General Discussion / Re: Things that made you mildly upset today thread

House person actually went through with getting a puppy. It's, well. It's not great. No one in this house really has it in them to properly care for or train a puppy. The three of us together, don't. It's already starting to be a problem (it's showing signs of having started to learn to piss and shit on the carpet instead of, y'know. Not that.), and it's going to only get worse 'cause it's a young pit bull breed, i.e. not going to be small, is going to be heavy and strong (which I can mostly deal with, but no one else in the house can). Just... bloody hell.

Pretty sure I'm going to nickname it Bi (said bee) as short for Bad Idea :-\

Huh. So it's saltybet, but D&D encounter tables. I can dig it.

If it makes yeh feel any better, the "some to all of them will probably die and the mother may eat them" spiel has already been given at least once :P

In unrelated wtfery, you know that thing you can do to dogs/cats where you lightly touch their ear and it'll twitch and if you do it long enough they'll probably start actively scratching?

If you want to know how to do the equivalent of that to a cataloging librarian, donate their library a dvd that is only supposed to have the one dvd, but still has DISC 1 on the disc.

Though, uh, if you haven't already you might want to check your residence's pet policy? It'd suck to have that four weeks cut short due to an irate landlord equivalent finding out you had adorable fuzzballs pooping all over one of their rooms, or for you to get hit with a mandatory cleaning fine when you leave or somethin'.

Cloud potential minimum height is just ground level, tho' (fog!), so it's conceptually possible for cloud originating manrain to not leave a horrible guro mess. It just wouldn't be much of a rain if you were going to avoid brusing and whatnot, heh. As anyone who's fell out of a bed or tripped and fallen can attest, it really does not take far at all to hurt a person.

Alternatively, no one ever says it has to be human men. Could be a bunch of slime boys falling from heaven; they go splat, sure, but they get better! Bonus(?) points you end up with a bunch of shapeshifters literally made of lube :V

Hadn't even seen it yet, heh. My RR search filter is basically "gimme everything over 200 pages", sometimes with the litrpg tag added... and I've tended to avoid anything on RR with the sexual content warning, ha (there's been exceptions, but I've found there's no better, more consistent, indicator there's going to be something horribly wrong with a work on RR than that). I'll go ahead and toss it into the tab pile, tho'.

e: Anyway, Blacksmith of the Apocalypse. Casual 105k words. System apocalypse, crafter(-ish; they've arguably had more impact setting things on fire with smithing kit so far) person, writing okay, plot pretty slow/low-impact! MC still hasn't actually met anyone else from their home planet, ha. Made early, fairly immediate from reader perspective (though time-skipped, so for MC a few weeks), decision to promptly bugger off the death world his home planet had become, which is pretty unusual for these types of things.

Any case, feels like it's not even to a particularly interesting point yet and just starting to clear the setup period. Into the RSS feed it goes!

That's Dead Tired down. Slim 98k words, the tl;dr is tweed suited Vecna with a fondness for bad puns runs roughshod over the world, murders the gods, and then decides to take a nice long nap. Cue two thousand years later when rando adventurer wakes them up (and gets grafted with a large, opposite gender, cat, ultimately flipping their expression to "maid") and they find out the world has genre shifted from system enabled D&D expy to system-disconnected xianxia, leading magic bone daddy on a vaguely bemused jaunt to figure out what exactly happened while they were napping.

Pretty fluffy for something with a three plus figure body count in under a hundred thousand words. Writing's overall okay, occasionally amusing enough. Be interesting to see where it goes in the future, ha.

Found out that, while a kraken can't really damage even a low level platinum dragon, they can, apparently, swallow one whole. Whoops.

I'd honestly been thinking about the "Government entering the industry as a stabilizing entity" for a while now, and I think the largest problems are:

1. How do you go about deciding which industries and which products/services are essential enough to warrant the government's direct entry and interference.
I mean. Other questions are more discussion I'm too tired for, but that one's pretty damn easy? If people die, get crippled, or end up impoverished/homeless without it, that's a target. So food, housing/utilities, healthcare, transportation/education, probably general environmental/ecological stuff, military/whatever-your-equivalent-to-law-enforcement-is. Y'know. Essential, like in the word essential :P

Stuff even the US gov already intervenes in, just half-assed and/or captured by relevant industries a lot of the time.

It might (and sounds like) be something more specific than just a hobby as a general thing? Something getting lost in translation or summation. 'Cause that sounds more like a limit on hobby groups or after school programs or somethin' along those lines than some kind of you-can't-knit-and-handegg-only-one thing.

And, like, limiting how much group stuff the folks in society least capable of following basic precautions is getting up to isn't really that bad of an idea, in the abstract, y'know? Implementation sounds like it might be sorta' scuffed, tho'.

Really?

Laptops have been USB ONLY for the past 5 years, at least.
I mean, I guess? Last year was the first time I got (or interacted with, for that matter) a new-ish laptop in like a decade or somethin'. One I had before was still running Vista. Laptops at work are old HP rigs, too -- they still have dvd drives, I think. So it came as a surprise to me; I hadn't noticed it wasn't there and everything else I've been around had the things.

Hoo, usb cassette player thing's, like. Working. Audacity's doing its thing. Sound's coming in pretty clean. Glen Miller's doing some authentic 1990 cassette tape swing, Girl in Kalamazoo into Tuxedo Junction, Basie's Dance of the Gremlins comin' after. Neat shit, these tapes are apparently nearing the end of their shelf life...

E: Y'know, I don't think I'd ever actually heard Miller's cover of Rhapsody in Blue. It's pretty good!

... y'know, I've had this laptop for, like. A year. And I just now noticed it doesn't have a built in DVD player.

Futa Fix Dick Dine and Dash. Ouch.  :o
I mean... congrats to whoever the dev/publishers are for that, I guess? It's pretty impressive to have a noteable best seller when you're peddling somethin' like that.
