General Discussion / Re: Is America being "conservative" good?
« on: June 21, 2012, 01:39:17 am »
That isn't the case in American politics. The social conservatives are the same people who claim to be fiscal conservatives.

Again, that's a blanket judgment. Have you met everyone who claims to be conservative in America? I'm fairly certain not everyone is Bill O'Reilly or Rush Limbaugh.
I think Nad's talking more specifically about conservative politicians -- and especially the ones in higher office (state governors, house, senate, etc.). Insofar as I've paid attention, they've got a pretty strong record of voting partisan over whatever their primary conservative principle is... and considering the republican party hasn't done the sane (well, in some ways) thing and split along social and fiscal lines, well...

As I understand it, the reps have actually been losing some folks over that, though American political system being what it is, there's no telling how much an effect that'll have (if any), or how soon the impact shows up. E: To emphasize this point, it should be carefully considered that conservative voters, conservative demagogues, and conservative politicians can at times be considered as three entirely separate groups, sometimes with radically different principles.

Anyway, in a sense, Nad has "met" all the conservative politicians -- their (political) actions (i.e. voting record) are public record. You don't really need 100% accuracy when using a handle like conservative or republican, just a majority accuracy. Outliers are outliers, et al.

Ninja'd twice in the typing of one post. I surrender :-\

Being perfectly fair, the "liberal" politicians aren't exactly better, they're just not burdened with the whole blatantly bigoted (among other things) social policy thing.

Wait, animal sacrifice is seriously legal in this country?
Why wouldn't it be? Animal cruelty probably wouldn't pass considering stuff like kosher slaughter... or just the state of the meat industry in general, heh. Ninja'd a bit, yeh.

I... actually have this game. Would love to play, but...

... I've owned the game since Janurary. Have yet to get access to a computer capable of running it. Effing video cards. Mumblemutter.

Yeah... my problem with the cleanliness rubric is that better than half the time, I still end up making less of a mess going fingers than anyone else involved going silverware. This is pretty much regardless as to what the food actually is. Can involve a great deal of finger licking to get through the whole thing, but still...

Which isn't to say everyone else around has no manners, or something silly like that. I'm just a borderline impeccable food consumer, regardless as to method of consumption. It's actually kind if uncanny, sometimes. I think it's mostly because I've ate hungry enough that consuming absolutely everything involved in the meal is habitual -- food not in belly is food not in belly. Cleanliness means you ate everything.

Though I'm totally with you on the eating/drinking after other people thing, Pnx. I don't mind reconsuming my germs, but everyone else's can stay the hell away. And yeah, compulsive digit hygiene before and after consumption becomes habitual.

The hell are you talking about? All food is finger food.
Absolute truth.

Soup, well, the bowl is your eating utensil.

Will agree the subject thing was out of line, and would say bread or something would have been better than fingers for getting up juices, but... finger licking good? Finger licking good. It's a compliment to the chef (or a sign of hunger and/or rather notable anti-waste tendancies *waves*)!

I do tend to tone it back in public, though. At home? Brethren, I lick the bloody plate clean regularly. Paid for that food and by god damn I will eat it. All of it. Speaking of which, I have some leftover barbecue sauce to take care of. Just finished eating!

Ol' Tzu's babblings apply well enough to pretty close to everything. Strategy is strategy, generally regardless of the scenario it's being applied to. Gotta' love Tzusy.

I still have to admire the Vanu, because their motivation is For Science!
No, their motivation is 'Kiss the ass of the alien overlords!' and they do what they're told. NC is for corperate profit disguised as free humanity.
FTFY.

If I'm going to be kissing something anyway, I'd rather go for alien overlord ass than government jackboot or megacorp schlong.

And a number of in-game screenshots (some pretty busy) and some limited footage. Then there's those gifs of the shield based combat, which is presumably cribbed from in game, and some other stuff.

As for the hype, well...

It’s expected to be released towards the end of Summer 2012, but we’re willing to take the extra time to get things JUST right.

Time wise, it's interesting. From what I remember (perhaps entirely wrongly!), they inherited/bought some or all of the Terraria engine code, so the project wasn't starting entirely from scratch... the in-game stuff seems to reflect that -- looks a fair amount like a more polished Terraria. Though how much under the hood has changed, who knows, heh. Anyway, if the group is working off a previously (fairly) stable code base, potential time investment necessary to get things up and running may be drastically reduced.

