Ok, this one has been bothering me for a couple of days now, it was a strategy game, kinda oldish, I thought it was called "one of the enemy" but apparently not, the story involved an alliance of races fighting against a species that extracts fuel from the bodies of alliance races, it had high ground, and you flew in units, and you could take experienced units with you to the next map... Any ideas?

Man, like a month later, but just in case the vague suggestions given in response to this wasn't enough to find it again, I re-stumbled across the place I first found it: http://playthisthing.com/i-enemy

Pretty nice game, all told, and was fairly difficult for as far as I got into it. And free, so hey. No reason not to grab it up for a try.

Nope.
Cannon Fodder wasn't a RTS, it was a shooter.

Wait... this Cannon Fodder? I'd probably say it's about as much RTS as it is shooter, actually, not one or the other. The closest thing I think I've played to it is Baldies, but it was a bit more hands off and scaled up.

There was actually something relatively recent in the indie scene that sounded very similar in style to CF, just with tanks. Lemme' spend a lil' time hunting it down again; I'll edit this post if I find it. Cannot find. Can't remember enough to even really know where to look. On the bright side for you, somewhere between now and 2009, a cannon-fodder-like game was released either as a FOSS game or by a small company. That limits the sphere of seeking... slightly. Good luck!

Could manage it. Though, whoever starts the map (if I don't end up doing it), be sure to crank resources and junk to th'max. Speeds everything up, so so very much. Bouncing around in cap ships is generally more entertaining than twiddling your thumbs waiting for th'cash to research 'em :P

Googling picks up that it's actually a game Dorten made, that at v.09 was made available over on the ADOM forums but whose download box thingy has apparently expired.

Couldn't find a more recent version, though. Well, couldn't find one at all, technically, but yeah.

P.S. Your google-fu is weak, grasshopper.

The next time I see a man dying in the streets I'll remember to stop on him.

Part of me is curious as to the last time you saw a man dying in the streets.

The other part is occupied with the thought of someone deliberately stopping and standing on a dying fellow. I honestly can't say whether stomping or stopping on a dying man is the worse act, which is interesting.

Roll 1d6 and formulate an opinion.

That was fun, we should make a public server sometime and see how good we are compared to other people

Haa... that'll probably be absolutely hilarious. In the 'end in hilarity' sense.

I approve!

It sounds, at least, that th'proposed system would reduce the viability of victory dancing. Victory dancing is a lot safer for budding casters than trying to spit out low-success spells in the middle of combat, which can get you violently killed in short order -- especially if you manage to trigger one of the more dangerous miscast effects.

But we don't really, yanno', know. Will have to see how the system actually works in practice.

E: I think the only thing I'd be really concerned about is player feedback. With the XP pool system (for all that I'm not terribly fond of it), it's pretty easy to tell where the XP is going and to what degree. It'd be pretty annoying if the player didn't have some indication of how the skills were rising beyond the occasional 'gained level of X'.

Actually...

Anyway, go people go. I resubmit my request of anything using a battle system akin to Ogre Battle. There's apparently a few comparable systems on new consoles, but all I've got is a PC, so...

Firebreathing Skelk.

Also:
It would probably be best to openly declare combat in the chat so that if Jay needs to check the records any consensual combat is easily recognized and we don't have any crap about bans for fighting in an arena.

"HAVE AT THEE!" "Wait, wha-"*dies*

Honestly though, I think health would be cool if it could be modded so falling damage is completely removed. Being able to drop 60 blocks and live makes building vertical so much quicker.

They could always distribute their food digita- oh wait.

That's actually a decently sized business nowadays, at least the selling is. Actual distribution is physical, o'course, but th'rest of it's digital. Mostly with baked goods, but the business is there.

Or basically: Games Certain sorts of game development need a LOT of money

Fixed, more or less. We've kinda' seen it proven a dozen dozen times already that you don't need a multi-million dollar budget to produce a solid, fiscally viable gaming product. Re: Most games pre-PS2, various indie/small developer successes, etc, etc, etc. Maybe to make multi-millions in sales (though probably not quite so much in profit), but that really does not have anything to do with making games, just making a notable profit off them. Cutting overhead (read: Not going down the lawlgraphics path.) does a pretty good job of things, too.

Point on the risk, though. Game devs have more or less always known that, though, and it doesn't seem to be really stopping folks.

I'unno, I guess I just don't like seeing the 'hurrhurrgamesneedmondobucks' thing. For some reason, it incites the same emotive response I get when people say they have to speed to avoid getting run over by other people speeding. Too tired to figure out what it is, bleh.

I'm not really sure what the difference is between Ogre Battle and Tactics Ogre, but they're kinda the same Ogre-ey goodness right?

Only in a vague sense. Tactics was SRPG, Battle some kind of freaky/awesome Squad-based RTS/RPG... thing. They share character classes and a tendency in storyline tropes, but gameplay was, uh, radically different.

Didn't know about the PSP tactics thing, but my response is 'meh'. The Tactics Ogre line is awesome, yes, but the market's kinda' inundated with SRPG stuff. I'd really like the Neo Geo one that never made it to the states somehow revived and brought over... or a new Ogre Battle. We've still got room for at least four prequels!

EDIT: Though if you're talking about "Let Us Cling Together..." unless there' something radically different going on, that's, uh, a port. It's already been out for a looooong time on the SNES and PSX. The images on Gamefaqs seems to support that. Prettier, but still the same game.

I'd say Quest, but apparently they're still around. Why they haven't produced a new Ogre Battle game since '99, I don't know and probably don't care, but they're due for it damnit.

Hudson Soft, I guess. Far East of Eden is apparently fairly awesome, or something. Couldn't tell due to moonspeak.

Neverland waaait a second. They're still around!? The guys who did Chaos Seed also did Rune Factory. My mind is blown.

Restarting as Bay12, no space, same pass. Won't set it into 1-team mode this time ::)

Got a map going. Name Bay 12, pass Dwarves. Still mucking around with options a little, but that's no big.
