Independent sounds most amusing, I'd say (and, coincidentally, is one of the options I didn't take when I tried the demo :P), so that gets my vote. Dunno how much of a difference it'll make in the long run, though as long as you get a starbase up and running ASAP you'll probably have plenty of time to find out, heh.

Considerably more importantly, the joint has about a tenth of the american population. Not sure how well the states would weather losing that much population in one go :P

If we're going to do something like ditching a state, it'll need to be one of the low population, out of the way ones. That aren't important for other reasons.

We'd probably have better luck consolidating a few or splitting another one up. I'm pretty sure most of north florida wouldn't mind breaking the state into a couple of pieces.
