Steamband!

Then there's Arcanum:Whatever-that-subtitle-is. Pretty decent, that. That Rise of Nations fantasy spinoff had a steampunk faction.

Another pair of flash games is Sapphire skies, which is a little buggy but alright and Steamlands, which is pretty solid for what it is.

More info needed, Hitty. What do you mean, doesn't seem to show up anywhere? Where are you trying to download it from, etc?

Yeah, the whole LAN thing. Linked an article earlier in the thread that gives a really compelling argument, imo, that the online-only thing has precisely jack and shit to do with preventing piracy, and absolutely everything to do with exercising control over how legitimate users play the game. They're seeing how far they can shove draconian DRM into the single-player portion of their game (which is what a constant connection is, in respect to offline play), and that's really all that's happening.

Bliz (and others, this is becoming somewhat of a trend) are citing piracy as blatant misdirection, because it's a lot harder to argue against (Oh, you want us to be stolen from? How's that work, exactly?) and sounds like a good reason to implement that sort of control.

That constant-connection sort of thing makes good sense in online multiplayer games (Never trust the client!), especially where there's a PvP component, but for singleplayer? It's hard to see how one can't be wanting to call bullshit on that part. A notable amount of people are, but it doesn't bother a lot of others. I'm one of the former, myself, having a fairly spotty internet connection and abso-frakking-lutely refusing to play any singleplayer game that requires an internet connection to play, on general principle. I don't mind added functionality when connected -- that's actually pretty nice, a roguelike I play fairly regularly does that -- but requiring it for gameplay that has absolutely no interaction with other people (and thus no need to police for hacks, etc.) is simple BS and nothing else, s'far as I'm concerned.

The reason I (and others, really) care is, yanno', not that I don't or wouldn't enjoy D3 (I probably would, and it's the successor to one of the most commercially successful roguelike derivatives, which significantly interests me.), but because I can't, because someone, somewhere, wants to squeeze more pennies out of competitive multiplayer or some gimmick auction house I'll never use, and is willing to screw over the (now nonexistent!) offline portion in order to do it.

But hey, maybe we'll get really lucky. Bliz turned back from that completely flipping stupid "Use your real name" thing. Maybe they'll leave a offline option for singleplayer. It'd be nice. Not gonna' happen, but hey, hope springs eternal.

So yeah. Closed beta was extended 'till the eighth. Anyone else playing? I've been mucking around a bit, and it's fairly enjoyable.

"Normal" difficulty missions are horribly misnamed, though. I've been in probably a dozen now, and each and every one of them have been total wipeouts :-\ They're bloody vicious.

On the bright side, it warms my heart to see a swarm of Zakus brutally murdering a full party of big name gundams. I need to run a few more Psycho gundam rounds in the morning, heh.

Well, the other option is killing the smiter... though I suppose that gets you out of LoS, too, in a sense. Disabling the bugger somehow (confusion or polymorph) can work, too. Meph cloud is the bane of orc priests, just as it's the bane of all the other orcs (Except Roka.) and 90% of the first dozen or so levels of the dungeon, most of lair, parts of vault... well, you get the idea. Still hilarious how ridiculously overpowered that spell is in the early/mid game. No clue if silence shuts smite down, as I've never actually used silence for anything.

Proactive resistance, friends. Sometimes you have to violently inflict your resistances upon others.

But to me this complaint sounds like "Well, it still isn't gold-plated!"
... in Terraria, you can fix this. Gold plate everything -- islands, caves, hell, the sky... all of it. Layer of gold bricking for everyone!

Prudent (Prudence -- bonus, this is actually a thing people are named) would probably work.

I did do a hardcore one once. Forget how it ended up, other than dead after excavating a fairly large catacomb/cave-type area underneath the house-thing I constructed.

Maybe its something like that eva ep, hum, where the boss comes in two (or more) parts and if you don't kill them more or less simultaneously, their partner(s) respawns 'em.

... and they're on the other ends of the map. I could see a huge ass kraken popping up in the background and spawning tentacles in both the oceans, as well as causing standing water of sufficient depth to spawn little krakenlings. You'd have all the tentacles dead at the same time to kill the boss and stop the krakenling onslaught, but not damaging one group long enough causes 'em to start spawning new tentacles in the other group (which is on the other side of the map~).

Something like that would be both interesting and a 'haha bite me' to single player :P

Or it could be something as simple as just having a boss that has two parts that have to be hit in short sequence to each other to cause actual damage. Loner could do it with piercing attacks and maybe explosives, but multiple people would make it much easier.

Gimmicks can do things to force encourage grouping that damagebloat could never accomplish :P

Your words make me want to build floating islands sans horseshoes.

Kinda' like the waterless/cobwebless helldrops I like digging. That's, yanno', a straight shot from the surface, no holes in the side. Sometimes I leave warning signs~

"Oh hey, a hole in the ground! Let's see what's in it. What, sign? Bah! Who needs 'em." *minutes later* "WHY AM I STILL FALLIN-" *splortch*

Bonus points if you make a little horseshoe shaped landing pad. I'll have to remember to do that next time. Horseshoe master race, representin'.

If it wasn't talking specifically about th'chest burstin' impregnatin' sort of alien, anyway. That bonus is pretty literal, heh. Helps prevent you from needing to drink ink. A nice thing~

West is to the left. Terria's sun sets in the east.

... last time someone did that they got yelled at and had to fix it :-\

People were throwing things at me when I just lowered the bloody thing by a dozen or so blocks, bah.

On the flip side, completely excavating one of the deserts and turning it into a greenhouse was met with various sorts of applause. That was nice :)

Have you camped in the wild or existed inside the town when the day rolled over, ie NOT inside a dungeon/sewers???
In the wild, but not camped... that's probably it, I guess.

Basically out of turns, now, so I'll stick around this stagdell or whatever place for today, see if I end up with healing spells tomorrow. Place has a level one dungeon fairly close to it, which I looted for delightful monies (at least compared to the rest of my time, so far). Priest is finally in full plate and not dying quite so much, so I ran a couple of extermination quests. Between those and the dungeon, everyone's up to level 3!

*vague mutterances* It's been two days in game, according to the email notification thing, but my priest hasn't memorized any new spells. Is this, uh, normal?
