not just raw sugariness, but that's the closest description I can come to it.

I just stick to diet soft drinks.  All of the soft drink flavor, none of the sugar!  And caffeine I guess... not that it does anything to me.
Diet soda's arguably worse for you than regular soft drinks, from what I understand :P I can't stand the taste of most artificial sweeteners (especially in drinks), though, so diet's mostly out for me.

Yes. Yes it will. It's... surprisingly good. Most of the time it comes out akin to something like liquid sugar. Less viscous syrup, y'ken? Or really, really sweet tea.

I mean, it's hard not to be surprisingly good considering the first time I tried it I was kinda' expecting it to explode, but I've actually had people who had no investment in my happiness or interest in humoring me drink the stuff and give positive reviews (And frankly, the fact that I actually managed to convince people in real life to drink the stuff to begin with should say something :P).

Please elaborate.
It's nothing complicated. Take coca-cola or mountain dew or a knock-off brand or whatever. Boil it. Steep green tea. Caffeinated tea in general, really. Drink. If you like it sweet, it's hard to top. Though how good it is varies based on type of soda and type of tea. I've had some pretty impressive variation, but several that turned out excellent to my palate.

... wouldn't recommend steeping green tea into hot chocolate, though. That... didn't end well.

Every one I've tried (which, being fair, is limited) has tasted horrid and didn't give me as strong nor as lengthy an energy high as using soda as a base for green tea (which often tastes delicious). So, I don't drink the stuff. Nasty, and not sufficiently effective to be worth the yuck.

Yeah, tissue culture'd be good, too. I was thinking along the lines of textured/flavored soy or some such nonsense, but honestly, whatever works. Even if the suffering makes the meat more delicious (literally, no joke. Iirc, pain does something that... tenderizes? Think that was it.), I imagine we could just engineer the vat grown stuff to come out the same way.

And damn, designer food. Honestly, a steak not troubled by the inefficiencies of getting it from a cow? Hot damn. You could have a steak the size of a football field! And, like, invite the whole neighborhood for a weekend long steak consuming (non-sexual... probably) orgy. Helluva' lot better way to spend the weekend than watching sunday football.

... oh yeah, those synergize, don't they? Hrm. I was primarily getting the q up first for the extra cash, actually, though picking up pickpocket from utility (which I'd be going down anyway for movement speed) would give nice returns anyway, since it triggers off the q. And I'm basically setting up for constant harass anyway. Think I'll have to try that next time I give it a go.

Vayne's an idea. Only worry for me is that you'd have to actually be there for three shots, which even with a high AS (not hard to get, several of the better MS items boost it, too) is generally long enough to get whacked back. Nice thing about parley is you just q and turn around, then come back a couple seconds later and do it again. Kinda' like mundo and his cleavers, just not a skillshot and somewhat shorter ranged (well, and GP gets a constant MS buff in addition to a temporary one). Definitely give it a roll next time she's up on free week, though.

And singed, yeah, he'd fit fairly well. Fling'd be weaker damage wise than normal, but the fact that it'd be basically impossible to get away from it would be a lil'terrifying, methinks.

So... hrm. Would that mean that banning video games is one step toward banning television?

... suddenly my morals waver and temptation grows within. The thought of daytime drama and entertainment news becoming contraband is akin to a blessed dream to me... I'm... not sure I would mind the excising of commercial video game sales in exchange for that.

If you can't tell the difference, you can't tell the difference. Processed in the lab isn't really that big of a change from processed through a plant that was processed through a cow. Did talk like there's still issues with it, though (contamination was mentioned, so... yeah.). But if the technology/methodology improves...
