Other Games / Re: AirMech - Herzog Zwei gets a successor?
« on: August 31, 2011, 06:57:06 pm »
T'be honest, I didn't play Herzog Zwei much. Enjoyed what I did well enough for a game of that type and era, but didn't invest much time into it at all.

Mostly what's twinging my huzzah urge is that AirMech appears to be giving a serious hail to one of the classics of gaming history and not brutally mangling its spirit in the process. How often do we actually see that?

Not often, that's how often. Not often at all. For that alone, I'm interested :P

Game play videos even look alright. Bit like I'd prefer it slowed down a little, but hell, that's what CPU throttlers are for.

Dev's site/blog here, with an early gameplay video.

I know basically nothing about this game, saw mention on pixel prospector, checked out the trailer and went, "Holy shit, Herzog Zwei!" Haven't noticed anything about dates, finer points of gameplay, etc, etc, etc. Can't even hear what the videos say 'cause my sound's mostly busted. It's obviously not out for release yet, and they're planning on expanding the test base at some point in the future, but that's all I've got. Other than tentative unbridled enthusiasm, of course.

I'm throwing this out to raise some awareness (becauseholyshitherzogzwei -- people need to know this!) and remind myself I'm somewhat stoked. That, and it sounds like something that DF folks we be interested in, what with the predecessor et al.

Can I get a huzzah?!

S'been a while since I've won with a rogue... any rogue. I think the only time I've actually done it was with one that basically used wands as a godhammer, thanks to good ol'freakishly high skill points. A high use magic roll on some wands can do a lot of damage. We're talking one-shot young adult dragon level stuff here. Though it may have been the bard that did that... or both. Wands got some kick to 'em.

Anyway, if we're talking winning combinations... the two most ridiculously powerful builds I've ran have been a priest (3, pain/passion/strength, of Zurvash)/ barb (8 ) -- once with a drow, once with an orc -- which did ridiculous things like punch greater demons to death while grappled and hanging off the ceiling, and a borderline gamebreaking freakish-int thaum-specialist mage/loremaster, who got her int up over forty(!) and started turning adult dragons into rats. At that point, the whole game is basically your bitch (and I was there before hitting level 11 :D).

Casters in general are just completely overpowering in Incursion, somewhat unsurprising considering one of its heaviest influences. I once did a minimum buff run with a mage (and DitL'd it, here), beat a bloody challenge (edit: wait, it was a standard run. Eh.) game with nothing but detect monsters and floating disc as sustained spells. Druids and mages are roughly tied for 'biggest badasses in Incursion', with priests and rangers coming in around second. The rest are bloody good (except maybe monks, who have a helluva time getting off the ground), but those four are simply top tier. Crazy stuff goes on wit'max level incursion characters :P

Can't say I remember for sure, but there might have been some memory leaks left here and there, heh, before the game went into refactor mode. The game definitely increased in ram usage as you got deeper (and saving took longer and longer :-\), but that alone shouldn't have been eating up the ram of something capable of running vista.

Necrophysiology is indeed awesome, though, when you can spare the feat for it.

I just noticed, in an odd state of coincidence, both me and baruk were both on the same team in each tournament and were the only ones on those teams to win a game -- one each, each time. Baruk, incredibly, got the exact same point total. If that was intentional, it's amazing :P

Didn't do as good this time m'self, though. Got precisely 101 points less, and ranked a fair bit lower. Team also came in at a lower over rank (20 vs 17) but was overall fairly close in performance -- point wise, anyway. That the point total was almost the same despite playing nearly 1/10th the amount of games is pretty impressive :P It's not really a fair comparison (different people!), but it is kinda strange that the blacksmiths were only ~100 points behind the miners, despite the lowest point total in the miners being higher than any one of the three lowest scores on th'smiths. Seems to have mostly come from the team-granted points for having particular race/combo wins. Gathered 10 points more for the team overall, counting this, with baruk beating his previous contribution by 75.

What does it all mean? Absolutely nothing! say it again, now~ S'interesting to compare numbers, that's all :P

Flip coin. If heads, hell. If tails, pan.

Obviously it will make the minishark shoot actual sharks. Sharks which burrow through the land using worm-movement. Landsharks, if you will.

