General Discussion / Re: Hard questions that bother me today.
« on: August 04, 2012, 07:28:03 am »
The real answer to question number two is that the divine is aiming for the highest killcount it can manage, and realized it can get a much higher score if it sets up things so we just let vast populations die of apathy and/or neglect and/or exploitation before having everyone flip out and murder each other.

Altruism and sympathy is just a way to make sure the raw yearly dead number keeps growing. Need a higher base population to get the passive death count to rise, and those things keeps the short-term growth rolling in. Divine bastard's saving the serious coup counting for a ways down the line, after it's milked that fairly stable percentile as long as it can be milked.

I wonder will the rise of automatic sedans kill American public transport.
... America has public transport? This is news to Frumple. I knew some cities have a (somewhat shitty) facsimile of it, but the country as a whole is kinda' "bus what bus" for anything not involving K-12.

Anyway, here's hoping they get autocars worked out before I'm fifty-ish. It'd be nice to be able to get around a bit after my body starts deteriorating.

On one hand, I kinda' like this new matchup thing, with the accept and everything.

On the other hand, I have the sneaking suspicion some number of people have turned on matchmaking and then went to work or took a nap or something. Seems like it'd be a good way to kind of passively troll significant amounts of people without risking tribunal or exerting much effort :P

Somewhat mentally dead at the moment, so...

* Frumple offers generic statements of congratulations and OP thanks. Frumple thinks it's the sincerity that counts, even if the thought is weak.

I would have pointed and laughed, but then I checked and saw we're only getting low 90s (E: 36 is about mid nineties, for reference.) for the next week or so. It's surprisingly cool, honestly, for August in Florida.

Mostly because we've been having daily or thereabouts storms for the last while now, I think, and are forecast to continue to for a bit. After that, though...

Ah, definitely have tribalism before your raft(s) starts picking up those... island things. If they're in this game, and you actually need the tech before it'll gift you them. Game I'm running with small islands I got five, six tribes from those damn island-things. Got cities latched onto whatever landmass they're nearest simply because th'rafts can't carry more than one tribe >__<

Anyway. Vague waving toward "tribalism before picking up gift island-whatsits, if that's what we need to get free cities."

Nah, it'd be something like an arena-mode Sacrifice with more character stats, if they were going to try to do it worth a shit.

Also throwing in a veto for divine cult, at least for now. Iirc, and if the desc does what it says on the tin (and in the version I've got, anyway), divine cult freezes your culture boundaries, which sounds like an absolutely terrible thing to inflict on ourselves in the early game/expansion phase. Later... maybe. Maybe.

I'll give most TDs a chance (if not two) simply because I like the kind of hands off play it represents -- set up your whatever and have it go, see what happens, adjust or learn from it. Frankly, I'm fond of Dominions 3's battle system for very similar reasons, so the preference isn't genre locked. I like stuff that gets a lot of the twitch removed, really, which factors into it.

That said, most TDs are trash (even moreso than the standard signel to noise ratio when it comes to games/everything) and we still haven't substantially progressed beyond what was done in the starcraft/WC3 (especially the latter) days.

Now that... other one... is, well, strange for me. I bloody loved AoS (Aeon of Strife) maps back in the SC/WC3 custom map days. I still absolutely love the general concept and implementation inherent in what AoS represents. What I'm not nearly as fond of is the inspiration all these AoS knockoffs have been taking from DotA and its ilk. DotA was -- is -- a fairly solid map, especially from a technical/balance (comparatively, and relative to the number of moving parts it has) perspective. That, I wouldn't argue. What is also represents, to me, however, is a backslide in what AoS style games could be -- should be, arguably.

For me, it's in the name. AoS means Aeon of Strife. Warfare and conflict on an epic scale, armies clashing against each other as great figures walk the earth, directing and leading troops into battle and changing the very face of the land as they step. It represents RTS or -- in its best -- TBS scale battles being automated so that you may walk among it as a general or squad leader and change the weft and flow of battle with your bare hands and sheer grit; a departure -- and an excellent one -- from the omniscient armchair general position of your standard strategy game. It's all the scale and influence of a large theatre strategy game without shoving you up the arse of a bird.

