General Discussion / Re: Things that made you sad today thread.

Ah, sorry True, the trigger issue for me was the whole 'naivety gets preyed upon, is just how world is' (with the possible implication that that's not a horrific state of affairs :-\) thing, not so much what you actually ran in to. Yeah, that's what happens, it's just... not a thing I can accept for myself to be nonchalant about. The predator in that case is very strongly in the wrong, the prey not in the wrong at all.

The situation'd be more like a mechanic going around sabotaging other people's brakes and then blaming the people victimized for not being fully cognizant of that act happening. There's a lot of that basically happening nowadays, but instead of coming down on the victimizer like a hammer, people point fingers at the victim, or just shrug it off as 'how the world works.' We should be trying to do better than that, y'know? I know we don't, but the state of things isn't sufficient reason to not be troubled by the situation.

Things are a bit more complicated when you hire a mechanic to fix the brakes you know are broken and then you go in the next morning, bugger everything up, and then try to blame the mechanic for the brakes buggering up later :P

... however much the reality of it reflects this, it is a terrible axiom to hold that your fellow man is incapable of exerting more control than a lion. Man preying on man should be seen as a moral and societal failure -- of the predator in the former case, of the society that allows it to happen without punishment or prevention in the latter -- not an environmental hazard :-\

Yes, I'm well aware that's "not how the world works," but simply accepting that as how the world must work...? I refuse. We're supposed to be aiming for better than that.

But yeah True, blaming someone else for not stopping you or the person who takes advantage of you doesn't really fly, either. The only personal level condemnation to be leveled is against the person taking advantage of others, anything else is misplaced.

That's a bit like saying "It's the lion's fault for eating him, not the fact that he wandered into a nature preserve while wearing a coat made out of raw meat." I get what you're saying, but c'mon...the world is like that.

Mm, yeah. Summer should be interesting down here in Florida this year. I'm curious if there's going to be an upswing in heat-related deaths this year. Because... yeah. No winter (even by Florida standards), already hitting upper 70s mid to upper 80s and suchlike in march... there's going to be a'reaping this year. We usually lose quite a few, but signs are pointing to a "Let's thin that retiree* crop" season.

*And maybe anyone with lung problems or... whoever's stupid enough to be outside of AC for more than a few minutes, really.

Give us a choice of like six hundred colors and that's that. I beg of you.
FTFY, mweeheehee.

Seriously though, RGB values ftw. It's nice to just fiddle randomly and take what whimsy gives you.

Never heard of it? Madre owns the book/script/whatever, never got around to reading it. I hear it's interesting, though.

Ngh. I hate to be the (E:Second, ruddy ninja!) one to bring it up, but Darklands doesn't appear to actually be (legally) abandonware; that is, it wasn't released to the public. So you should probably nix the link, since it's technically violating the forum's guidelines :(

Most abandonware is in a morally gray area, yes, but not a legally gray one. If the rights owner hasn't released it to the public, well...

Yeah... t'be honest, the way the bill's worded almost looks to me like something designed to push for strictly-paper marriages. If you're going to be under suspicion for child abuse for not being married but have no interest in marriage or cohabitation for whatever reason, then the answer is to be married in name only, just to avoid that law. Marriage doesn't necessarily entail cohabitation, after all, nor does it force certain financial burdens on either partner to the best of my knowledge -- unlike, say, child support does on unmarried parents.

If it's possible for an outside organization to dissolve a marriage without the consent of the married, I haven't heard of it; so marrying someone and then living elsewhere, cohabiting with someone else or no one, etc., so forth, so on, would seem to be the obvious solution.

I'm now kinda' curious how many people have something set up like that... it'd make a lot of sense to do that sort of thing, and a cursory search for information isn't pulling up anything designed to disincentivise that kind of arrangement.

Jean is fine, too.

For critter names, go with species-appropriate foods, to get you in the right mood of expendibility. For chimchar, at least, Bushmeat. For Turtwig, Calipash. Not finding any interesting food-related names for penguins, though. Still, the idea comes across.

Fluff says all dead pokemon are to be cooked and fed to the rest :)

Aye cript, but you forget that a fair amount of the conservatives still have their head stuck up the ass of 200-years-ago!America (or at least their imagination of that time period ::)). They'll make a nice little hullabaloo over it, though probably with emphasis on little.

Frumple will seek to join in on this!

I will even suppress urge to summon iCthulhu on the second night :P

Seriously though, don't think I'd mind a one last huzzah run through.

You should. That's all I can really say. You should. Go and rechristen yourself PLAST.

Actually, if you can fit an I and C name at the end of that... or E and R. Either way.
