General Discussion / Re: Things that made you go "WTF?" today o_O

The appropriate response is to play loud, ear-rapey noise into the phone.
I've held the damn phone up to a speaker blaring literal noise music for repeated pickups. Didn't work. The only appropriate response is to not engage with the pieces of shit at all.

For someone who's used to buying stuff on the phone I can see how if they got dementia then they're more likely to do that, but for me that would be the most unnatural concept of the planet. Like, talking to a person and doing stuff that way: very unnatural.
There's more to it than buying stuff off the phone, though. Money orders or banking junk gets involved, too -- if these shits have someone talking to them that doesn't want to give money over the phone, they talk the person into sending something in the mail or directly wiring the money. Again, the only correct interaction is no interaction.

Block list can help a little, though, sure. Just don't expect it to be super consistent. Apparently the sacks of shit that do this crap have ways to get around the blocking :-\

Mate, I'm literally telling you from personal fucking experience that only sometimes works like you think it will work, and only some scammers have the behavior pattern you're describing. Add that knowing someone is on the line and willing to talk is straight up valuable information to them and, again, what you're talking about is only sometimes going to get the results you're thinking it will.

It's also a terrible fucking habit to get into. Multiple people I know that have been scammed, and defrauded of hundreds to thousands of dollars, said they were going to do the exact same thing you're suggesting. It ended up with them scammed, because these are pieces of human shit that literally make their living talking people into performing incredibly poor actions. If you're mentally adept right now enough to not get entrapped, there's no guarantee you will remain so as you age, or if you happen to be drunk or some shite, and then you're out some chunk of your bank account.

The right action with these fucks is to not engage. Not now, not ever. Make it a habit to not fucking engage, not now, not ever. Do not assume they cannot convince you otherwise now and every time they try again in the future, just assume, rightly, they should not be talked to and then do not talk to them. Period.

Depends on the scammer, actually, and if you're living alone or not. Would that wasting their time one day be enough to make the sacks of shit stop harassing people. If goddamn only that were sufficient.

Realistically, the only thing that approaches consistently effective is to just not fucking engage. If it's not a number you know, don't answer. If a scammer starts talking, just hang the hell up. Talking at all gives them information they can use or re-sell, so just don't.

They're definitely still distributing in at least some areas. Last few we got here were notably smaller, tho'. From, well, phone book size down to probably 2/3rds to a half one.

They're also just... not as useful as they used to be, even discounting internet stuff. Lots of people simply don't have landlines and the phone book doesn't tend to list cell, so their basic (ostensible) purpose isn't even as fulfilled. Still decent enough for finding official numbers of import, city hall, major local businesses, etc., if for whatever reason you can't access the number online.

Eh, memetic infection is literally straight out of mythos inspired sci-fi. I've seen the concept more than once, beings that spread or influence just by being known, and it's not like it's far off of a thought from real world stochastic terrorism. A malignant AI running social engineering or just real damn good propaganda to bring down worlds or subvert military isn't particularly out there. Can go into cyber or wetware hacking, but it's not exactly necessary. Could be interesting grounds for subversion, too, the non-AI (or maybe just non-hostile AI, if you don't want to go full artificial sentient xenophobia route) actually brainjacking their forces to prevent conversion.

This is very much exaggerated. And I know some later authors do this too, but if you look at original stuff, most stories, if they have a monster, have a monster that is notable for its strangeness or the relation it has to the protagonist, not for a high power level.
Most of the stories are, sure. But there's also things crawling around that are world enders, with indication (though I'm less sure explicit statement) even from lovecraft 'imself that some of the critters (ala Azathoth) might be capable of just more or less deleting reality. Include stuff beyond lovecraft and you're very much dealing with a setting where you're probably able to deal with a lot of things but you're also hoping real hard you don't wake up any of the big'uns, 'cause there just ain't nothing you, your species, and possibly the local galactic cluster can do if they turn active.

Probably not even a majority? The only ones of the major four that sorta' tracks with lovecraft is maybe tzeentch in general and some of the body horror aspects of slaanesh. There's mythos style tropes at play with some of the forbidden knowledge mess but they're definitely not what I'd call major (and more "psyker" than chaos, prolly).

