Any of the rogue metaclass members are horrifying damage machines once they get off the ground, but they're pretty fragile and hard to get off the ground. Also tend to have surprisingly meh escape options. Nothing like 'zerkers that just faceroll pretty much the whole game, as a comparison. Rogue metaclass survivability does skyrocket if they can survive to get a decent steel or d-steel level set of daggers, though, and find a decent way of not dying.

A high level shadowblade is particularly hilarious -- EoS + momentum is just great.

Mage apprentice specifically has to be an arcane powered artifact -- just bump into the guy and it should give you the option to hand stuff over. The quest info's not been updated to reflect the change yet, iirc, though the initial dialogue has been.

As for the slavers, if you killed the boss critter on that level, the orb won't work. Otherwise, try talking to the critter first, maybe.

Even with that, you generally don't want to be swapping weapons in mid melee; the long blade would probably be more for stuff that already woke up (and that you couldn't disable) before you got to it. If you're using the lesser stab (i.e. on confused/petrified/etc. critters, while invisible, so forth.) you'll probably still be doing more damage with a short blade on average, so there wouldn't really be a reason to swap.

Probably wouldn't be much of an issue, so long as you're careful about when you swap out. It might mean spread out weapon XP, though. Maybe not too big of a deal -- you don't have to invest much into short blades to hit min speed.

General Discussion / Re: Analytic Thinking can Undermine Belief
« on: April 28, 2012, 08:10:38 pm »
Quibble: thread title should probably be renamed to specify religious belief. Just belief is a fair bit more generalized and doesn't seem to be being measured by the tests in question. There's... actually some annoying conflation of that terminology in the quoted text :-\ General belief is a much larger topic, though, so some focus is understandable.

Wouldn't be terribly surprised if a more generalized test held out about the same response though; a strong component of analytic thought is specifically about challenging and breaking apart beliefs (regardless of the belief's metaphysical burdens).

Echoing that the text trick is a nice one, though. Wonder if that's why a fair amount of philosophy texts are a bit poorly formatted, heh.

... did it work?

Bah, to red hell with your negativity. It sounds like something I wouldn't mind utilizing at all, if I were aware of it, and definitely something a lot of areas would seriously benefit from. Plenty of people appreciate stuff like that, they just tend to be quieter and less memorable than the noisey jackasses.

I'd probably recommend checking the wiki and/or knowledge bot on stabbing mechanics -- unless something major got changed while I wasn't looking, the thing about daggers and stabbing is that daggers are more appealing when you've got a lower stabbing skill, as the raw damage boost from stabbing with a dagger caps off, while the multiplier is a short blades in general thing, not specific to a dagger. When you hit the point with stabbing (iirc, mid-upper teens or low twenties) that other short blades are capping off with that bonus damage, daggers become pretty much useless. Possibly even earlier, because the base damage in daggers is crap. Long blades, however, have a lower multiplier, so they're probably going to do less stab damage regardless.

There's a possibility you'll still be doing more damage with a sufficiently sexy long blade (because, outside the attack speed and aforementioned damage boost, daggers are shit), but you'd probably be better off with a sabre or (if particularly lucky, you're a bit early for them) quickblade.

Basically, the higher your stabbing gets, the less attractive daggers are, but short blades are going to more-or-less trump long blades regardless (for stabbing damage, anyway). Still, though, the stabbing multiplier is a stabbing multiplier. It's always going to help, it just takes short blades to make somewhat silly.

Wyrmic's getting a pretty huge buff in b39, actually :P

Same way antimagic is -- fungus tree access. Even post nerf, fungus tree is pretty major. It's... basically aegis for regeneration. Or, to put it another way, its fist talent (post-nerf) boosts the heal from regen infusions by a flat out 100% at 5/5.

Corrupted metaclasses are getting a new tree too, but it's more of a boon for corrupters than reavers; the torment tree is also considerably less game changing than fungus. Biggest boon from it is a vim pool increase, though there's some neat stuff in it.

That said, while I've unlocked almost all the classes legitimately (I haven't got around to unlocking paradox magi yet, hum, though I've been through the rift a couple times with TWs), I unlocked them a lot earlier than that by editing

An action I wholeheartedly recommend for everyone, and not so subtly mention just about every time an unlock comes up. I vehemently hate the unlock system :P

T4's good enough I can happily edit my way around it and move on with enjoying the game, heh.

Movement infusion (or preferably two) is generally a lot more reliable for getting out of an advn. party ambush. Just sayin', heh.

Which does screw undead a bit, of course.

As for antimagic, it's a bit better than it used to be, providing you're a willpower primary class. AM shield makes you ridiculously tanky vs nonphysical damage (especially with some resistances backing it up) and the aura can do a pretty good job of shutting casters down, especially in close quarters (i.e. an ambush map). Plus some of the coming AM egos are intensely sexy. Then there's the fungus tree, which is still pretty hilarious after I helped talk DG into nerfing wild growth. You're still gimping yourself a bit taking AM, but it's not quite as shitty as it was, and will be a bit better still in b39.

Re: easy classes, you can add mindslayer to that list (providing you can unlock the bastards, heh. As always, I recommend the easy method, i.e. a text editor), and probably necromancer (ditto the unlock condition). TWs are still fairly ridiculous (ly kite-y), but they have been sequentially toned down for a few versions. Anowhatsits are pretty vicious, too, but the resource management for them is a bit tiresome.

It requires knowledge of a game mechanic peculiar to Ryze - his abilities do more damage the more mana he has, so he can increase his damage output without buying ability power (AP) items. Every other mage will tend to build AP, so he's a bit of an oddball. Playing LoL at level 30 (so you can participate in the tribunal) and not knowing about this is a faux pas equivalent to being sat at the captain's table, complaining that your gazpacho soup is cold.
Yeah, figured it was something like that. I've played maybe ten LoL games so far, mostly co-op dominion (because it takes like half or less the amount of time to play), so I'm not exactly familiar with all the quirks :P

I guess it's possible the reporting critter was borrowing (or bought or some such nonsense) a L30, but it's a bit silly of a thing for someone who actually played their way to that point to miss, heh.

If you don't have much unlocked, give alchemists a whirl; probably a dwarf one. Max out the bomb tree (except shockwave, which is crap), invest a little in golem stuff (at the very least a point or two in resilience and eventually supercharge), bomb everything straight to blazes, channelling staff while your bomb cools down. Max out magic, then con, then will -- the dex suggestion for the class is an outright lie, as explosion expert will eventually get you all the range you need (though do max out alchemist protection before investing in e.expert.). Give the t4 forum (and this thread!) a search and/or browse for more suggestions -- I'd be a bit expansive, but it's an utter bitch to type on an ipad.

You can pretty much coast until level 25-30 on that, without much more consideration.

Also don't be afraid to ask questions and junk in the in-game chat. It's usually pretty friendly, or has been when I was on. Give the t4 forum a look over, too, especially character reports. You can get some good ideas and advice around there.

I wish I could parse that picture, because it looks like it's supposed to be hilarious. I wish I had regular access to a computer capable of playing LoL, heh.

Know of any running that both has a chance of taking a seat and isn't a horrifying ambomination on par with or worse than the major two? It's a fairly serious question, because I basically never hear anything about any of them.

I'm a bit politically isolated, but the dem/rep folks I at least hear the name of in passing occasionally :-\
