Bleh. Most people just in too much of hurry. Going faster than any land bound creature alive for longer periods than any can sustain isn't sufficient. Must go even faster, because,

... not really sure what the because is, other than because. You don't save much time going 5-10 over speed limit (and the amount you save relatively becomes progressively smaller as you go faster), unless it's really low (20s, etc). Don't save much gas. Still moving faster and more comfortably than anything else on planet. But, no. Must go 5-10 over speed limit. Doesn't matter what speed limit is. 5-10 over, always, for almost everyone.

Frumple just doesn't understand. Go speed limit, maybe leave two-three minutes earlier at most. Get there at same time or near enough it doesn't matter. Don't break law in process. Why go faster when it doesn't make particular difference and is somewhat less safe? If in hurry, already late. Not point rushing then. Late is binary, more late still late.

Is side to most of that, but part of it for me, at least, is a sort of respect... m'grandfather did a lot of the road work in my area. I respect the expertise that went into that... if he and his fellows say "go 55", I say, "Okay. You're better at this than me, so I yield to wisdom."

'Course, I also know that almost all roads are capable of safely being traveled a good 20-30 over the posted limit -- they're built that way, at least most of the time -- but that's not the point. Point to me is that 'people I trust (in a roundabout way) says this is the safe speed' mixed with 'I'm not losing any meaningful amount of time not going faster'. Throw in a "it's more dangerous to be going faster" and it's just a no-brainer to me. Go speed limit, or slower. Only reason I don't just cruise at 10 under is because it causes vehicles to start building up and impatient assholes to start doing stupid-stupid shit like passing three cars in one go.

Now, one thing I will do (and have done) is pull right the fuck over if there's a crapton of tailgating whoresons piling up behind my law abiding ass. Just let th'bastards pass, I say. I'm not in a hurry, ever.

I... can you, like, hand parts of the bundle back out? I'd be interested in throwing in for avernum, but the rest aren't really to my taste. If it's possible, put me in then give everything but the trilogy to whoever comes last :P

If y'can't, m'not interested in joining, but a customary round of applause for giving this a go, Zeb. I mean, round of applause if you can, too, yes.

Unless you wear a ponytail or twintails. Then it's just awesome with no drawbacks.
Actually, I've found that people love grabbing it and trying to break your neck.
That's when you loop it around their neck and give wee little yank. Favor returned!

Ponytails are great. Tie, blindfold, whip, and garrote, all in one silky length.

E: Wait, what's all this doing in a 'net censorship thead?

Yeah... the more interesting thing to me is gene-engineered... what's that word... tailored? Something like that, it shows up in sci-fi occasionally. Species. Not bring humans down, but taking something else up. Making a non-sentient or barely sentient labor species, or a number of ones built for specific tasks. There'd be no functional difference between a human->labor and non-human->labor, but the direction it came from would change.

It seems a more interesting moral question because people tend to get jittery about specific-task bio-organisms despite it being an exact parallel to constructing custom-task machines. You're just using a somewhat messier construction method... but somehow that tends to be enough, at least for maco-scale entities. We already do exactly that with smaller scale ones, to a limited degree.

Basically, the question is why does it matter if a thing is made from flesh or steel if they do the same thing and are built more or less the same way? If it doesn't come from humans, what's so bad about a

... wouldn't that make robotics equally as terrible in this future world if we had the capability to create sentient AI? The only meaningful difference between a gene-engineered slave race (better termed something along the lines of bio-robots) and robots is construction material.
I think this could use a new thread, actually. It's an enormous moral issue - to put it in perspective, abortion is a subset of "What is it permissible for a creator to do with a creation?"
It was more the "smart enough to do job, not smart enough to 'want more'" thing than that sort of creator ethics. If the issue comes from creating things that are less intelligent than you could make them, future!world would have to be making sentient toasters in order to maintain a moral stance.

