(I've seen this spell bug out before and instead create a large line of doors in the middle of a room).
Actually, that's not /wizard lock/ (which doesn't actually do anything besides shut doors from a distance, as it's bugged :(), but /wall of doors/, a separate spell. I could probably recommend Incursion as well, of course. It's not innovative per se (yet! Boss Mensch has plans, heh.), but what's there is bloody well done (often) when it's not bugged (rare enough, heh.).

Triangle Wizard and Wizards Quest. Triangle Wizard's spells generally aren't terribly innovative, per se, but they're certainly interesting. The system where drop percentages are influenced by what you pick up is a terribly interesting way of implementing specialization.

Wizard's Quest, though, is something you see only rarely. It's got five spell 'shapes' and twelve base element, most of which has some status effect or extra damage type associated with it. What gets interesting, though, is that you're allowed to combine any two elements into a combined one, coming out to a total of 78 different potential spell elements. Being a roguelike, it's also viciously difficult :P

Re: Drawing spells, though, the earliest I remember seeing it was Anvil of Dawn, a '96 game. The spell descriptions in that thing were freaking awesome, too. The spore spell you can get early/start with (I don't really remember) was fairly incredible. Wish I had played it further than the end of the starting dungeon, heh, as what I did play was pretty solid. I generally can't stand the old first-person CRPG games, yeah, but I actually enjoyed what I played of Anvil.

Sif MuSu is where it's at, maan, as far as non-hybrid summoners go. Crap gets ridiculous when you can spit out a haunt every 2-3 turns and a literally unending stream of summon imp (plus the occasional canine and ice beast) kills pretty much everything until then. I just learned (a few days after the tourney) about the 1/2 XP thing, though. That made me sad.

'Course, Mummies kinda' suck. Probably the only mummy combo that isn't horribly gimped compared to every other race, the poor things.

You're too spoiled with the new games :P.

Definitely my gut reaction to the 'not pretty' response, heh. I guess having not actually played any game prettier than, say, HL2 (or dropping graphic quality to "as low as it goes" to keep the computer from melting) has its advantages -- as does opening up T2 and comparing :P

Firefall's prettier than Tribes 2. For someone who's never actually played any cell-shaded games (Well, maybe the Oni demo? The one with th'chick?), the whole thing was suitably jaw dropping from a graphics point of view. Of course, I generally have the same response to everything close to mainstream made after ~2004, so maybe I'm just naive about that sorta' thing. Always been of the opinion that there's a certain point where prettier or not just doesn't make a difference. It's no longer FF7 (or Treasure Hunter G :P) quality, which completely blows my poor, time-lagging, crap-rig-owning mind.

I think I'm better off for it, though. Makes all the pretty colors easier to ignore :D

That? Free?

Damn. Is there something I can RSS or whatever for news on it, so I know when it comes out? When will the beta start? It looks like it'd melt my computer, but if the full thing is even remotely like that trailer, I'm not entirely sure I'd care. And free? Tribes inspired, modern game, for free?

There's a catch. I don't know what it is, but there's one in there, somewhere.

... and I'd probably hop in anyway, even if it turned my little free-play no-nothing into goo, just so I could watch stuff like that. That was almost cinematic. Though I've never played borderlands... or tribes 2 or beyond, ha. Spent some hours with th'first one getting kicked around, but that's about it...

There isn't (well, wasn't last time I checked, i.e. a few months ago). There's a java one that can run a few things, barely, but a fully functional, fairly compatible PSP emulator just doesn't exist at th'mo.  :-\

The java one does look pretty promising. Too lazy to hunt down its forum for linkage, though :P

I think you're mistaking Duane for Dowan.

Whoops. Yeah, I was. Actually, I haven't ran into Duane very often, which is probably why I mixed 'im up with Dowan, who I run into regularly. The name's even fairly similar...

