It's going... well, I wouldn't say well, but I've got access to ++ in rCold, Fire, and N now... just not at the same time. I could have rCold++, rN+, and rF+ at the same time, but I'd lose either some mana or carrying limit, both which would be annoying. I have zero access to rPoision, though, which is cutting off my access from both non-slime lair branches... and I can't seem to find the bloody hive (though a gourmand amulet's helped tremendously with food.) There's probably three major spells missing (Fly, the *missile spells) and my current damage output is terribly limited; I'm basically stuck with mystic blast (which is short-ish ranged, and could stand do more damage) and fireball, which hungers me. Just got ahold of dispel undead, but the blast seems to be doing more damage anyway...

Basically, while this is the furthest I've ever gotten a crawl character, it's also the flimsiest mid-late game bugger I've played in a roguelike, which feels absolutely nerve-wracking, and I'm about 60-70% sure I've messed something up getting to this point that's going to pretty much bar the end-game to me. The loot gods pretty much hate the critter, too.

But... well. I've cleaned the lair and orc, emptied the elves down to 6, and've fumigated the dungeon down to ~D:17. Aizul's roaming around somewhere, but I haven't seen him in a while. I've got pretty good spell access, barring those utterly vital ones I can't find. Utility stuff is... alright, though I need to dump some of the lower-tier wands -- or use them up, I guess. It's not going horribly, just not as well as I'd like. At least I'm fairly sure the first major non-abjurable demon I run into's going to kill me, thus letting me free to play a decent hybrid instead. In the mean time, I'm just not really sure what to do now, besides keep pushing down into the dungeon. I just really feel like the poor bugger's pretty much hit his limit, or darn close to it.

Then again, I've felt that way since I hit the lair, I think. Heh.

EDIT: Oh, hey... artifact reaping bow. Look, look, it has rPois! Time to mess up the swamp's face with fire.

EDIT TH'TWO: Opinions people, 'cause I'm taking a break: Is this

enough to go for the decaying rune? If not, what more do I need to make the go for it?

Specced yeh for a bit, Von Krieger; are you not able to move diagonally? Dunno 'bout net tile, but you've gotta' muck around a bit in putty to get that to function. Anyway, I'd seriously suggest yeh figure out how, heh, or your chances of survival probably half, it not worse. Corners are a big thing, yeah, and you eat the same amount of time going diagonal as you do straight.

EDIT: Re: Ijyb + hobgoblin fight -- always try to fight in corridor when outnumbered. Fighting in the open should be a desperation thing, 99% of the time.

EDIT2: Anyone know if the stasis amulet blocks red wasp paralysis? Almost got murdered by one of those bloody things just now...

Check earlier in this thread. Apparently the net tiles thing works with 7.*, just a little buggily. Links and such should be... well, maybe in the first ten pages? I forget already, heh.

You filthy, dirt-bearded buggers. I've read the entire thread, raked over the wiki, and have now spent several hours playing the game. Yes, I had it downloaded before, no I didn't know you could play online.

You've got me addicted. I hope you're all satisfied.

The joy of roguelikes :P

Snap question, folks. I've apparently found the centaur filled wizlab. I have no repel/deflect missiles. Run or fight it out? (Leaning toward run.)

EDIT: Nevermind. Peeked in a bit to see what'd pop out, almost died but made it back out. Thank you, swiftness, thank you.

I... okay, so the elves apparently aren't that bad. I think my gibbering terror came from pre-stone soup, which was the last time I'd been in the place. Then, at least, E:1 was filled with freakish demon-summoning doom-elves, that ate you alive in seconds... or that's what I remember, in any case. There wasn't anything throwing 2s and 3s at me right from the start, which was kinda' a surprise...

Any recommendations for this place, as to what exactly to avoid? I've been checking the knowledge bot as I go along to determine whether something gets mystic blast or fireball (food is plentiful in here :P) to the face, and I've just realized I can fire mephetic cloud around corners, but I'm still terribly leery about this branch. What's going to be the most likely thing to violently slaughter me?

EDIT: Anyone have an idea how tough a quicksilver dragon skeleton is? The non-skele looks like it'd eat me. Haven't really figured out exactly what being skeletized does to something...

@Frumple:  There are cyclops, centaurs, and manticores in shoals, and if you're unlucky you'll find an early aquamancer or javelineer type merfolk.  It's pretty well-equipped with ranged damage dealers.  I don't really know what you can do if you have NO resistances.  Have you IDed all the random shiny/glowing armours?  Poison resistance from a non-ideal armour type might be worth the trade-off if you can still kill stuff with the casting penalties.

Well, trying that out has netted me fire +1, from a ring mail, which'll definitely help eventually. I think, anyway, heh. Thanks.

My primary damage dealer, mystic blast, is still excellent, but my higher level stuff took a success hit, which is a little unnerving -- I've relied on telecontrol fairly heavily to take out a number of uniques. It plus blink's done wonders for my survivability. No poison though, yet. I do have some resistances (now, anyway) -- I've got a RNeg+ robe (and could take it to ++, but I'd lose needles or melee) and I've got corrosion via jewelery and resist mutation 1, via mutation. Access to stasis, if I needed it.

