General Discussion / Re: Things that made you sad today thread.

Not news to me, but I'm a person that's personally beaten Nethack 3 times with no save backups. It's something of a point of pride to not use savestates, though I may have to concede this point given my frustration.
Yeah, I'm a roguelike player too and I've done my share of no-save-scum victories (Though I'm not particularly fond of Nethack so meh). I tend to be more direct when I feel like cheating :P But plenty enough legit victories nowadays so yeaah.

Biggest thing for me with FE, even without abusing save states for seriously hardcore RNG finagling, is time. You can drop a savestate at the start of a fight or whatever and if things go south and you'd, in the same situation, go back and restart and reload and alll that craaap you can just hit F1 or whatever and bam instant reload. You just saved like three minutes or more, per reload instance.

And like a full set of ten-twelve (or more) saves at varying points? Just golden. No more losing hours of effort because it's a freaking PitA to save after every battle because menus and saving time and limited save slots bullshit on parade. Shift-1 done -- moving on! So much more efficient. So much time and effort saved. You don't even have to use it to game the system, just use it to save oodles and heaps of time.

E:Also fastforward button. Blessing of the gods, that. Shaves off even more time investment without mucking about with anything else.

Okay, opinion gathering! For a heavy armor MiFi of Ash, which would be the better idea?

Z - the cursed +2 chain mail of Exclusion (worn) {rElec Int+1 Dam+6 SInv}

or

A +4 Gold Dragon Armor? (Specifically, a gold dragon hide and five enchant armor scrolls)

I've never actually gotten a melee-prime character into the early end game, so...

Fire Emblem Rage
My best advice young grasshopper: Save States. Seriously. Don't play FE on the actual gaming system it's designed for. Bugger that noise. Buy the game. Use an emulator. RNG can bite my save-anywhere, anytime arse.

Of course, that also translates to "Don't play the gamecube and Wii ones" but whatev'.

Spoiler: This (click to show/hide)
Mass flight + undead horde vs 10k+ gold worth of lizards = hilarity.

I'm not the one (or even remotely related to, it came from an SA -- which I don't have an account for -- game) that did it, but I cracked up. I can only image the look on C'tis's player when they opened that battle report ♥

Isn't Abyssal rune pretty much guaranteed to appear if you just walk circles there for 20k or so turns?
Yeah... something like that. Problem being that the abyss is a frakking pain in the arse to walk around in circles in. All that shifting around BS is just violently annoying :-\

Could suck it up and go run around some more but... ugh. Piles of annoyance in exchange for a rune isn't terribly appealing.

Just had my most pathetic death. Started game. Room has no exits.

Desperately search for exits.

Die of starvation.

 :-\
*point, laugh*

That is pretty terrible. Should have been some exits somewhere... or stairs down. Or something. Why didn't you just go back up the stairs before you starved?

Okay, so yeah.
I've got resistance holes everywhere but it apparently doesn't matter half the time when everything dies in like four turns at most but whateeevveerrr. Definitely the next time I do ash I remember to go with long swords or axes, so can curse without starving.

But okay. Anyone know how to get into
Spoiler: this thing? (click to show/hide)
Also, suggestions for third/last rune? I don't really want to do Shoals but Abyss has been a bitch and hasn't coughed up a rune despite being in there like five times and crap.

There's a bit of a plot to GH1, but it's fairly ignorable.

There's an overarching plot to GH2, but it's almost entirely randomized and somewhat... disconnected, because of it. It can make for some very strange theater.

Both are generally quite stable, and GH2 has a bit of player-sanity stuff added (Consolidated skills, ferex.), but GH2 is a bit more difficult (at least in a technical sense, since in GH1 you can't really die, but you can in GH2). GH1's also a bit less balanced re: combat, so it's a bit easier to make an uberbeastofdoom and rampage around. GH2's got a lot more features, though.

GH2's also somewhat more annoying to navigate, since there's not... well, sorta not... a world map; you spend most of your time in "spinners" (space colonies) and movement between those are generally through bus-type services. You can technically fly yourself around, but... wouldn't suggest it. GH1 has a world map, easy to get around.

... that being a social pysch observation nowadays, I wonder if this is the part where we go on a tangent about real life being a multiplayer game :-\

Which is a position that pretty much no roguelike player holds. At the very least, the hard majority of RL lovers completely ignore that "Like Rogue" bullshit :P

Some roguelikes trace themselves back to Rogue. Some don't. Most are just borrowing the name as a shorthand for the genre in general.

If you want a fairly solid definition, the Berlin Interpretation is a good starting point.

Also where did you get this?
You can get the translation here. Speaking of what to do with it is skirting the forum ToS, though. Ostensibly, Seriyu imported the japanese version, constructed a method of creating a digital copy of its data for strictly personal use, and then created said copy and either applied the patch with the appropriate tools or directly applied it with maddeningly impressive coding skills.

Okayyeaah. Girl, super because movement can bite me, ahahahaha, brain/tekkaman/LPer's choice.

Anyway, rockon. I don't think I've actually finished J, but I did play through most of it and can't remember a bloody thing so yaaay.

Here's hoping you manage to get through all of it and then go on to an Alpha Gaiden playthrough :P

Already forgot where I read it (May have even been this thread, ha!), but they've apparently already made like 1+ (1.5+, now that I check news again) billion off of people buying tickets, so... yeah. Already doubled the investment.

Protip: When a cop asks you if they can search your car, it's not a request. It's bait. Refusal to allow a vehicle search is probable cause
That's not actually true. [snip]
It... well, it can depend on the state. And where you are in the state. Here in Florida? They can pull you over and search your car, period. Cops literally do not need any justification or cause, at all. Zero. Random vehicle searches have been made legally permissible. They find anything law breaking in the process, it's admissible. Technically, I think that applies to every point in the US where you're within a 100 miles of the border (which, again, technically includes anything within 100 mi of airports, beyond the obvious.). Came up in a thread a while back, actually. 4th amendment violations writ into law and all that.

... it could probably work with some kind of flower motif. Pink over green's common enough on flowering plants.

What? Flowers are awesome. Bugger that gender association nonsense, eh wot. But yeah, venus flytrap suit. Or watermelon. Nothin' tastes sweeter than a watermelon rind.

If the knowledge bot is accurate*, dex doesn't have anything to do with UC delay (Which is a simple 10 - UC/5). It does, of course, increase blade hands damage by 1 every 4 points, though. On the other hand, both dragon and statue forms increase with strength, as does BH at the same rate as with dex. Quick check at a winner shows about even in strength and int is probably what you'll be after.
