I think it's because he wanted the reward to require interesting work to get?  That seems to be his entire point, that upgrading your weapons could have been an interesting and involved process.  One that has measurable stages of progress as you reforge your Excalibur to legendary status.  Instead we got a slot machine that uses cash.  And earning money efficiently in Terraria is an incredibly boring process.
This, mixed with a dislike of th'slot machine mechanic that only grows as the years pass -- rage not directed at Terraria specifically, but the mechanic in general. I can't think of a single example where it wasn't either boring or unhealthy, possibly both. One of the reasons I can't stand playing most MMOs for very long :-\

Plus from what I remember, the psych behind it is pretty nasty (reason some people get addicted to slot machines, etc.). That doesn't help.

The top tier forgings aren't necessary, so you aren't being kept from anything without them, except the ability to say "I have the best mods possible for this weapon." If that's all you really wanted, why not just hack up one of those in the first place?
To see how much cash it took to happen :P I probably would just use the invhack to change the item's prefix now, though. Quicker, ha.

I'd already gone through the majority of the game's content without the best prefixes (without particularly good ones at all, really) and wanted to see how it went with 'em. Didn't want to spend weeks to months farming bosses for cash for -- as you note -- a fairly minor feature.

If they had done it in a more interesting way, I'd agree :P Put simple, the goblin needs to either do strict upgrades or the cost needs to be cut to about a 10th, maybe less. Alternately, recipes for each prefix, with low chance of half-ingredient-refund failure. That slot-pulling BS needs to stay with the slot machines and out of games, unless the impact is extremely frakking minor (which the prefixes aren't.).

The problem with the reforge thing is that to get the amount that I mentioned would take either a gratuitous amount of time of basically zero-risk, boring-as-fook, grind -- not sexy grind, like getting up the souls, but boring-ass grind of boredom -- or months and months of gameplay (not going to happen). I don't take that shit from roguelikes anymore, much less something like Terraria. Buggery thing stopped being an interesting mechanic years ago.

I broke out the invhack just to bypass the reforging cash-grind bullshit. I've currently spent over 150 plat getting less than a dozen items to godly/legendary/mythic/unreal, depending.

Innocents don't exist on a Bay 12 subforum. Anyone that's even heard of DF to any degree pretty much automatically loses whatever innocence they may have had. You can't ruminate on arrow-catching babies and keep any, unfortunately.

Ehn, someone actually filched my angel statue. Had put it up on the last Kael map (before the latest reset), but someone went and replaced it with one of those ruddy pointless stone-built statues :-\

Could always invhack th'lot into existence, but... bleh. Effort. I'd rather be spelunking or somethin'.

Yeah, was talking about natural spawns, not statue-based ones. Haven't messed with the statues any. Haven't actually found any, except one angel statue, honestly.

AC's also a Civ game, though. A bit more interesting than the earlier ones, but still a Civ game.

As for not Sci-fi 4x games... I know they're out there, but I can't recall any of the top of my head that hasn't already been recommended. There's definitely some historical-type ones (Paradox games, maybe? Something like that.) I'll throw a second thumbs up behind Dominions 3, though.

You could check through this and (especially) this.

... five. Not three. Unless the statues have something special as far as that goes. I've definitely had up to five g'damn whoreagles on the screen at the same time, in any case. Might be the whoreagles that are special cased, hrm...

Should have made it 1 gift per person :P

Would have spread it out more and made more people happy :P
Folks who win multiple games can always share the excess willingly :P If by some miracle I get drawn for both the SotS stuff, someone else (whoever's next on th'list) will get get the non-collection one.

Drawings with multiple copies on multiple days (Terraria, ferex) probably should drop the winner off, though.

YES IT IS .FUCKDAMNIT I LOST T_T !
Sorry about that, bleh. Waited for a good day or so for a response :( Three more chances, though!

There's a couple more (SRPG) shining force games on the Sega CD, iirc, but only one was ever translated to any degree. Major emphasis on the remembering correctly, though. There's also a game gear one that's apparently been fantrans'd.

Remake or two on the GBA, but those were just remakes, nothing particularly new.

Whoreagles. Feathered whores of Babylon work, too. Herpies, yanno', whatever, really. Damn things are a plague.

Yeah, note the CBT mention; I've already had quite a bit of fun with a Big Zam (delightful in the BuCue mission) and the Zeong. The ridden custom looks interesting. S'kinda' sad that it's a scissor, though. Freaking rocks g'damn everywhere with their melee combo lock BS, bleh. Still, it has dakka, not puny sword waving or whatever. At least the Zakus have a decent axe instead of that wimparse pansy!beamneedlesword crap.

I'm not terribly interested in PvP, though. Eh. The Xamel's managed alright in normal missions when the rest of the group was on the ball, but I usually had to resort to th'Zam or Zeong if I didn't wanna' run some pissant gundam. Which I did, occasionally, but I felt dirty afterwards. Not a good dirty, either :-\

I've eyeballed the Kshatriya before, yeah, and the paper is a bonus. I like just about anything that's got at least some not-one-shot weapons. Beam guns don't have enough dakka. They don't even have moar dakka, bah. Machine guns, rocket barrages, whatever. Multi-shot beam's fine, too, but the only one of those I noticed in CBT was that bloody Kyrios. I don't like playing rocks any more than I like fighting them :-\

Ruddy RPS system could stand to be just ditched, honestly~ Considering how old the game is, though, I doubt that'd happen.

So, folks that are more used to this thing... what's the closest I can ride to this:
Spoiler: Captain Zaku (click to show/hide)

Playing around in the CBT, it didn't look like there was really a way to punch a Zaku up into the A-rank and above hitting zone... which terribly disappointed me, as normal+ difficulty was basically unplayable with anything below A rank :-\

Any suggestions? Alternately, what's closest to a Xamel in the A+ range? Pansy-ass gundams are pansy ass. Want something that looks like it won't fall over from a stiff breeze... and starts in a color other than white. Bloody plotarmor gundams overshadowing the interesting stuff, bah.

The Graveyard is complete, now I just need charactors to fill it. Like the graveyard in Olons silkthreads castle way back when.
Poor Oloi Al Silkthread. No one ever gets his/her/its name right.