The cyclops/manticore/centaur thing might not be that bad, but it'd depend on cover. If I can get into mephy range, they're dead, but I don't have repel missiles or its upgrade, and fireball is my longest range spell that damages enough to take that caliber of critter -- and I can't use it outside of serious emergencies, due to hunger. Blast would get me killed on th'approach, bleh. I've killed a number of each of them already, but that was with corridors to block line of fire and suchlike...

I'm already in the mines, so I'm probably going try to fireball open the entrance to elf and see what that gets me. Honestly, I half want this guy to die so I can do a few TrAE runs, or give some solid hybrid combos a chance; my survival length with melee classes, offline, has skyrocketed over the last few days. It's almost annoying how much even single spells (swiftness+troll=own) increase the power of melee classes.

I suppose I could check the shoals... is electric eels the worst range threat before merfolk start popping up? Elf has multiple blaster-elves sitting right at the entrance, and their dakka makes it way, way too risky for my squishy wizard; I hit half health probably three times trying to lure something upstairs to slaughter. As for shops, I've fully explored everything I can, down to about D:17 and everything in Lair and Orc that doesn't require digging, and the only shop's been a single food store, which I bought out. This bugger's been having abs'lute crap luck for equipment, I guess. Decent book access though, or at least better than I normally have.

Thanks for th'advice, heh.

EDIT: Though checking the knowledge bot, the elves do seem to have pretty low hp scores... maybe I'll haste up and spam fireball a bit, pray they leave corpses to eat afterwards...

My utter lack of notable resistances continues to stymie my poor wizard. Are there any branches that aren't a horrific deathtrap without resistances, barring the mines and the lair (Already hit bottom on both)? I really don't want to kamikaze the poor bugger...

Blyxx man, congrats. Got th'orb! Your EV/SH scores are freaking insane when you've got agility and divine shield going. Crazy doom midget is crazy awesome.

Also woah. Nodghis aren't in the knowledge bot database, or on the wiki. Wonder what they are...

EDIT: And he's out! The champion's first win!

I'd probably recommend keeping a great spiked club around for hydras; between TSO's halo +hit and his shield, you'd probably be able to survive long enough to kill th'buggers. I usually try to start pumping up maces wit' my trolls that get to unarmed 10 or so (Not that that happens very often ::)), just 'cause those clubs hit so bloody hard. Just avoiding them also works a'ight, if it's possible. Swiftness would help tremendously there, and it's probably low enough level a melee spec'd troll could manage to nab it, providing you can find a book. Starting off as crusader (or enchanter/AE/AM, maybe more) would help there :P

Does anyone have the numbers of exactly how much TSO's halo helps, though? It's was pretty noticeable with the minotaurs I was running offline (net was down majority of th'day, bleh) today. I'm guessing it's just a renamed corona (which would be somewhere between 2 and 9), but if the bonus is more that'd be wonderful...

Condensation shield... is it worth getting it for a squishy wizard? I could really stand another defense boost, and being able to train up shields while still using my lajatangs would be great... but I'unno how effective the spell is, having never used it. Character's way too far into the game to be experimenting, too :(

Could try macroing it to .

Or changing the key-somethin'-or-other, though I dun really remember/bothered to find out how to do that.

Amusingly, I had the opposite problem, heh. Shift-num5 wouldn't long rest.

Also, is the putty stuff set up right? Keyboard set to nethack, et al?

I'm stopping for the day: No death-gest, because the wizard still lives, somehow.

But I need advice. I'm having a heck of a time not starving to death, and not being able to dip into the heavier, hungrier artillery is very annoying. I think I've finally found the entrance to the hive (D:15, which also has some naga unique, A-somethingorother, wandering around it), but I have no poison resistance. I have no anything resistance, except for a point of MR via robe which doesn't really count. And corrosion, I guess, which helps right now less than the MR counts.

This is the character:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I also have access to these books
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
but they're a fair distance away. Only have one level worth of memorization open, anyway.

Is the cloud enough to risk raiding the hive for food? What's the better option? Anything I'm doing horrifically wrong?

The longer you are there the more chance of evil coming to get you. Mostly just because the developers did not like mummy character staying there FOREVER and leveling on simple things.

Yeah... wish they'd just mitigated XP gain per kill after a certain point instead. I've spent enough time with non-mummy characters to trigger the start of the OOD increase just trying to clear an entrance to the level below :(

Supposedly, though, if you manage to survive the OOD critters, they just stop genning after a certain point, so there's a light at the end of the tunnel... sorta.

If it weren't for mephetic cloud, about 75% of the uniques I've killed would have slaughtered me. Hopefully I'll find one of the higher tier confusion effects (Well, I've got the book for mass confusion, but I need an upgraded cold spell first.) before I start running into poison resistant casters. Pikel's not that bad compared to stuff that'll spew flaming(/freezing/electrifying/banishing/etc.) death at you if they're not confused...

Agreed with the gnolls, though, especially when they come in packs. They tend to kill me more than non-classed orcs. It's probably because they like to tote two-handed weapons, which can hit like a bloody brick. The occasional reaching polearm just makes things worse :P
