General Discussion / Re: ♪ The Great Music Thread ♫
« on: October 09, 2020, 08:53:38 pm »
The band is Apoptygma Berzerk, "Norwegian Futurepop" apparently.  Jeez the CD I had, Welcome To Earth, was released in 2000...  Couldn't have been more than a year or two old when we got it.  Dad was way into trance back then, but I preferred stuff like this that was a bit more compact and hinted at a story.  Though nonvocal electronica was great coding music.
Huh, been a while since I seen that name (well, outside the music files that've been following me around for years). Listened to it a fair bit back in high school, if I'm not misremembering. Pretty sure I initially ran into them via AMVs, ha. Not super keen on them anymore (I still got one or two of their songs lingering in my old music junkpile), but it's still pretty listenable. Quick check and I think it was Non-stop Violence I remember from 'em. Quick check also shows that wow that indeed sounds like it was from decades go now :V

Any case, I'm still not quite sure exactly what the overarching genre shivelight highlights, but damn if I don't like whatever the hell it is (that particular one being Skope -- Beneath). Downtempo, global/tribal stuff, seems to be the most common shared designations.

... frankly the stuff's largely very, very obviously drug music, but it's still right to my tastes. Day to day work music's mostly been just pulling up that channel and letting it go.

Curry powder in cream of chicken soup with some cheese and honey turkey is damn good.

Got some curry powder a bit ago to see if the grandparent that shouldn't be eating salt or much potassium (i.e. the most common salt replacement) liked it, since then I've been putting it in/on basically everything I've ate. It's been pretty good, biggest flub was on mac & cheese + mashed potatoes (I super like the texture that results from mixing those), and I'm mostly sure that was more due to the potatoes than anything -- it was still edible enough, just somehow even blander than when made without it.

I'm understanding better why curry is apparently pretty popular in places.

Are we sure it's not just Dio? There's apparently time shenanigans going on, and by all indications Zoss is a bit of an ass, so... maybe it's actually Dio.

...

... actually, the series ending with everyone ripping off a series of masks revealing themselves to be the next person in line until everyone turns out to be the same person would fit pretty well, wouldn't it?

Someone cheeky over at thorndike slipped a 666 into the isbn of a book of christian fiction dealing with the rapture. For those that want to see it, have a link to a random library in Kansas that apparently has the exact edition in their catalog: http://catalog.tscpl.org/polaris/search/title.aspx?ctx=1.1033.0.0.5&pos=1&cn=1080951

Huh. Biden victory fund thing is legit offering "truth over flies" fly swatters. Someone's on top of things, apparently.

... currently says they're sold out, though.

Part of me's curious what the hell he's doing to render him unable to register something landing in his hair. I've had flies and such land on my head before and that shit is super noticeable, but I've seen other folks seemingly not, occasionally.

Is it just another side effect of hair spray or whatever?

Slay the Spire downfall mod. Endless mode, certain future, guardian, just ascension 1, but still. Stasis engines (Play 3 zero cost cards, get 1 energy, draw one -- one upgraded and thus innate, two more unupgraded in deck), mummified hand, dead branch. Lots of crystal shivs and wards. It was happening occasionally before the end of the first round, but by act 3 take two... I'm infinite, turn one. Every fight since one in the second cycle act 1. Not only do I not run out of energy or cards, I'm massively energy positive by the time the second or third stasis engine gets in play (helped along by a couple +energy bauble beams).

And it's, like. Scaling infinite, so it still wrecks time eater. Plenty of block, strength and dex goes up between kunai and shuriken and momentary boosts+artifact charges. Crystal beam (scales with socketed gems) and well over a dozen socketed gems. This has gotten delightfully silly. It's like a mummified hand/dead branch silent shiv deck, except all your backflips and whatnot also give you shivs.

Kalpa, kalpa... a looped kalpa is a kappa, making the whole thing an extremely long form twitch joke.

With this in mind, the giant dong floating over jaggy's head on the new book cover makes more sense.

