Maple leaf rag~

Really, I keep forgetting that regular music listening is a positive sign for my general mood and then going for a few weeks without. Gotta' stop doing that, music's the closest I get to religious experiences without major depressive breakdowns. It's a good thing.

One the other hand, a limitation of two gigs on hand is kinda' stifling. Need to get around to figuring out how to extract my main stash from the effectively dead laptop.

E: Bit later, the Entertainer. Good ragtime is cheering.

Just found out this PoS browser apparently can't reveal tvtrope spoilers. Had a minor rage spasm.

For the record. iPad safari browser is a royal piece of junk. Everything that hasn't looked worse so far (that I've seen, anyway) costs, though :-\

Let them take the taller role? Or just roll with it. I don't actually know enough about tango to know why a woman partner being taller is a bad thing, heh.

In reality it's unlikely the natives would've been seen as "people." You don't get taken to a war crimes tribunal for bulldozing some rabbit holes.
Except rabbits don't use tools, cannot communicate in our language, do not have a culture or religion, and perhaps most importantly of all, do not look vaguely human. Just look at how people tend to treat our fellow primates (gorillas especially) with more respect and care than other animals.
*coughbushmeatcough* Though we might be getting a bit bickery, here. Maybe a dedicated thread for gaming scenarios re: primitive alien species encountered in exploration/exploitation/expansion efforts?

Then again... Soylant blue?

Why are you talking about tungsten light poles? o_o...

What's so special about them?
Dense, mostly. Iirc, one of those things dropped from orbit would hit harder than most nukes we've got, without the nasty radiation stuff. Plus it's not really stoppable. One of the theoretical methods of an easy to deploy kinetic kill vehicle.

Nin'd!

Man, if I was expecting hostile natives, I'd have an entire cargo hauler dedicated to tungsten light poles, because nothing says, "Mine now." like the functional equivalent of the fist of an angry god.

Re: military tactics on Pandora, I present for your consideration:

1) Tungsten light pole from orbit.
2) Tungsten light pole from orbit.
3) Tungsten light pole from orbit.
4) Unmanned drones.
Kinetic kill is one of the better kills :P

Found knife (been missing for a good month or so, before), headphones, mp3 player, and triple A battery. Happiness quotient now no longer as far below zero as it was, yaay~

Will become slightly less negative when I stop needing my ears for the night. Decent afternoon, huzzah.

Starship Troopers!

trolololo?
Trolololo indeed. If it had been closer to the books, wouldn't have been quite as badly of a mockery in that area. Book wasn't quite perfect in that arena either, but it was pretty old, so that's a bit forgivable. Was still fairly decent as that stuff goes.

And yeah, the written word as a much better track record as such things go.

Say what you will, I thought the final battles in Avatar were awesome. All that military hardware and gorgeous CGI. Especially since the blue dudes were getting the stuffing kicked out of them.
It was... pretty terrible. Today, we would have leveled that place from over the horizon, or at least from the upper atmosphere. In a reality where they've got interstellar travel? There's no excuse for 90% of the shit they pulled in that movie.

Don't get me started on the arrow through the faceplate bullshit. Or the mechs in general. Candidate for worst exosuit ever.

The movie was very pretty but joy-drainingly stupid :-\

Bright side, I have bolo book in room. I can read that for happier future war thoughts, maybe. Bolos are pretty great.

Are... are there any movies out there that actually does a good job of reasonable scifi warfare?

General Discussion / Re: How do you feel about misandry?

I feel what you're saying kaij, but part of the thing is a fair amount of the folks hemhawin' about men's rights seem to actually equate the severity of circumcision and female genital mutilation, which...

Well, which, really. I don't really know how to express it. It's a thing which lacks words but may be properly expressed with casual violence upon the expresser, I guess. Some stupid can only be responded to adequately (though doubtfully effectively) thusly.

Then there's castration, yes, but it's not exactly a systematic or widespread thing, unlike the whole female genital mutilation issue.

You did, but Frumple has seen it. The song is great.

General Discussion / Re: Recommend a new computer?
« on: May 11, 2012, 05:31:09 pm »
I'll admit to curiosity -- what kind of labor cost are you looking at nowadays to have a computer built? Cost beyond hardware and all that.

I've been eyeballing this (and it sorta' goes as a suggestion for OP -- it seems decent for the cost, and reviews on newegg are acceptable. Might need an HD upgrade or some externals, though, depending on how copious copious is.) for a bit now as a sort of bargain decent-ish machine, but my constant question is "could I get someone to build a better machine for less?" It'd be an easier question to answer if I had a better idea of what current prices are like, heh.

Some day someone's going to have to explain how that scenario even works, especially on a military level. If the entire Muslim population was hostile to America, our only strategic choices would be surrender or suicide. Roughly a third of the world's population is Muslim -- America has neither the force projection nor resource base to be able to do anything against that. It's just not physically possible.

Capitulation would be literally the only viable military solution available, and it's just not possible to game out a better resolution -- anything else, when put up against a genuinely united worldwide Mulsim population, would end with either destruction or occupation. The numbers are too disparate, and even if you could kill off a sufficient amount to cripple the theoretical Muslim military capability, the economic shocks from losing that much population would absolutely cripple the US -- and everywhere else, of course. Nuclear response would result in the exact same thing -- even if the US went absolutely isolationist, the repercussions from losing that much worldwide population in the sort of timeframe such an act entails would necessarily entail we'd lose most of our own population to economic shock (never mind any retaliation from non Muslim countries for the horrific war crime that would necessarily entail.).

More worrisome than just about any damn thing to me is that we've got military strategists -- even shit poor ones -- that are even considering such a thing as a possibility. It's a theoretical assumption that goes beyond even staggering stupidity into something I can't think of the words to properly describe.