That said, if there's any rule of coding that approaches 100% accurate, it's that all initial deadlines underestimate the amount of time that's actually needed. Still... before the end of the year? Maybe. Maybe. They've got more than one coder, iirc, and Terraria managed to get (perhaps prematurely, all things considered) released in, what, a six, seven month period (which is goddamn blisteringly fast for game development of any major size)? We could see something similar. We're probably going to have an ETA update within a month or two, though. Eyes open!

In before Janet,
smacks you lot off the planet.

Figured two lines weren't enough.
Therefore, I end with "Wigglytuff."

If theres no point to having a birdman excpet for a different look, why give the birdman wings. You'll end up with a lot of comments complaining the birdman with wings can't fly instead of anything helpful.
The... the birdmen don't have wings. They've got wing-shaped jetpacks, though! Presumably they'll be species-specific tech, though wether that means they only have an easier time getting it or something else, well... we don't know yet. There's plenty that can be done with unique species without actually having any statistical changes (faction/npc relations, easier tech access to certain things, etc., so forth.).

T'the lot of yeh, we just know jack-all about implementation right now. We've got some aesthetics and some interesting-enough lore. Das ist all. Unless there's more news?

Anyway. Eta for beta-thing is still mid-late summerish, right? Has there been any retractions on that?

Roughly half (+/- 25%) of southern cooking can be summed up as "Deep fry everything." Pickles are no exception.

Since this thread is about Cartoons/Western animation, anyone ever remember ExoSquad? I didn't watch it during its original run, but I managed to watch the series in its entirety recently.

It's.. pretty good. Considering it was a show about mecha in a pretty merchandise obsessed era, the series' plots tend to tackle heavy themes, like wartime death and loss, the ethics of bioengineering, etcetera. Certainly interesting.
Anyway, Exosquad? Exosquad. I seriously need to actually go and watch through that at some point. Saw a good chunk when I was younger, but remember basically none of it. Still have a toy suit laying around somewhere in mostly one piece.
I remember, heh. One day, I'll watch through it, yesyesyes.

I can understand the urge for hardcopies, sorta', but this situation...

It's... look. I'm dealing with roughly a decade worth of files. School files. That were managed by about three or four different people, and went through a number of format changes. There are about four different "standard" folders in these goddamned cabinets, some of them possibly older than the cabinet they're in.

I... I just want, y'know. Them all the same format, and nice flat folders with nice printouts of the relevant information and naught else. Some of these folders are thicker than my wrist. And maybe an easy way to check and see where a folder's supposed to be... y'know, if we actually have one. Stuff like that. I can stand some paper imprint, I just want the ease of use that comes from a bloody database and a laser printer.

Today's secondary and related rage: Digging through files. Finding place file is supposed to be. No file!
 (╯°Д°)╯︵ ┻━┻ *wookie screams*

Yeah. Technically, there's still a filing cabinet in another building that probably has more files in it. The cabinet is locked. No one knows where the key is. Whee! Narglefargleendyourchildrenwarble.

Minor funny, though. There's supposed to be a folder for me somewhere in this mess. Guess what's not there! Ahahaha!

25513
Today, I spent... seven, seven in a half hours, straight, organizing and filing student folders. From this experience, I have learned one major thing.

The first thing I will ever do in any situation where a large amount of file keeping is required, is digitize goddamn everything. If anyone tries to stop me, I will break their limbs sequentially until they capitulate spend an inordinate amount of time (and possibly bribe them) convincing them it's a good idea. There is no excuse for this shit in 2012.

25514
Me, I'm currently wondering if they'll be something like a "magnetic boot" cert that makes it easier to stand on top of vehicles. I have visions of a small group of snipers camping out on top of a scythe or something, raining death from literally over the horizon. Mobile high ground that can take potshots at things, too.

Group of anti-tank guys surfing around on something highflying and dropping rockets or whatev' would also be awesome.

And I want some sort of weapon that bounces/ricochets. I want my fooking Infantry-style plasma cannon, but will settle for bouncy grenade launchers or somethin'.

I've got a few I use for different purposes (usually more game related than forum, though) and a couple backups if someone's nabbed one of those, plus a few "standard throwaways" (Noon Yah, ferex) for transient junk. I've been using variations on Frumple for a while now (since around the time Diablo 1 came out), though, and I'm quite fond of it.

Been using Jack Thejil (Jack the Jill, natch) more often semi-recently... compulsively naming my ToME4 characters Jack <something*> is a habit that's been bleeding over to other things, heh.

*Such illuminated creatures as Jack Dwarfhumper and Jack Rotcrotch, ferex. One-legged Jack, too -- that one's actually mentioned in the cemetery :P
