General Discussion / Re: What's the origin of your avatar?
« on: July 11, 2012, 01:28:40 am »
I'm enjoying looking back through this thread and seeing explanations that don't actually match the avatars anymore.
I was kinda' sad, if unsurprised, to see my two possible alternate avatars have poofed out. Easy enough to find again, but still...

... o'course, actually using them would be contingent on someone meeting the challenge, heh.

Ended up writing out some more on the natter I spat out in sad thead. Finished writing for the moment with this, which is happy in a reaffirming-of-purpose-once-more way. Impossible though it likely is, I would hold nothing better than to one day to reach the point where essence finally precedes existence.
Quote
My dream is for man to come to the end of all things, when the stars have burned out and all motion and potential for motion has ended, and for man to stand up at that point, say, "I Am the I Am, and though existence may end, I Am will not," and for that truth to write itself anew into the firmament of existence.

Hey, neat, got a seventeen. You can safely ignore that test, because socially well adjusted Frumple is not. Though that's at least partially motivated by the sort of folks that make up most of my area's population and a fairly major aversion to being around alcohol.

No joke, and it's been a bit of a stumbling block with trying to get into my major, but being around people who are drunk or while they're becoming drunk is incredibly unsettling to me. Y'have no goddamn idea, makes my entire neural schema start to flip out. Even tipsy is something I have trouble wanting to stay anywhere near. Same for any behavior effecting drug, as well as cognitive degeneration due to disease or age. It's like... just a little buzzed? "No," goes Frumple's mind, "Person, you have just fucking poisoned yourself and now I'm watching you lose cognitive capability and control, flat out the most fundamental aspect of what makes you, you. This is existential horror writ libation, and now, self, I am going to gibber and suggest you claw at the walls and escape."

Little tired, and now typing sideswipe has made me mildly melancholy. Anyway, standard warnings against self-diagnosis. It's fun, but don't put too much stock in it.

Never played perfect dark, eh? Pretty sure that was it, anyway. X-ray sniper rifle, shot through walls. Beautiful thing.

Dwarf head looks entirely too good on full-blown 3d models. We need more of these things, but for now? For now, this made me happy. Tomorrow, perhaps, we can see ones that move~

Yeah, watched the first couple of minutes. Immediate thought was "build deploying frames machine that picks up the reactors in the floor and moves them to opponent's ring, and then detonates."

I can already see a variant. Give them castles, instead, a distance apart, and make them build self-moving machines to go and destroy each other. Probably a longer build period, though.

I just... I just want to say, if they actually had a skin for ASCII dwarfhead, I would drop like a buck on that. I would give them a dollar to be able to use that. This coming from someone that basically hates SOE with a passion. You could get a dollar from me by having a fully functional in-game model with ASCII dwarfhead. Bonus points (an added dime) if they made it like a cube or something.

It is the best thing.

Kind if a belated chime in, but I'd throw out that 2d vs 3d in animation falls almost precisely where it does in video games. Remember well the PSX era and the insistence continuing to this day on making 3d games when 2d would be massively more aesthetically pleasing (handhelds, cough, cough) when dealing with the form's limitations. Not exactly surprisng, there, considering the connections between media forms,

If I had to wager a guess, I'd say that the techniques and the tools for working with 2d are currently simply more refined -- and more importantly, more prevalent -- than 3d, both in game and non-game media. In time, as 3d rendering and creation tools and methodologies advance, we're likely to see excellently done 3d animation become more ubiquitous. Well, moreso, as things have indeed kinda' been upswinging from what little I've paid attention.

Eventually, it likely won't be so much a better or worse than a different tool for difference desire thing. We'll likely see more mixed d media, I'd wager, as our content creators become more familiar and fluid with the more recent format.

Shaman. Lightning bolt. Double tap. Ow.

Forth level fighter not expecting squishy kobold to nail ass for 57 damage in one hit, aiee. Lived, though! Way too many close calls in the last few quests, heh...

E:Further curiosity, what's a "good enough" to-hit for a forth level melee character? M'currently +12/+10, if I'm reading the combat log right.

E2: Okay, yeah. Wait for two-weapon advice is... solid. Accidentally equipped a buckler for a while. Damage dealt went up, damage received went down. Face t'palm, yes, yes. Next goal is to give something doable another hard run and see if I can get a better shield than a +1 impact buckler. Probably butcher's path... first hard run on it netted me a +1 flaming burst dwaraxe. Seems like an upgrade from my +1 flaming/deception one, at least for this critter. Between that, a +1 true chaos, and a +3 plain, weapon choice seems alright for now. Also muckbane, which is just nice. Some silly person had it on the auction for like 200pp buyout :P

Anyway, off for the night. Interesting day, heh. Died... several times.

Second party went better!

... sorta. It was just some random joe cleric following me along the kobold den gnash tooth stuff, but things went pretty well until I did something that in retrospect was perhaps a little silly. Got to the prison place in the rescuing wozname quest that came right after, figured hopping down to the cell area was a good idea. Shortly thereafter, well. I made it. My hireling didn't. Cleric didn't either :P

Dude hopped out the quest at that point. Eh. Somewhat of a positive experience.

