General Discussion / Re: free .zip file unpacker?
« on: January 04, 2012, 08:01:47 pm »
Likewise. The .7z archive format is good as well; it [usually] compresses noticeably further than .zip or .rar.
FTFY :P

I do tend to use .7zip for when I need to compress something, and winrar for unzipping stuff. It's literally entirely because of how it does the right-click menu thing, though; if .7zip didn't have that extra bit to it, I'd use it exclusively.

I don't know but getting to class late can be really embarrassing[...]
The real issue when you hit higher education is that getting to class late is disruptive. Interferes with what the teach is doing, the attention of students, etc. Most students at that point don't give two shits about you unless you've cultivated a relationship of some sort with them, so long as you're not messing with their chance at an education. You can get concern or irritation, but mocking generally doesn't happen.

I've had more than one college prof specifically say, "If you're late, don't come in." I've had some lock the door after class started. Usually, in both cases, the prof caveated things with 'come in after class, talk to me' and are pretty understanding if it's not endemic. Most teachers understand shit happens, so long as you're not letting it happen every bloody day. But for those folks that are late constantly... I've seen a couple people fail the class specifically for that. Grades were otherwise passing, but constant tardiness knocked it below the line.

Professors, at least, tend to be a lot more understanding if you talk to them about what's going on. If you're having trouble getting to class, sometimes giving them a heads up about what's going down can be the difference between them coming down on your arse or not.

Point being... I'unno. Just be chill and take measures to prevent being late. I've found waking up early can help tremendously with getting to class on time. If you've got a 20-30 minute empty space before class, you can show up and chill outside the room for a bit. Pre-college it's a bit of a bitch, though, as every high school and earlier schedule I've seen is just shit. No give time between classes, etc. Once you've got some solid control over when classes come down, things get easier.

Or as someone who's name eludes me put it:
No means no. Maybe means no. Yes can also mean no.
What, uh. What's left? Everything means no but... what?

What about cases where it's 'yes' the day of, but 'no' the day (or couple months) after? Is there blame to be laid, there?

Basically, what's your solution to the stuff you're bringing up, since communication can apparently fail?

You missed that bit where private prisons are literally enslaving their inmates, I guess :-\

And forcing them to do work that would be giving someone actually employed a larger than minimum wage.

... or that may have been a joke and I missed it. Either way!

All the other stuff they're adding are fun, too, but in my opinion the game would become a lot less frustrating if the developers focused on making the AI even a little less stupid for a while.
I'd absolutely love a way to set engagement distance for my minions. Having the idiot Volley park itself 1k or so from a station is just annoying when I know the Volley could be sitting 3k out and drowning the station in missiles.

Seriously though, usually don't have much trouble keeping rez up if I'm bouncing between missions; when I do, I pull out the grinder (Well, sunspot could manage, now) and a huge mining laser, go bug a mining station for a while. S'pretty easy to get up a few thousand rez in fairly short order that way.

You might want to add orcs and maybe halflings to that list in the future :D
Golden Horde orcs and imperialistic slaver halflings. That's what T4 did :P

If you're not going to just procedurally generate all that sort of thing, anyway. Which'd probably be more interesting, as you could actually get those two, and plenty more aside. Race being about biology instead of psychology/social organization, perhaps.

It'd be hilarious to have a playthrough with the elves being the underground master smiths :P

Again you're claiming your position is the only rational one.
Ngnh, actually, the precise wording was a little more careful than that, though possibly not intentionally. He's not actually claiming that his position is the only rational one, only that pre-life (which I like, and believe I'll abscond with) arguments are devoid of merit when considered rationally. As you point out, kaijyuu, it's entirely likely that both sides are lacking of that sort of merit, and some other heuristic than rationality (I wince, so hard, but it does happen in certain cases, especially if you're aiming to keep things to harder logic) is going to be needed.

From that position, it's probably fair to say educating people as to the rest of the things surrounding the issue would be of considerable greater net benefit than pandering to a (presumably) irrational argument and letting that argument bog down more beneficial time expenditures.

Huh. Stream cursed? Both videos loss and the game I managed to notice live ended in surrender, too...

I'm having bad luck catching the good endings, aren't I :P

Or maybe it's large enough I can strap it to my back like a war banner.
Fairly sure someone's done that, actually. It's dinging th memory for some reason. There's also those umbrella hats.

Yeah, those thoughts do tend to occur after the initial 'that could have been food' reaction. S'just the 'food' comes first. Comes from converting pretty much all expenses into 'this could have fed me for X period,' yeah.

I don't actually know anyone even remotely interested in gaming that doesn't already know about 3079 (and, in some cases, the earlier 30XX games), so I just want to give a thumbs up to hemmingjay and co. Cheers, and luck to the entrants!

Ahaha, there's days I hate the way I look at things. I see that list, and go... okay. Romney and Gingrich could have fed a person for a month, per vote. Paul, two people. Perry, eight.

... how many hungry people are in Iowa? *grumblemutter*

Now I kinda' want go convert campaign expenditures into a "Could have fed this many people instead" list, just to see how it goes.

There a list of total campaign money spent in Iowa, broken down by candidate? I'm guessing yes, but if someone's got it on hand...

It's a bit more common than you'd think, I think. I get a bit jittery about that too, considering m'madre has issues with memory and word choice more often nowadays*. I've heard it come up in conversation between folks my own age, too, enough that it's not something that's completely under the radar.

*Mind you, that's almost certainly the drug use earlier in her life, but the fear's there.

I don't get it, you don't want the child yet you have sex knowing well that you are creating potential life. I understand theres always mistakes but no matter what you are throwing away something. Fuck it theres no end to this argument and i really don't even have a solution for this unless you guys want to go back to chastity belts.
Not that simple, not that simple, not, that, freaking, simple.

Accidents happen, but the state of sex ed and availability of contraception in (numerous) places in the USA is absolutely shit poor (lolabstinence, to put it in simpler terms), and, as usual, the lack thereof hits the poor (who are consistently more likely both to become more pregnant and not be able to support the child) harder than everyone else.

You're not going to get people to stop screwing, but you can prevent that from ruining peoples lives. Adoption isn't always an option (There's orphanages, yes, but not always adopters), and isn't necessarily the best one. Carrying a child to term can, and I'll be directly honest and vulgar here, fucking ruin a woman's life; a lot of places of employment are not very understanding and there's very much a heightened financial strain involved, especially if the woman wants to frakking survive the birth, even more so if the child's going to make it, too. When someone's already barely scraping by, that stuff can be a breaking point. And again, you're not going to get people to stop having sex, especially in high stress situations where abortion is being considered, even more especially for poorer demographics. It's just not going to happen.