The firing rate will remain unchanged.

Last minute blitz, ha! I got swap rune for the second time with ~1 1/2 hours left in the tourney :P

The chances of anything coming from this is incredibly slim. Lets see just what spamming shadow creatures all over the place can pull off!

E: Actually, I don't really feel like trying, ha. Let my last action be stealing a combo high score from Neil.

E2: So it's... over, right? Someone want to tally up how we did? Too tired :P

My hilarioption is oracle or blood fountain, imprisioned, with as many positive 3s in your scales and as high a dominion as you can fit. Actually, for pangaea, Turmoil 3, Prod/Growth/Luck/Magic 3, temp either neutral or heat 1. Magic is whatever's left over that you can fit. This is actually what I usually play when doing comp stomps.

Alternately, a earth 4 death 3 or so gorgan with whatever scales you feel like. Gorgans just roflstomp most indies in the game and with a lil'kit can turn into a violent army murderer. S'good stuff.

Choice three, for maximum hilarity, is go pheonix with a good 8-10 dominion, get that suicide bomber fire spell, throw it at things until everything's dead. Immortal flying kamikaze bird.

The most telling trait of a computer based RPG is the existence of murder as a viable form of interpersonal problem solving*. I find this to be almost universally true to the genre.

I can't tell if this says more of the players or the developers, really.

*And the existence of interpersonal problems beyond "These are aliens/nazis/zombies, kill them," or some equivalent thereof.

Sauromatia or Niefelheim without using the big blue ones (You'll actually end up with a stronger empire :P).

I always vote for 75/50/50 gold/etc, 7-9 indie power, and maxed out magic sites. 15 on hall of fame's nice, too...

Are you throwing in any mods? Love me th'magic site mod, heh.

Yeah, if you're getting to point playing is frustrating just say screw it and blitz. There's no chance at all of you getting the DDHe high score, so you might as well go for it. If you die, at least you can play something more interesting. If you don't die, then hey. Win. Don't worry, be happy.

You'll probably die :P but that's okay, we'll still love your corpse, all night long, hohohoho.

Maybe the ghost'll manage to surprise someone. It could happen!

Gratzie, Akh!

or  v8 or tomb or vestibule, or other choice you think of something!

Go do vault 8. Stair dance to take out the vault guards piecemeal, then have fun inside. Biggest threat to you is going to be golden dragons (The blazes are you doing without rPois?) and titans (airstrike hurts), possibly the yaktaur packs. Shadow dragons are easy to drop so long as you've got rN+++. You're probably able to melee tenticular monstrosities to death, so no big if they make a show. Other than that... It's not that bad, though, so long as you're careful.

[...]i had no fire resistance i couldn't do zot[...]
You don't do Zot 5 without at least rF++ (you want rF+++) and rElec. If you do, you will be murdered unless you, specifically, are blessed by every benevolent god in any and every existence that both is and could possibly be. You are not so blessed. Either an orb of fire or electric golem will kill you. Find at least rF++ and rElec before doing Zot. They don't necessarily have to be going at the same time, but you need both on immediately accessible (read, jewelry or buff spells) swap, for when you run into an appropriate critter.

Focus armor, fighting, and shields. Possibly open maces and flails back up for XP, so you can hit harder.. You might want to start feeding more XP into spellcasting, if for no other reason than getting swiftness and summong butterflies reliable. Repel missiles would also be tremendously useful, even for a heavy armor/shield critter. Swap out that sustenance ring for something useful. Either the pantheism or liberty randarts, probably. Maybe the fire rPois one, but you don't want cold vulnerability going into vault 8 (Golden dragons can breath cold. They will, if you're in there and vulnerable.).

Have you checked the shops that might have food? Dump's saying there might be two of 'em, on orc and vault 4.

S'all I can offer.

E: Oh, except this! See if you can't hunt up a vorpalise scroll... and maybe one of the branding spells. You only need to get it off once, to further improve your already awesome scourge. P.S. Slime will ruin most of your equipment, more likely than not. Don't go in there.

Manged to kill Mennas with haunt, at one point, on one of the sprint maps.

... it took a lot of ghosts.