This newer generation would be more accurately referred to as Afternoon of Scrimmages. It's a distillation of the potential of the AoS genre into a comparatively bland weekend day of sports games with shiny special effects. It's teamcomps and cs and item builds, not armies and massacres and giants amongst men. They tend to be fairly well done -- it's actually pretty hard to genuinely fuck up this sort of diluted AoS -- but they lack the sort of soul they could, should, have. Not bad, per se, and I still play and enjoy them, but they're always -- always, for some ungodly reason -- at core a disappointment. So much potential lost in the name of slavishly following the DotA formula.

And frankly moba just sounds terrible. Just plain unattractive as acronyms go. I'll stick to my AoS like I stick to my roguelike, thank you verra' much.

So, two fairly unrelated questions. Is there a way to filter enemy team chat? I haven't actually ran into any trash talk yet, but it'd be nice to go ahead and preemptively nix it :P I'll be checking the options sometime tomorrow, but if it's some kind of chat command, I might miss it.

Secondly, if an early game has gone poorly for your lane (say you're duo and both 0/4 by the 10-15 min range, something like that.), what's the proper response? "Stop feeding" is unfortunately terrible advice, heh. Is it best to try and switch lanes? Is it even a good idea for someone to swap into a fed lane? What if no one's willing? If you're playing someone that can half-ass it in the jungle, is switching into that role a better idea (assuming it's not taken or you can somehow convince them duo-jungle's a good/less bad idea.), or is trying (perhaps futilely) to keep th'enemy off your tower (mostly by hiding under it, heh) the more useful choice, even if it's likely to cause a few more feeds?

Basically, worse case scenario goes down, what's some good ways to mitigate the damage or at least slow down the snowball?

Just fired it up to see... no trouble. I am running the admin launcher, if that'd matter for whatever OS you're running.

Only french, male, not a witch, not green, and in possession of neither flying monkeys nor a large population of oppressed midgets. A small population, perhaps, but not a sizable one. Which is roughly to say utterly unlike the Wicked Witch of the West.

Can... can we get flying monkeys? And maybe hurry up with dyes and/or tattoos once we have boats? Then we can tattoo Charles green and everyone else blue, and be closer to what we're aiming for. Islander smurfs under the oppression of the Wicked Frenchman of Ambiguous Direction.

General Discussion / Re: Atheism/Theology Discussion

I've never seen faith defined as that. Unjustified or unjustifiable belief have been the primary definitions of faith that I've seen.

With that out of the system, maybe we can drop the semantics debate that's not going to go anywhere? Please? It gets threads locked.

Anyone have an opinion of panentheism? Spinoza was a pretty cool dude, iirc. Or any of the more interesting theological concepts you're aware of, really. Maybe try to steer discussion somewhere less vitriolic and more educational.

General Discussion / Re: American Election Megathread
« on: August 02, 2012, 02:21:28 pm »
Hey, if there's one thing the majority of the American voting population is united in, it's voting against their own interests.

Incidentally, I'm looking at the sample ballot (which is, so far as I remember, physically identical to the actual ballot) for my county (senate, congress, some local stuff) and I'm noticing... no space for write-ins. At all. Also precisely zero third party candidates. Particularly amusing is that both state attorney candidates are republican (for what it's worth, anyway). Bleh. Early voting's next week (Well, technically starts on Saturday, so it is going on through the weekend), then main voting day th'week after.

Probably spend the weekend figuring out who the hell these people are and which of them are least scum. Not looking forward to that, heh.

I'm now vaguely curious if there's ever been a case of a gynophobe suing one of those porn/virility drug (snail) mail spam companies for emotional distress or whatev'. Be a neat trick if they could pull it off.
