Yeah, checking out the demo, so far, it's alright. Nothing I've not seen before, but fairly well done. The starscape mention was highly accurate. The default button for switch ships needs to be further away from the defaults for switch targets, though.

There's a couple of things I've had trouble with. First, the game starts at a freaking ridiculous default resolution (19XX by something-or-other), apparently, and the only way to change it that I could find was actually hunting down the settings file (buried in application data on XP) and manually change it via text editor. That was a serious kick to the ass on trying to start the bloody thing and either one hell of an oversight or seriously piss-poor design. Game should auto-detect native resolution :-\ I've had computers that default res would have crashed.

Other thing is the bloody demo opens up a webpage every time you exit. Every freaking time. Total PitA when you've have to have your default browser closed in order to run the game. I recommend killing the process instead of exiting normally. Again, that really shouldn't be done in the year 2011 :-\

Well, other than that, it seems fairly interesting. Can't really figure out how good the wingman control is, but it occasionally seems damn stupid (mine, curse you!). On the other hand, it dogfights pretty well. Can't say anything on weapons yet, other than lasers and missiles seem a lot more powerful than cannons (easier to hit with, harder to dodge). It's very pretty, but it really does feel like a beta from what the demo offers.

I probably wouldn't recommend it at 15$. It feels like a 7-10$ game from the demo.

Stripmined small maps... maybe. The medium, perhaps, but doubtful. The large large+ ones? Those things are freaking huge. Even with 7-8 people, it's going to take a lot of effort to actually strip a world of resources.

Now, 20-30 folks? That wouldn't take long. But half to a third, or less... it's going to take some time. Anything'll strip-minable given enough time, regardless of numbers, but there's quite a lot of space to expand and exploit.

Tiy's one of the graphics folks working on the game. All the sprites mentioned up there are different from anything we've seen in the LPs, apparently. So, uh, chances are pretty high. Approaching 1, really.

Anyone still paying attention know if there's going to be a non-steam option for purchase? Don't have anything non-personal against steam (it craps on my computer, mostly), but I'd really rather the money I spend on the game go directly and fully to the devs, yanno?

That and steam an' my comp's never really gotten along well, bleh.

Yeah... the T-team has been pretty chill about the whole leak thing. It doesn't really seem to have had any effect on the time frame, other than a bit of an afternoon put aside to disrupt someone's schedule. Nothing major.

As for Terraria being pirated in general, I'd be fairly confident in saying they're probably resigned to it -- Blue's responses re: Modding showed they're pretty aware that the game's going to get hacked into little pieces in due time. Whether that means they won't bother with more than token effort to implement DRM type stuff, I couldn't say.

As for pirating in general, it tends to boil down to a strict numbers game. Doesn't really matter how much any particular company or team puts into stopping it from happening, the internet just has more people and more time to spew at it than pretty much any other entity around. Anything and everything will be hacked and shared, sooner or later. Most DRM I've seen is more about making it "later" than not at all, to get the initial sales glut.

In any case, most of the folks I've seen admit to nabbing up the leaked version have also openly stated they're buying a copy as well -- some of them multiple copies. I don't think it's going to hurt Terraria much, if at all.

As for your dev dreams, White, better idea is to make something so awesome people will pay you for making it even after pirating it, rather than trying to stop them from pirating it :P The former gets you money, the latter just wastes your time and goads the ones that do it as a challenge. The principle's more than a little off, there, but it's the reality of the digital age we're all, even if we don't realize it, really hoping comes about. It's better than the most likely alternative :-\

Iirc, the stated requirements for an inhabitable room is "back wall, table, chair, light, door that opens both ways." Which may mean you can make a little L tetris-shape coming off the entrance block above the door, fulfill all the requirements, and have a <smallest room possible> brick stuck and blocked off out in the middle of nowhere. Guide can't get out, nothing besides worm-types and certain projectiles can in, everyone's happy! Except the guide. Stuck in a room. Maybe at the bottom of the ocean or something, I'unno. Glass walls sounds like a good idea, so he can look out and see the world passing by. Maybe they'll be fish by release day, so he can have living things taunting him.

Bleh, splitscreen. Just stick two separate lan-connected computers right beside each other.

Though I'm probably biased, there. I still get horror flashbacks to th'SNES and suchlike and their tiny, tiny, four-player screens. So very small... Multiple moniter/computer setups seem much more pleasant, nowadays, and not terribly expensive (especially if you can just plug a TV or something into a laptop or spare computer or whatever.).

Other folks have mentioned the real trick, though, at least for the PC. How to do two separately moving cursors at once? I don't think I've ever actually seen that on a PC, though it sounds like it might be interesting for more than just games...

To Terraria, yes. I forget exactly where, but it's from the mouth of devs. It's not in the faqs, but it was mentioned in passing in some kind of update... thing. Somewhere. I'll see if I can hunt it up. Bleh, no luck. It's either mentioned in passing in one of the LPs (I don't think so), or it was said by Blue as a "What's Redigit doing" thing in IRC, but not during any of the actual Q&A session type things. I'm terribly annoyed I can't find the actual message somewhere :-\

Though yeah, re: Oldschool, I remember that well. I also remember how mindbogglingly impressed I was by the japanese -- at least, that was the folks that first put out a game I played with th'layout -- usage of zxc or asd. Terribly much easier on my poor hands, it is, and less likely to hit some arcane key combination that makes the system do something funny.

EDIT: Found this much:

"And so would the ability to bind buttons on the hotbar to new keys, but I think that was mentioned somewhere in this thread. And probably by a trillion others. "

Redigit has stated his own desire to allow controls to be customized eventually. Again, through a content update most likely.

They still haven't gotten around to answering the one real remaining question I have: are the controls going to be configurable. Games like Terraria (Super Meat Boy, ect....) seem to have this pathological aversion to anything but WASD and Space Bar. I _hate_ using the space bar to jump.

Mm? Configurable controls was added a 'lil while ago. That bit on 'custom controls'. S'pretty obvious that means you can change 'em around.

Which is good. The spacebar on my plug-in keyboard is actually semi-broke, so it's annoying to use, and I prefer to have the lefthand doing whatever the righthand isn't for mouse/keyboard control systems -- so switching jump to w is a priority :P As is clustering all the important stuff over there, too. Crafting to q or `, inventory to e, etc, etc. I happen to hate using ctrl, alt, space, etc, as input buttons as well :-\

I often wonder what kind of deviant soul doesn't hate those as jump or attack buttons. I'm guessing  people with gamepads, maybe. Freaks :P

Underground homes are completely possible. Even in the underworld lava layer. Although thats dangerous. heh.

Rockin'. This means it's at least theoretically possible to build a world-large building.

Nah, the thing where he spent about an hour hunting diamonds in minecraft, then falls into lava with 5 in his inventory on the way back up. In the last ~5 minutes of the video. It was harsh, hah.

Only reason I knew about it was the SA folks making a little noise about it happening, heh. The occurrence in question.

I'd lay 50/50 odds the fiasco in his interim minecraft video had something to do with it :P

... the eater's the only one we've seen that doesn't actually fly, innit? Just jumps rather high, so to speak? If so, I imagine the number you can solo is highly correlated to either the number of bombs you can fit in your inventory... or the number of sand blocks. I could totally see building a little platform juuust out of reach of the poor thing, then dropping an inventory of sand on it. Bonus points if you have a few extra chests full of sand waiting there for you.

Someone else could be running around on the ground summoning more and more eaters.
