General Discussion / Re: Things that made you sad today thread.

... if it makes anyone feel better, I'm pretty sure you could occasionally see those back in like the 90s or early 00s or somethin', too, just very rarely and much less intrusive or whatever (due to lower bandwidths and whatnot). If this is the first time you've ever encountered one, it's almost heartening it's taken this long for you to get pestered by them...

I don't think most people in the US want "universal health care." What the majority in the US wants is "low cost health care without having to pay premiums or my taxes going up."

Note even what you said - the supermajority wants a public option - I guarantee if that wasn't an option but was mandated then you'd get different poll results.

That's the thing with polls - you can usually word them in a way to get whatever result you want.  Polls suck.
I mean, you didn't say anything about a specific form of it. Explicitly mandated gov't controlled healthcare isn't necessary for universal healthcare sans crippling burdens. A public option would give universal healthcare to the US, or close enough to it to fix a shitton of our healthcare issues. A supermajority wants that. A supermajority of the US population wants universal healthcare, flat out.

Oh we can afford "universal health care."

Most people in the US just don't want it.

Well, more specifically, the prevailing US worldview is to feel like you are empowered to make their own choices about health care, rather than "having it dictated by the government," coupled with a desire to think that you're getting the most out of their money without feeling like your are paying for someone else.
I mean, this isn't even true. There's like supermajority support among the US population for a public option, near as I can remember and tell from checking. It's just the GOP is using it as red meat horseshit and actively sabotaging efforts to instate it.

Most of the people in the US want universal healthcare. There's just an asshole minority getting in the way of it, and it's not enough of a make or break issue for enough folks to railroad it over the jerks :-\

bump due to fred pissing on everything

It's raining, people. Flood alerts across most of the panhandle, flooding likely to follow the storm north, possibly as far as bloody new york. Been raining steady and mostly intensifying for the last six hours or so, where I'm at.

e: how do I still have power

... I don't visualize character appearance when reading basically at all, for what it's worth. If I stop and try I can sorta' recognize, like, yes they're talking about hair color or whatever*, but mostly it just isn't something my brain does. It's also something I see actually matter for a story only staggeringly rarely, which is probably part of it.

Understanding exactly how other people interpret things like visualization is difficult to begin with, though. I think I can visualize? I can translate a thought into a picture description or somethin'. I'm not, like, actually seeing anything, especially not anything even remotely as vivid as a dream, though.

*... probably not much anything else about them, though. Written characters might as well not have faces for me, heh.

We should have never been there in the first place. But I hate the back seat condemnation of US forces like this is somehow unique to us. NO ONE HAS EVER SUCCEEDED IN AFGHANISTAN. Not us. Not the Russians. Not the British.
No one except the Persians, Greeks, Kushans, Arabs, Mongols, Tamerlane and the Mughals, you mean, to crib someone else's notes :P

Don't really disagree with much of what else you said, but there's been plenty over the course of history that held on to the region in question without getting eaten in the process. There's also very few that have had their control of the place collapse quite so spectacularly as we have this round, from what I understand.

We definitely shouldn't have been there, though, and we extra definitely shouldn't have been propping up the kid raping sacks of shit we did while we were there, just as one "well, maybe that was a mistake" among a pile of them.

There were some serious, serious problems with the groups we were supporting in that country, and it's turned around to bite... well, not us, really, but all the folks we fucked over when we invaded to begin with, and all the folks about to get ruined now that the shit we were holding up is collapsing like the rotten house of cards we helped make it :-\

We legitimately did a garbage job. The folks we put/kept in power were fucking horrible, and the shit just kinda' rolled down hill from there. Part and parcel guerilla fighting doesn't see complete collapse like we've just seen in Afghanistan; this was a special breed of twenty year, two trillion dollar fuckup.

Press release by Biden on the current Afghanistan/Kabul situation. If nothing else, if that's actually held true to there's going to be something to note in him actually cashing the check his mouth wrote.

I was the fourth President to preside over an American troop presence in Afghanistan—two Republicans, two Democrats. I would not, and will not, pass this war onto a fifth.

... doesn't make the civilian population of Afghanistan less omnifucked, mind, but still. Bigger balls in under a year than the entire previous administration, for better or worse :-\

Not like it's near the worst the blighter's done, iirc, but still. Sudden illustrated noncon muscle yaoi was probably a bit of a surprise.

... in other wtfs, it's kinda' remarkable how bad the earlier john wayne parts are, both on his side and everything else. B-western is a remarkably apt description for that stuff, heh.

To bring us back on topic, evidently we're evaccing the embassy in Kabul as part of preparation to pull out of Afghanistan a bit more, or something?

The withdrawal of US and NATO troops is turning out to be a horrible mistake. 20 years of training and arming the Afghan army, only to have the Taliban mostly waltz all over them.

From what I've been picking up, we basically didn't do that, though. It was more like twenty years of sitting around with our collective thumbs up our asses doing nothing much useful after shitting on everything. Not so much a ball dropped as a ball jammed into a buster bunker and launched at the earth's core, with a chufty side serving of massive corruption and incompetence, a rare bit of the latter well meaning.

At least we're finally pulling our dick out the mousetrap we built, I guess. Sucks pretty hard(/even harder) for Afghanistan, though :-\

Except when it sorta' didn't, likely involving high speeds in odd directions and/or space shenanigans. Gravity probably lifted up the hearts of the dudes going to land on the moon, for a little bit!

The Right is committing borderline fraud, even if their victims are too deluded to realize it.
I mean, it's not borderline. You occasionally see actual lawsuits go through, there's just so much grifter shit out there it's basically background noise.

If you found out another species called humans something like meatsacks or beef, wouldn’t you consider that derogatory and/or threatening?
Long pork would probably be the equivalent, and it's something we call ourselves fairly often.

Probably would be fairly threatening, but on the other hand, most things in history that particularly able to back up that sort of threat we've eventually either domesticated or ate, so...

I mean, they both start and end at about the same spot in the alphabet. Easy mistake to make.
