Yeah, not really. Remember 200 years ago people didn't generally have to go work for 8 hours leaving their houses unattended while their kids were also mandatorily required to go to school. People who had wealth back then generally did have armed guards, and poorer people lived in extended families and/or their home was their workplace. Without police people are going to have to really take home security into their own hands.
Haha holy shit, wait a second, you think police actually help much or at all with home security now?

I can't tell if it's a joke or you've just never had the chance to get something stolen from your home before. Cops aren't particularly good for deterrence or retrieval on that front, from what I've seen. Having your neighborhood (and/or surrounding ones) not be a fucking ruin is your better bet there :V

'course, once mods get in it's just a matter of building an instant hellevator item and poof, done :P

But yeah, lacking QoL improvements like that, bombing straight down is absolutely the fastest way to make a hellevator prior to having, like, lunar tier pickaxes or the mining drill mount thing or somethin'. Maybe even still then, the mining mount is kinda' shitty in vanilla, tbh. There's mods (well, for 1.3.5) that significantly increase its digging speed, and it's pretty nice.

I mean, apparently the majority of the ones in question don't actually live in the city, so. It's kind of an "even if they do, it's someone else's problem" sorta' thing.

Interim they can probably request aid from state or federal organizations, though. Might not be an improvement in the short term but it's questionable it'll make things worse. Stateside it's not unknown for folks' general welfare to get better with the cops pack it in and go home, ha.

I do wonder how that is going to work in practice though. Who are people going to call when they get robbed, or when their child gets raped? Ghostbusters?
Hell, even odds ghostbusters would do about as much good, so, uh.

Nevermind how common it is to just not get the cops involved in either of those to begin with, due to how largely fucking useless (at best) they'd be in either case :-\

Probably not? Chrono Cross just had a stupidly large cast of playable characters, so it had more of an issue with that sort of thing than more constrained games did.

It's not the only PS1 era game with huge cast lists (sup suikoden), but it probably had other considerations to work with, too (being 3d, for one).

Stealing commanders with air transports will forever the Best Thing, I think. First you steal it, then you drive it straight into the biggest concentration of enemy stuff and Boom, hohoho.
Didn't know you could do that. What happens if you self-destruct your air transport while it's carrying the enemy commander?
It's been a while, but iirc it still goes boom :P

Suiciding your own commander like that is also a thing you can do in some circumstances, heh. It usually didn't really, uh, help. But it was great when it did.

Haha, D-gun goes brrrr.
Getting past the d-gun always was the biggest problem, yeah. Still, it was possible, and when it worked... just perfection.

I've played a vhs tape within the last year, even checking to make sure it still worked before sending it back to the branch library it belonged to :V

Some folks still have vhs players and no DVD access, stateside. Not many, but enough the libraries I'm working with keep some tapes around. Still see occasional circulation, amazingly.

But yeah, if you can get them working definitely check out the mods. Iirc one of the big ones added ubiquitous gigantic artillery and it was great :P

I must admit I am highly jealous of the South European protests that managed to -- or at least made a basic attempt to -- mind social distancing. Sweden's protests didn't.
Hell, for what it's worth, from what I've noticed many of the protests here in the states tried to, as well. Usually right up until the chemical weapons and assault started coming at them, then things broke down a bit.

Huh. I almost bought War Wind the other day. Can't seem to get it to work at all, so I guess it's good I didn't.

Unrelated, but I'm having a problem with the GOG standalone installers(I don't use GOG Galaxy). There's no text on any buttons, or the checkmark for saying you read the EULA. While it's simple enough that I can run it without text, it's kind of annoying.
You'd want the sequel, anyway :P

Pretty neat game, if kinda' janky to play. That said I'd definitely expect either to have trouble running in modern systems. Good luck figuring things out if you give it another go, though.

E: Oh, wait, just noticed it's going for free. Nice, ha.

(The big boss is named Risky Boots, anyone know the PC's name?)
Shantae, heh. The name of the series is the name of the main PC.

I mean, dude reacted to "people in front of me" with "guess I'll keep going, then". Maybe he wasn't trying to be as murderous as he could have been but "accident" goes out the window when you're driving towards a crowd of people.

Aren't we very likely going to have a second seasonal wave again in the winter anyway?  Or is the concern more about the severity of the wave?

I mean - I don't get worried about the annual waves of seasonal flu.  Is there a reason I need to be worried about the seasonal waves of Coronavirus?
god damn fucking hell this virus is like ten fucking times deadlier than our seasonal flu strains

That is your fucking reason to be worried about seasonal waves of the crow plague, holy shit.

Our seasonal flu strains also kill tens of thousands annually just in the goddamn US, that we don't treat it more seriously is a fucking condemnation for our nation, not a reason to try to downplay something significantly more deadly than them.

Speccing my archer MC with some brawler/fist skill finally paid off. Last fight of an arena attempt, me and my dopey ass pickups in mostly iron armor and crap versus a team decked out in entirely mythril kit, kinda' rough to begin with, but we doin' alright, hanging in there, starting to make gains -- one of the asshole enemies promptly breaks like half my team's weapons and proceeds to try to beat my captain to death with a mythril flail.

But it's okay. Cat person ship captain promptly spends the next three turns after their bow got broken just beating. The. Shit. Out of weapon breaking flail man with their bare catman paws. End of second turn they even triggered their counter push, knocking dead man flailing even further away from the remaining fighters, apparently just so catcaptain could finish them off personally. Which they do.

So we win, after my archer catcaptain beat a man to (near) death bare handed.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I mean, if it's too much to ask for cops to stop shooting people in the face with rubber bullets as a prerequisite for the protests to stop, I guess they can just keep going until that stops being too much of an ask. If it's too much for a murderer and their accomplices to be cuffed, then I guess it keeps going until it stops being too much. Doesn't seem to be much else in the way of options, really, unless getting brutalized for peaceful protest and murder/assisting murder getting shoved under a rug is what you want the future to continue to be.

Dialog's going to have a hard time starting until the response to attempts at dialog stops being chemical attacks and assault, though. Oddly enough, some people seem to have figured that one out, and shit tends to be a lot tamer in those areas.

What's the de-escalation plan for the protesters?  Have they even indicated the things that would make them stop protesting / rioting?

I mean something practical, not just "we want justice!"  What do they want other than just having the perpetrators put in jail?  If that won't appease them, what will?  I don't think a public execution is a realistic demand, even though I'm sure that what some people want.
Well, if the police would stop brutalizing and murdering people it'd probably be a good start. So the tear gas, pepper spray, rubber bullets, and vehicular assault stopping would be a good starting point. Could work on proper prosecution for the murderer and his accomplices that kicked this latest batch of protests off, too, maybe -- that seems to be the major call for Minneapolis in particular, they don't just want the direct murderer they want the fuckers who sat there and helped him, too. Then cleaning up police in general, really. Disbanding precincts that have problems (which might be all of them I'unno :V) and replacing them wholesale might be a good step 1.

Really, if you want to appease the protesters shit is pretty damn straightforward. Put the boot to the jackboot thugs in uniform terrorizing communities and maiming/murdering people with near impunity, get economic relief for areas in serious trouble. None of this had to happen, and if you remove or mitigate the underlying causes (shit lives, bastard cops making them worse) it can stop. If you're more interested in brutalizing and maiming protesters, well, it can keep going I guess.