Khorne and nurgle are pretty not lovecraftian, imo, and the general theme of the chaos gods as a thing is like the exact opposite of a mythos divinity, fairly explicitly arising from the psyche and whatnot of sentients. The elder gods and old ones an' crap are like the overt antithesis of that general concept, heh. They're closer to the star gods/c'tan or whatever's driving the 'nids, and even those don't really super track well to mythos critters compared to other tropes.

... that said, going a strong mythos route for something like chapter master could be kinda' interesting. Probably sorta' unpleasant to actually play 'cause there'd be a lot of "whoops, opened the wrong box and something ate the galaxy", but I could see some folks going for it. I've seen fiction off and on try to run with that sort of concept -- a more or less human organization/nation/whatever aware of and trying to function in very mythos settings -- and it can be pretty interesting... just very hard to do well, 'cause the default state of non-mythos beings in a mythos setting is "hyperfucked on every level", including levels that don't exist until a mythos being decides to invent it to wreck something.

So this is apparently on steam now?

Going to give it a look, I think, but that 67 gig initial download is mildly daunting :-\

I mean, it mostly just sucks. I've been more or less resigned to the plague killing one or both of my grandparents for a while now. They're not really doing enough to isolate and, of course, the area I'm in is doing basically fuckall to mitigate infection, schools opening to in-person next week, churches doing in person congregation and everything. Like half the local assisted living type joints in the county are already fucking plague pits, don't even talk about the prisons. So on and so forth.

So far as what do goes, you just... do what you can, whatever that may be. Hope it doesn't kill family or friends, but expect it. Maybe there's something you can do to help with potential funerary concerns or making sure wills are in order. If there's something you can send to them they might like -- music, letters, whatever -- then maybe consider it. If you have the energy or resources or whatever to protest or harangue the fuckers in charge that are inevitably dropping the ball, it probably can't hurt much (well, protest might with the police riots going on but eh).The

Hope your gma makes it through, rol :(

Don't some of the underwater ones, too? Could swear I remember that being so in D4 at a minimum (one of the shade summoning ones got extra nice shadow junk from underwater provinces), and I'd assume it carried over to D5...

Though I guess that might not be nation specific, exactly, I'unno. But place of summoning might factor in, too.

Heh. Well, upside to public work if you're full time (or maybe just in a less shit place than me, I'unno). Part time public work your benefits are, uh. Maybe fairly flexible hours and not working for overt pieces of corporate shite :V

... but that's it. No medical, no PTO, no vacation accruing, etc. It's not actually that bad overall for the shithole I live in, but it's not exactly great, either. Good thing I'm mostly doing it just to make family feel better, ha.

... we don't disenfranchise the insane in the US, though? Or more specifically, most states that have laws on the subject only if legally judged to be incompetent/of unsound mind, which is generally a pretty high bar. Hugely higher bar than a felony count or prison time, anyway.

It also looks like there's several more states that refuse to disenfranchise the insane for reasons of mental issues (I saw six skimming through a write up of general state laws on the subject before I stopped counting) than there are for reasons of felony (only two), so... US is actually better on that front than they are about disenfranchising felons.

Absolutely though, everybody gets the goddamn vote, be it felon or asylum patient. Drop the age limit while you're at it. If your country can't function with its criminals, crazies, and older children voting there's something seriously fucking wrong with it and you got bigger problems than who you're enfranchising.

Oof. Yeah, ambulance is usually four digits by itself, iirc, so unless you somehow got insurance that actually isn't shit it's probably going to hurt. There might be some kind of assistance program available, though, and almost certainly installment type options you can negotiate with the hospital.

I mean... if you're worried and have somewhere exposed to the air you can stick it, maybe get a small generator? Just to keep the fridge running, more or less. Dunno what kind of living space you got and it ain't really viable in most apartments, but...

Awoo's just 1231515 as a number. No need to get complicated. Awooawoo would seem to come out to 7.1530754743836039524824614648917925644828824637906 × 10^7500467, going by lazy wolframming. It's many, many awoos.