So, question. Chests and parties. No one losing anything, right? No first-come best serve stuff?

Guess so... I just hopped into a public one. Pick-up group, I guess you'd call it? Wasn't exactly a planned thing, and preparation was... well. Wasn't :P

Will have to try again eventually, preferably without the disconnect to see how it goes.

Ye' gods, the gods apparently don't want me partying. First try at it, irestone inlet on hard... about a minute and a half into it, both my hireling and myself are dead and lightning knocks out the internet long enough to cause me to disconnect. Zeus is apparently displeased by hobgoblin on dwarf gangbang.

E: In other news, Irestone tears me a new one. Any suggestions besides "Come back with better gear and/or at a higher level"?

offline mode still requires steam to connect to the net.
Civ 4 piracy: 10%
civ 5 piracy(after steam): 60% say they did.

questions?
Source? Relevancy? Civ 4 is not Civ 5, nor is that saying much about where the numbers are coming from, piracy rates among non-steam users, how steam is causing it, etc. It'd be interesting if steam actually was causing a piracy upswing (extreme doubts :P But anything's possible, to a degree), but we need a bit more to go off than that.

As for offline, i'unno. Most of the stuff I've got from steam can be launched without the steam process even running (Dreadmore, SPAZ, and Star Ruler, ferex), much less in offline mode. The rest have been pretty trivial to find alternate methods, so to speak, to run sans steam. It's probably more anal about bigger titles, but I haven't exactly been mainlining AAA titles the past decade or so, so eh.

Anyway, I haven't had much trouble with steam, m'self. Most everything fancy (pop-ups, run on start, etc.) is disabled and when I'm not doing something with it I just kill the process, like I do most things that might fight about such. S'better than retail, anyway :P

So... wait. Doublecheck this for me. The most XP efficient way to go about it is to do all the quests at X level on normal once, then swing through the gauntlet on hard and then elite? Or would you do it in multi-level swaths, i.e. at character level three, you do every quest from level one to, say, five, on normal, and the sweep through the lot of them on sequential difficulty levels? If you were trying to be silly, I mean :P

That doing one on normal resets the bravery thing does explain why I wasn't getting any of the buggers despite having chewed through all the first level quests on elite. Do you actually have to be grouped, or is solo fine? E: Wait, wait, wait. You have to actually go into the quest the first time on hard or elite? So grouping is requisite?

That said, I was hoping to farm a bit to get a better bodyfeeder weapon than that +0 scimitar. Checking the auction seems to suggest I'm not going to find bodyfeeder enchanted weapons until level six at the least, though. Sad. Though checking the wiki says maybe otherwise. Hrm... I think level four would be the minimum for a +1 bodyfeeder. Have to keep an eye out, anyway...

In other news, kobold assault. That is a fairly notable amount of kobolds. Normal wasn't too bad, at least for my two-weapon dude and a third level cleric hireling, just somewhat time consuming. I shudder to think about hard or elite, though... my saves aren't that high, and even on normal the shamans were getting through fears and suchlike. The kobold brothers quest had th'buggers nailing me with hold person and crap on elite (which I tried once, got one-shot by the flame trap :-\), which... is worrisome in relation to the kobold assault. So many shamans >_<

Anywaay. Dhoorm's up to level four, now, and I'm turning in for the morning. All the first level quests done to elite, starting to get the normal difficulty runs on the level two stuff. Thinking about ditching the sorcerer for something with lockpicking, though. Fighter keeps getting annoyed by not being able to unlock stuff and pass search checks, bleh. E2: Also, very much aware I've got like four pieces of equipment that aren't actually doing anything. I know how D&D stacking works, I just haven't managed to get usable stuff for some slots yet :P

Well. Third quest on hitting stormreach is redfang quest. First was standard kobold squish in sewer, second was kill little spiders without breaking stuff, cool. Short, sweet. Redfang...

Well, it wasn't particularly hard, at least on normal. Cleric hireling worth weight in gold and bodyfeeder enchant is totes great for staving off attrition.  But. I have two observations.

One. People in this eberon joint take home security really goddamn serious. Nevermind dude's basement was arguably larger than the town I live in, no. Ignore that. Joint was trapped to hell. It had never-ending flamethrowers. Spider eggs are a pita, too. But. Yeah. Traps. Everywhere. And magical locks and crap and portcullis everywhere and... it got a little absurd.

Two, re: breakables. I can totally empathize with not wanting to deal with those damn things after this quest. One, they're freaking everywhere. There had to be a good hundred, hunnard fiddy in that place. Two, two. The game makes you damn well work for some of them. I saw at least four barrels bathed in unending fire from flamethrower traps that never let up. There was another dozen or so in a room with poison jet traps going off constantly. Others were surrounded by spike traps jamming up and down like they had an epileptic noble humping the control level. Still more might have well been hanging from the ceiling, you had to climb so much to reach the bloody things. It... it was ridiculous.

But yeah, maybe grouping, i'unno. Got rest of night and chunk of tomorrow to play before I'm back to intermittent access. Currently slogging around as Dhoorm. E: Incidentally, any suggestions on good place to farm a little for loot? I'd love to hunt up an axe with bodyfeeder on it, particularly if it's enchanted.
