General Discussion / Re: Terrible Worldbuilding Ideas
« on: August 20, 2021, 09:35:24 am »
The world is the Norse mythology world where the world was made from pieces of Ymir's body, except not symbolically: the world you live in is literally pieces of his literal body
For what it's worth, you occasionally encounter stories where the setting is something or another's literal body. Dunno if anyone has done ymir or not, humanoids in general are relatively rare among 'em.

Not really terrible worldbuilding in practice, though. Folks have worked with it decently enough.

You do what you want recreationally,no qualms with that. I just want to point out that the electable one raised a little shit who cant keep care of his stuff. Dude would probably rather order a new laptop than get his wallet if he can't tip the bellboy with a swipe or a signature.
Hell drag, near as I can recall and tell from checking, we still don't even know if "hunter's laptop" even exists, just that some laptop was maybe (don't think we actually know for sure on that, even, due to the only public confirmation I could find being pictures shown by bloody fox) given to a blind computer repairman (who apparently made copies of the harddrive for himself and eventually gave one to a friggin' tabloid newspaper, but who actually knows) under hunter's name was handed off to the FBI.

Far as I'm aware not a single person more credible than a tortiseshell cat's left nut has confirmed the existence (especially as actually being hunter's) or contents of the purported machine to the general public. Meanwhile this latest crap from a UK tabloid puts the lost hunter biden laptop count at, what, three, four? More? The number seems to grow every time there's a slow news day.

North Carolina certainly sounds like a fun place.
It's generally better than the other carolina, for what staggeringly little it's worth!

In all seriousness, the catheter commercials are a different channel (though I can't recall which one at the moment), and usually seem to have an older lady ad-person thing.

Yeah, I'unno. Looked around a bit more and found articles saying stuff about a printing paper shortage going back to 2019, but I'm not seeing anything that suggests it's actually major or causing much meaningful disruption, especially not relative to other factors (mostly the human element, less folks willing to come in and work when we're still in the middle of a goddamn plague) or on a global scale. It definitely doesn't seem to be effecting the vendors I work with much, in any case...

Do you have a source on that one, mart?

Search found all of one article in a dutch news thing and that was it, and, like. You're talking about something that involves my job and our vendors have said exactly squat about paper shortages being the cause of delays or cancellations -- plague related stuff causing hiccups at other parts of the chain (transportation, direct manufacture, etc.), but not paper shortages -- and I haven't noticed anything unusual in terms of reprints being unavailable or somethin'.

... okay, so for folks in areas where it's legal (to advertise medical junk), do you also see regular erectile dysfunction/viagra commercials on TV, or is just the westerns channel my grandfather watches? Including like sketchy ass online pharmacy stuff.

'Cause I'm noticing whoever's buying ad slots for grit is apparently making some very clear calls on the channel's demographics and interests.

... also I'm very, very tired of hearing the slogan "roman ready", for all I give that commercial minor kudos for going with an interracial couple.

Not really related to the discussion, exactly, but it's kinda' wild -- I had remembered the US hasn't outlawed underage/child marriage, but I had either forgotten or never noticed how bloody pervasive statutes that allow for it is. Supermajority of the states allow for under 18/below state age of majority, nearly two dozen just flat out don't have a minimum legal age for marriage, with basically anything allowed if you can get the right waivers for it.

It's pretty fucked up. You'd think we could at least come together as a nation and say, "Y'know what, no goddamn married children," but apparently not.

If they were to outlaw child marriages (And demonstrably enforce that concept) as both the secular and religious leaders of the state, then, and only then, would it matter.
Hell, that's a level of commitment the US doesn't even meet. It'd be an interesting way to one-up the West.

... do note the daily fail is about the exact opposite of reliable.

Firebreak is the english word for it, LB, at least if you're doing it in front of an incoming blaze. It definitely is a common firefighting technique, at least when there's enough manpower to manage the work of it.

Think it's more that they care more about whatever money they're getting from the spammer, from what I recall of folks trying to figure that mess out. Apple's well aware most of its customers want nothing to do with that crap, they just have different priorities.

Also, I guess I'm getting old and cynical, in that you think that the funds not spent on health care premiums would be spent on more "useful" things instead of frivolity.
I mean, buying a knife to stab yourself (or maybe a health insurance ceo, I'unno) in the eye with would be more useful than paying health premiums in the current system, so it's not like the bar to pass here is exactly high :P

We've seen where freed up expenses and "free" money goes, though (and been seeing it for years and years), and most of it legitimately doesn't go to "frivolity" (nevermind the benefits involved with de-stressing activities and the economic knockon effects). I've been around shitpoor people all my life, and folks much helped by these kinds of changes just don't bloody operate like that. It's just not how most people act or think, at all, especially with all the horseshit they have to deal with these days.

The younger generations are literally killing industries due to not acting like that.

They'd find something else to do, probably at least somewhat involving the new economic activity that would come from nixing much of the wasteful predatory vultureshit inherent in the insurance industry and our fucked up healthcare system and letting the money sunk into it flap off to somewhere more useful. There'd definitely be short term disruption, which would suck for the ground level folks for a bit, but that happens with any major economic effect.