Unless, of course, you discriminate based on physical makeup... don't get the same consideration because you're not fleshy, essentially. If you build a slave race from the ground up (or uplift a non sentient), flesh vs. metal would be th'only meaningful difference between that and a robot. "Just intelligent enough" doesn't necessarily mean stupid humans, after all. Smarter apes or some custom built critter would seem more likely, likely specifically to avoid that moral issue.

In other words, do we have a moral imperative to uplift (make sentient, etc.) working animals (dogs, horses, so forth) and machines if we have the capability to do so? And if we don't, then... why?

New thread'd probably be a good idea, though, if discourse would continue. Derail is derail :P

If the wiki's accurate, tactics is +5% withdrawl chance, +15% defensive strength. Which isn't terrible, but deathtouched would be pretty sexy (skeletons skeletons everywhere).

M'still not entirely sure if Agnostic is a good or bad thing, m'self. In MoM, at least, the religions can be pretty useful. I'm just not really sure what the downside to a hostile religion sinking into yer land is, and if giving up the upsides to having your own is worth that.

But yeah, go Ophelia.

After giving them lessons and a test and ensuring that they stick to rigorous laws to prevent those boxes from killing people.  And making sure we take the right to drive those boxes away if they do stupid things with them.
Just a test. Lessons aren't actually required, at least in my state, just the ability to pass the drivers test. Again, they gave me a license. When I passed the test, it was probably the third time I had been behind a wheel, and I'd never had formal lessons... nor any particular notable informal ones beyond watching other people drive. Despite this, I passed, and they sent me on my way.

And yeah, actual enforcement of road law is incredibly spotty. You have to be doing something particular egregious or have a cop cruising for tickets to actually have someone come down on you for breaking them, and there's a number of laws that get broken almost universally (speed limit being broke and turn signals not being used are particularly common. The former especially... it's easier to count the people going the speed limit than the people going over.). Then there's just the horrendously stupid things, like tailgating and suchlike. Would totally vote for a law saying that all tailgaters get beat for ten minutes or so with a bat with "Inertia" engraved in it. But I digress...

Though yeah, you can get the license probated or taken if you get caught doing the wrong thing often enough.

Ehn... problem with A is sometimes the latter two don't get noticed or documented, and it'd be difficult to filter for those, when they're two of the stronger indicators of potential problem. M'own experience is that, at least in my state, things are a bit more lax than m'terribly comfortable with. Mind you, Florida doesn't have a gun license (just a concealed carry), but yeah.

Problem with B is quality of the course, and regular (biannual?) re-qualification. Honestly, some kind of unscheduled test might be ideal... firearm safety is something I'd want people to know, not just temp. memorize to pass a test and then forget.

Those two would be the ideal, though, if it could be done... well, better would be nice :-\

Drivers licenses could probably stand some tighter quality control too -- gods know I shouldn't have been given one... I had maybe an hour behind the wheel, total (was maybe my fourth or fifth, if that, time behind the wheel), and no formal safety training when I passed the driver's test -- but there's much bigger pressure to use vehicles than firearms. S'bit trickier, there.

I... I hope not. Absurd societal motives and oppressive stratification isn't something I'd be aiming for, m'self.

25377
Totes watching. Voted for scions, 'cause I keep failing horribly at them in master of mana and figure some of the strats might carry over, so seeing someone more capable play should be neat.

Guess I should nab RifE at some point, see how it compares to MoM...

Top... top three? Well. Crap. Uh, if I had to choose...

Well. Tie them all for first, I guess. ToME4, Incursion, and Vapors of Insanity. The first two for love, and the third for love of its potential and some of the crazy antics you can already get up to.

Then there's a list a couple several dozen long coming in, like, second. Including all the ones already mentioned in the thread, except Nethack and Angband (though I love me some *band variants). Which I acknowledge for what they are in the roguesphere, but am not very fond of personally.

Dwarf Fortress being in there is implicit to posting on this forum :P

I'd say "confirmed finding the flesh of God" is pretty damn sufficiently sexy, regardless as to its practical applications. Still, definitely let's poke it with a stick to see if it jumps.
