General Discussion / Re: School shooting in Connecticut

Personally the idea of a kindergarten teacher carrying a firearm in school completely sets my brain into irrational mode. Logically I know there is no real difference between a security guard carrying a firearm and a teacher carrying one, or a high school teacher carrying and a kindergarten teacher carrying, but somewhere along the way my reason grinds to a halt and somebody sets off the "Holy shit that is the worst idea I've ever heard" alarm.

It's not even close to the worst idea I've ever heard, but I think that's the reason it likely won't happen.
Oh, it's horrible for all sorts of reasons (plenty of them psychological -- there's issues with bringing violence into a classroom, and culturally firearms represent violence.*), don't mistake that, but it's something I could at least contemplate discussion about if the American system wasn't worth jack-all for making sure our gun owners are actually capable individuals -- and I'm saying that as an American gun owner, who's cleared the reqs for a concealed carry permit. Whatever's keeping America's firearm related injuries (violent or otherwise) as low as they are damn sure isn't the formal aspects related to them. Though it does vary a bit by area, from what I understand, the fact that there's areas like the one I'm in pretty much undermine any better implemented systems.

*Can start by looking into fairly old, at this point, research into priming in regards to violence and work your way forward and around. It's not something we want in a classroom, especially for younger kids.

I say just post police to schools.

You don't let 1,000 people into a stadium without atleast one security guard, do you? Hell, I see Macy's with better on-site protection than schools. We need to stop living in the fantasy world where people [and students] don't attack schools and be prepared accordingly.
Maybe. Part of me really wishes we could figure out a way of preparing accordingly that didn't make our schools look even more like prisons, y'know? A lot of schools do have attendant or attached police officers, though, from what I've seen. No doubt varies by area,, o'course.

Caveat that to the requirements for a concealed carry actually being worth a shit, and we might be able to talk. I put exactly jack zero confidence in the states' concealed carry procedures, right now, at least in Florida. And considering the number of other states that accept a Florida carry permit... yeah. I've been through what you've got to do to get a permit and... no. If you're going to put a weapon in the hands of a school teacher you need a hell of a lot more than that.

Portrait of bald dude with pimp robe gets my vote. And purple, for the color.

Throwing in for archmage as well, and a percentile bonus if you can fit it. Or archmage and a hero, plus, like, lesser heal or something. Whichever fits better.

And beasties, because gimping amuses me.

Also, bonus challenge mode: Clear out at least one other world before victory. Maybe make an alternate save for that, for a post-win reload and rumble.

Summoned RK to the very thread RK started, actually. This is just a general thing based on the OP, the shooting thread is for that incident in particular.

A person could steal a gun in Switzerland, as the perp did, just as easily as they can here.
That's... kinda' hilariously untrue. If it were even remotely accurate, you'd be seeing the same level of illegal gun violence (read: violence via stolen weapons) in switzerland that you do in the states. Which, you don't. They've got fairly decent gun control policy over there, even with the high ownership levels, and more importantly a quite vastly different societal situation. The state's practices are... somewhat notably worse.

No, it doesn't show that. Not really much else to say beyond that.

Kinda' wish this thread hadn't made me curious as to what kind of death rate youngin's are hitting in a more global sense. Tragedy's a tragedy, but... I'unno. Ran some rough numbers, looks like somewhere around twenty-six thousand kids died today if the 10 million/year, for those five and under, that wikipedia spat out is distributed evenly per day. I know, I know, we can multitask and "bigger problems" is somewhat irrelevant and whatever, it's just, I guess it hits me less. What is twenty gone when twenty thousand went with them? Had 800 or so pass today, going by just the USA, if the CIA's numbers on infant mortality are similarly distributed. Somewhat different age group, sure, but...

I guess it's a disproportionate response thing, or... something? I'unno. Kinda' hate general media more and more. Glad no one's been home today to turn on the TV and get hit with the circus around this thing :-\ Heart goes out to th'folks who lost family, s'just... small, I guess? Unsure about it, really. Probably end up waiting 'till more information is available to have any opinion beyond that.

Militiamen do have one potentially good use which their description hints at -- especially on a low crystal map. 10 gold may be less valuable than the 4 crystal it'd take to magic arrow something to death, or the two-three turns or whatev' it'd take to magic spark a corpse into existence. Hurl a militiaman at something and you've probably pretty promptly got a corpse you can turn into something undead :P They also approach decent en-masse thrown against a single target to drain its stamina while something ranged plinks away. I've held off some warriors and suchlike doing that.

Militiamen also have something interesting. If you can manage to get a few levels into them (good luck, but I've had it happen) they can upgrade into spearmen. I was a lil'surprised when that happened.