Sounds pretty close to those old jezz ball/Qix type games, tbh, if you were looking for similar gameplay. It's been a while since I've seen one of those made, but I wouldn't be surprised at all if they're still being produced occasionally.

94% Socialist
93% Green
92% Peace and Freedom
91% Democratic
90% Transhumanist
49% Libertarian
16% Republican
16% Constitution

Yeah, that... isn't a surprise, save maybe that it seems to be suggesting peace and freedom and transhumanist are actual political parties. If they are I hadn't noticed :V
I like how almost every forum member is a green socialist hipie. Until we boot up DF that is. There we rob the first elven caravan, proceed to burn the surface world with magma, and send any migrants we dislike to the atom smasher.
I mean, day before yesterday, in a game I've been playing recently I murdered hundreds of people trying to defend their home from an invading force, and hundreds more trying to rebel against a totalitarian criminal gang that seized the local government.

These are not things I'd do, recommend, encourage, or accept as reasonable in real life, under most any circumstances. A game is, in fact, a game, and not only is there nothing unusual or contradictory in holding beliefs and to behaviors at odds with those incentivized in games, I'd hope to every fucking hell imaginable most people would hold beliefs and to behaviors at odds with the omnicidally sociopathic horseshit games tend to reward :P

... that said, I think the actual worst I've ever done in DF was way back in the day I lined an entire map (except the road in) with serrated disk traps. Migrating animals kept getting their feet chopped off, which was pretty unkind. Never really got into the world flooding, caravan ransacking, migrant squishing stuff, though.

... what the hell does it mean when it says excel couldn't handle the large numbers? Excel trivially handles digits larger than the world's population, much less the UK's.

Man, that Salazar thing is getting weirder. Sultan attempt is turning out odd/interesting, in any case. I've taken over pretty much the entirety of twinluna from the Nasir (after everyone except the horse guys and the thur went and declared war on me with no provocation or, with the dhib and dahkn, even any interaction whatsoever) extremely early (like 2-3 months in, with an army that can take their functionally undefended towns but would get whooped if they sent even one character) and they're just... not responding to it. They didn't send help when I sequentially sieged all but two of their twinluna towns (which the horse fellows snuck before I got to them). They haven't sent anything in the week or two since I took the last town in the area.

I'm guessing what's happening is they're actually tied up with some fight in one of the other regions and basically had bigger problems that a one character faction with all of fourteen or so squads (versus their 7+ characters and 200+ squads :P), which would make for some amazing accidental opportunism (oops, one random hick with a passel of half baked mercs and a few other things just stole half your empire lol) from me, but... still.

Feels almost buggy, like the AI considers me so little of a threat it's not worth taking the cities back from me. And, like. Fairness where it's due. I have less than twenty sub level 20 squads, several unpromoted, and all of a single hero character (albeit one that's got absolutely brutal AoE -- the mechanist skill tree is pretty damn vicious and will only get nastier if I ever figure out how to build the friggin' library) that hasn't even hit the level cap. I absolutely am not an actual threat relative to the established factions, yet.

Becoming one's coming along a lot faster when I'm raking in 2k(+, considering caravans) money and hundreds of iron and wood per income period thanks to having yoinked half the nasir's empire, though :V

Your gut doesn't really track. People face consequences for anti-truth nonsense on the regular, from social rejection (job loss, etc., which the states being the pile of flaming shit that it is very much endangers reliable shelter and food) to hospitalization or death, and that happening to the folks in question doesn't snap them (or their fellows that witness one way or another) out of it particularly often.

Likely enough to result in people doubling down on it, even.

But yeah, it's 110% not the internet or social media or anything modern to begin with. That sort of shite is about as old as the written word, that we know of. If modern trappings are doing anything, it's the persistent effect of just making it easier to notice if you feel like looking. Less trouble to find out your neighbor's a raving nutjob when they're screeching it out on a public platform for all the world to see.