Francis and Norbert I stumbled over numerous times in th'tourney, though, I do kinda' remember them wandering around. I guess I was mostly just curious as to if there was centralized 'white page' material for crawl; I know the information is (mostly) out there, I just didn't know if it'd been put in one place. Guess I should look at the devwiki a bit harder or something.

Actually, now that I double check my memory, which Stronghold are you talking about? The 2001 one, or the 1992 one? 'Cause I'd really like to see the '92 one played, if only to see how it bloody works (Well, it looks awesome beside, but sitll...). Couldn't figure it out the time or two I tried to do anything with it, heh.

remove duane, francis, and norbert

So I've found the git repository, and RSS'd the changes they're making... is the documentary or discussion as to the 'why' of these changes (well, the non-strictly-mechanical-improvement changes) hidden somewhere else? Duane had a really strong theme going on, with the whole sibling rage thing. I'd be curious as to why they ditched, uh, whichever gender pronoun fits that one.

Anyway, that's the question.

I've done it before... once, maybe twice. Takes a lot of grinding :(

I'd probably recommend hitting the arenas if you haven't already cleared 'em out -- iirc, you can nab some easy-ish low-level renown off 'em. There's a SF:0 (Human scale) arena in Theles (A pin rifle or dual'd glitter pistols can usually handle it for a while), a mecha one on Caylay and whichever 'un's the Silver Knight's main spinner, and a couple more that may open up (McCabe's plot line occasionally opens one, iirc.). Then the ones I'm not remembering, heh.

Fer the villanous/chaotic stuff, you might (Might. I haven't actually tested it or anythin', heh.) have better luck in the non L5 affiliated spinners; Rishiri and, uh... Gaos? Couple other ones, maybe. The ones where the Rocket Stars do most of the mission giving. It's not a sure thing, but they might be more forgiving toward you than L5Law.

EDIT: Re: Cost; you might considering putting together a few beam weapon layouts and use them on low renown missions, to keep costs down. They're generally not as effective in GH2 (Logistic issues, surprisingly) as ammo weapons, but the upkeep's considerably less. Also, using a non-missile setup (or just setting the safety on the one's you've got for a while) can cut costs. Missile launchers are holy hell on the pocketbook.

(Actually, go for the cash. You keep getting shot up, so monies into a trainer for mecha piloting or something would probably be really helpful...)

Nothing shows, but you're typing anyway. It's fairly common wit' telnet related stuff, iirc. Just make sure you don't misspell anything :P

In other news, it turns out that haunt spam is greater than shadow dragons, tentacled monstrosities, and stone giants. Especially when there's 20+ assorted Ws and ps on the same screen. I've easily spat out >100 haunt critters on clearing that mess out... and I'm not done yet. On the bright side, Sif just decided to give me a book with summon butterflies, abjuration, and summon horrible things in it. I'm pretty much set for summoning now, heh.

EDIT: Nevermind, I guess. V:3 was utterly ridiculous. Fire giant waiting on the down stairs, norris in one spot, and teleporting away from the bastard put me right beside Mara. I'm done, tourney wise, bleh.

So, uh... outside of the vault and lair branches, which is the easiest runes to nab? I just watched some random critter open a hidden door on V:2, from which promptly spilled numerous stone giants, tentacled monstrosities, shadow dragons, etc. Naturally, th'first teleport scroll I read put me in the room they were coming from, but I managed to survive to teleport again and get the bloody hell off the level.

So. Pan, hell, abyss, etc... which would be the safest to go for? Or should I just go back to the dungeon and see if I can't get strong enough to come back and clear th'place out? I guess haunt spam (which is seven kinds of awesome) could take individual critters easily enough, but... Anyway, this is th'character:

Place two statues in the orb chamber.

They are not meant to block apportation, just to make it less effortless.
You can't skip the whole chamber outright anymore.  The statues can be
disintegrated, but in the default configuration, orb guardians will block
the line of effect.  LRD will work just fine there -- but otherwise, you'll
need to enter the actual chamber.