I actually just had some pretty good luck with a barbarian/shaman party lead by a scout -- I was using necromancy pretty heavily on my main hero, but didn't have the crystal income for much of the fight to keep re-raising zombies and didn't want the moral penalty on my sword/pikemen, so I went neutral/unscrupulous to fill in gaps in his battleline. Barbs are actually pretty tanky and hit decently hard, plus have that little ranged attack -- they're about in the same position as zombies, really, just faster and much harder to get high leveled ones (Mage with 5 necro and 3 summon was spitting out 13th level zombies, iirc, which are basically doombeasts.). Shaman are... surprisingly useful, especially one or two supporting some ranged power (e.g. a scout). The free curses are quite nice for breaking down something's armor a bit or cutting into something's offense, and the magic ranged attacks are non-trivial in a lot of situations. I'll likely start throwing in one or two for any future commander led bowmen parties I make. All in all, they're very mobile and easy to move around, which can be tactically more useful than the pike/sword/crossbowmen, sometimes.

I wouldn't touch the brigands or the thieves with a ten foot pole, though. Thief poison might be useful, sometimes, but the fact that they reduce province income is just... no.

Ah, and Re: Scout vs. mage sniping... from what I've seen, scouts can snipe way, way better, at least earlier on. Find an alright bow and go heavy into the ranged stuff, and 20-30+ damage per arrow before mid-teens seems pretty standard, which... magi have a bit more trouble pulling off, at least for me, so far. Mages are more useful in general, though, by a long shot. Just expensive to make use of, heh.

Over here, a cupboard is basically any space you put things in. For clothes we have wardrobes and chests of drawers.
Related WTF: I just realized I've spent my entire life thinking those were called "chester drawers".  :-[
Chest o'drawers + southern drawl = Chester drawers. It's understandable -- that's exactly what it sounds like in most of the accents down here. It took some few minutes of getting people to like, spell the damn thing out when I was a kid to figure it out, too. Though we usually just call 'em drawers around here. Chest's too fancy for us poor folk to have :P

VVV
That, too. Let us never be accused of only having one word to call something.

Ah, damaged stuff is more... understandable. Sorta'.

It's still a book, and a book is for keeping. Damaged book is for, like... foot rests. Or propping stuff up. Something. Not selling. Or giving away, or... letting it out of your sphere of possession.

It is entirely possible I may have a monstrously huge somewhat latent hoarder tendency towards books, though. One of the reasons I've been transitioning to digital as much as possible. Harder to run out of space for that, and much easier to reacquire, most of the time. Less... metaphysical weight, if you will. And physical weight. Computer tower much worse for bludgeoning than encyclopedia of philosophy. Less likely to still be usable afterwards. About the same efficacy as a mousepad, though. Book's a bit easier to maneuver around so it's comfortable.

Not sure where I was going with that. Take my books and I will take the functioning of your useful extremities via gratuitous use of toothpick.

Selling back books.
Frumple still has all Frumple's college books >_>

Getting rid of a book is, like, an outside context problem or something. Books are for keeping, and hiding in corners to shore up the foundation of your house. Or something. Not selling. Lending, maybe. But they come back home or the bibliophilic mongol horde comes for your head.

Helps that I liked all my higher education textbooks, so far.

Y'know, I hadn't noticed that.

Have they got it so the creepers, like, time it, yet? So say they start ticking X blocks up, setting themselves to explode when they're like, directly above you.

Because that would be awesome. You hear the hissing, spin around trying to see it, and have just enough time to go, "Hey, I don't see anythi-" before you get splattered across the countryside by a kamikaze freefall-creeper exploding like an inch above you..

I've taken a few of the early campaign ones solo, yeah, or functionally so (usually pick up a scout to do exploration stuff while my main dude rampages around the enemy's territory.).

Near as I can tell, there's no hard limit, but the more you have the higher the cost of getting new ones... and by higher, I mean it goes from hundreds of gold to tens of thousands of gold -- iirc, getting a second mage, ferex, as your third hero would cost you something like 15k gold and 5k crystal. Can't remember what the fourth one costs, but the third is either 1k or 1.5k gold (first is 100, second 500). There's some buildings that reduce the cost, but... yeah. By the time you're even getting a third one, you've probably already won the match, and if you manage to get a fifth (without repeating a class, so having one of each and then getting your first repeat), you've probably intentionally drawn out the game for... several hundred or a few thousand turns :P

What the hell. Scamming bastards just opened up a phone call claiming to be local police. While calling from a number outside of the country. And calling someone that knows the local police force by name and voice.

Wish I had remembered to remind that idiot that police impersonation is illegal in this country before I hung up in disgust.
