Other Games / Re: TOME4b19: am I doing it wrong or is it really slow?
« on: January 29, 2011, 06:23:59 pm »
Th'FPS thing's my best suggestion, but there's occasionally slowdowns even with that. Low tier graphics cards just don't interact with T4 very well :-\

I generally play with something else open in another window (either another game, or something to read, etc.) to pass time while it's chugging along.

As an aside, there's a way to just bypass all that unlocking nonsense if you're willing to edit a file. I can PM you th'info if you're interested, or just spoiler it on this thread. So much less time wasted, so much more time spent enjoying content. I wouldn't be playing T4 at all if it weren't so easy to do that.

'Roguelike' is considerably less words :P

Still accurate, too. There's not really anything in T4 that's not in other RLs, it's just that T4's one of the first to pull as many together into such a polished package, performance issues and bugs aside. Despite being one of the oldest of game types, it still feels like RL development and expansion outside of the big names (NetHack, Angband, Crawl, ADOM) is only just now kicking off. The next three-five years promise to have some seriously interesting things go down in the RL scene, and T4's continuing development is only one of many. Good times.

Remembered the secondary thing you can try: In one of the options (video or graphics, I think. Somewhere in there.) there's an option to set desired FPS. Set it to something like 5, then give it another go.

With a netbook, I imagine what's killing you more than anything is the graphics card; most of T4's CPU consumption (barring some pathing stuff when there's a bazillion critters on the screen) is graphics-related. I've got similar problems with a crappy integrated one on my laptop.

E: Golems have laser eyes now. Damn, I wish I had noticed 19 earlier.

There's hope of optimization in the future, yes, but that's in the future. There's been issues with graphical junk causing slowdowns in the past, and while stuff's getting fixed, it takes time, et al. But yeah, T4 is actually pretty resource heavy, so you're probably not doing anything wrong, especially if your comp's specs aren't freakishly powerful. If you do have a killer rig, though, something else is probably going on and more info will be needed.

My suggestion is thus: Go into the options and turn off everything that'll turn off and still allow the game to run. Set the particle number to 0. Then see if the game's still wrecking your comp. T4 plays fine without all the fancy graphical shenanigans :P

I've found that cutting the particle count to 0 or 1 basically halved CPU consumption on my computer, in most situations.

E: Also, try asking over on the T4 forum or IRC channel if you have specific areas or situations where slowdown is bad. T4's dev is pretty open and tries to help when he can, and the rest of the community tends to be pretty non-hostile. It might be that whatever problem you're having just needs to be brought to Darkgod's attention.

How2playMorrowind: Abuse Soultrap glitch. Give self 10k luck. ???. Profit.

Re: Spears. To quote probably a half-dozen different people, "If the sword is the king of the battlefield, the staff is the queen." Chess reference, o'course. A spear is a pointy staff. A polearm is a staff with interesting pointy and/or choppy and/or smashy things at one or both ends. Spears are far more awesome than swords, but arguably less phallic heroic and more a symbol of everyone on this board peasantry than slavers tyrants the nobility. +1 for pointy sticks. /sage nod

Actually, wasn't there already a spat a bit back about spears being in the elder scrolls games? Maybe it was th'oblivion thread...

Man, Der Ring des Nibelungen totally ripped off Toady's idea*. It had dwarves and artifact jewelery!

*Well over 100 years before Toady was born. Ain't that a hat-trick?

Seriously though, it's good to see Dungeon Keeper inspiring anything, even if apparently not terribly much. Every little bit helps.

Command and Conquer :P And this. And Warzone 2100. And Spring.

Honestly, with the size of memory sticks nowadays, you're not terribly limited. I could fit the entirety of my roguelike folder on a single one, and there's probably over a hundred games in it right now. You're not exactly pressed for room when you've got over a gig of space.

Except most of the people burned for witchcraft were Christian, not pagan. That's the point th'folks you quoted were trying to make. There were certainly more and more important factors in the murders executions than religion.

Also, referring to "witchcraft" as a religion is pretty misleading, especially during that time period. Non-church sanctioned rituals and other practices weren't exactly something you could group together as a single unified thing -- and for quite a large amount of such things, it's arguable whether there's a religious aspect to them at all. Spiritual, ascetic, or medical aspects, maybe, but those are different things.

Though I wouldn't be terribly surprised if puritanical law just grouped th'lot of such things together and said, "Kill." That's pretty common when dealing with non-believers.

Hrm, memory must be failing me, then. Remember playing shadowrun on an actual SNES without much trouble, many years ago. It's been a while...

Oh, and the Elemental "novel" he wrote is probably the worst book written in the last twenty years.

Categorically impossible. Reason for saying this: Fanfiction.

Your point stands, though. Bad writing makes bad things worse.

Or better yet, just play both. They're different enough from each other to get enjoyable playthroughs from either.

Detect Creatures was third. We don't even have that as a spell anymore. Haven't for a while...

Not that haste and blink aren't still pretty powerful, but I somehow doubt that's indicative of actual usage... and I'd expect blink to be more common than haste, nowadays. It's more useful, I'd argue. Less needed investment, less downsides, and controllable blink is an item away and freakishly useful for escape.

Obviously it'd be behavior locked in some ways. Go-go 3 laws. (AI: I dun wanna' play with this idiot! Behavior Program: BUT THOU MUST.)

While the moral choice, it'd be incredibly stupid to create something just as intelligent (or even remotely as intelligent) as ourselves without making bloody sure it's not going to do something we don't want it to.

In short, slavery. But it's alright, since we made it (At least until it reaches the age of majority). ::)
