General Discussion / Re: What comes after J R Tolkien.
« on: October 28, 2012, 01:43:37 pm »
Cruelty may, perhaps, be in my nature. In all honesty, I've heard that there's been several Tolkien fanfics that came out very impressively. I just... haven't really read them. LotR didn't scratch very many of my literary itches, for whatever reason.

Now, the old starcraft LotR custom maps...

I'd probably recommend trawling through thrift shops and places like goodwill and hunting down ones that sell used books for a quarter and just pick up everything fantasy and see what comes out well. Sometimes you hit something pretty impressive, and considering you get like 20+ tries for the price of a normal commercial book nowadays...

Or scumming around ebooks that were released for free. Might find something, there's a good body of text out there, even avoiding the more dubious collections.

A light dusting of cinnamon apparently goes well on chicken. I am pleasantly surprised.

It's finally cold enough here to wear a long sieve shirt.
... what... what does a sieve shirt look like? I know of long sleeve ones, but I've never actually seen someone turn a sieve into a shirt. Wouldn't... wouldn't it be cold? It'd be sorta' like a really fine mesh, wouldn't it?

Finally decided it wanted to be cold-ish today. Fairly cool, perfectly overcast, little windy. Happy day weather, happy day.

Massive chunks of mountains, crap like black lung, huge bodies of water, gods know damming has caused problems above and beyond what nuclear's done to any particular city...

It's a pretty accurate statement. Yeah, nuclear's had its problems but, comparatively, it's been doing pretty well.

Rush?

Which one are we going for, again?

... though I'd totally dig hearing Rush do a dog-sound version of the Rush discography. Perhaps while driving something, I'unno. By your powers combined, etc., etc.

I know that's what it looks like, from our end, but... does it actually have an arse? Or, for that matter, one of the same sort and in the same area our kind would have it? I mean, that eye-looking thing. That could be its arse. Alien physiology, people! It could actually be hiding its excretionary areas out of decency.

Or you could give the power back to the King Of All Cosmos, you theiving bastards.
Innit that fellow taking a nap? Critter doesn't need th'power iffin' it's gonna' be dozin', does it? Blighter can spare a bit 'till it bothers to wake up, yeah.

I... I'unno. EoM was a bit better at things than Palpi until th'EoM got stuck to the golden toilet, I think. Post toilet he didn't really have much to do with much beyond being that glorified GPS thing.

Palpi was... actually pretty on the up and up, iirc... depending on the writer. Palp's level of competence varied wildly based on authorial competence, heh.

So, yeah. Taken as a whole neither are particularly good choices... but at their best, yeah, s'pretty good critter to mimic. Though they were dealing with pretty wildly different metaphysics (compared both to us and each other), so...

... I'd go with neutral. Anger's depressing, tiring, and usually counterproductive and depression's depressing (tiring, and rarely particularly useful), so... yeah. If y'can't go with a positive, go with a not-negative. Ambivalent is kinda' groovy, honestly. S'fairly easy to get from that to chill.

Minor, minor, but somewhat cheerful. Noticed it was getting slightly cool outside (Finally! Now if only it'll still be there at noon tomorrow :-\) and a bit windy, so got up and put tarp over baby chicken pen/cage/thing. They're now somewhat less likely to die due to cold-related things! Baby chickens apparently need to be pretty warm for the first month or so of their existence, and they haven't quite reached that far, yet.

Somewhat down side to it is actual owner-person was like, "Eh, let 'em freeze." People, neglect, not with living things! That's like, on my very small list of things I actually ask. Gwarble.

I'm gonna' go ahead and pre-emptively blame any damage that occurs on living on/near the coastline of a meteorological active ocean. It's what I do whenever a hurricane uproots a tree and lands it somewhere unpleasant down here in Florida, so... yeah. Not sure why people feel the need to blame it on something else, unless they're trying to avoid the white elephant in the discussion... [/pseudo-faked cluelessness] More seriously, any blame that's to be partitioned for disaster damages is better placed on people in the past (building construction and maintenance, preparedness, etc.) than anything reactionary, imo. Though borking things up as badly as Katrina went doesn't exactly help things, I'll give that.

Am kinda' suddenly curious, though. Any election historian buffs know if major weather stuff-things have gone down previously on or around voting periods and if there were any notable impacts 'cause of it?

2. This.
Hey, reload. Just re-read that one a few days ago, after chewing through the People Lie (different author, mind) stuff again. It's a pretty darn decent crack fic, yes it is. Shame it hasn't been updated in a while, but with that particular author... who knows.
