... probably not the ultralisk, unless we're doing a starcraft/D&D crossover here.

Which, I mean. Maybe? I think I've read something like that before, either zerg or nids or summat hitting forgotten realms land, something in that general direction. There's potential there, zerg et al are nasty creatures but most D&D settings are friggin' death worlds, so...

Soldering irons solder, like, metal. Among other things. Yes, they'll cauterize flesh. You have to be pretty careful when using them or you can hurt yourself fairly badly.
We're joking about burning through a portion of our brains by jamming a soldering iron through the side. I'm not sure "be pretty careful", or even "be any amount careful at all", fits with that.
That would be the stealth joke, yes. As opposed to the less stealthy one about the inefficiency of soldering irons for cauterization.

How to know when someone's trying too hard to curry favor: They bring you a "gift" of dozens of human heads.

Honestly, it's stuff like that that's much of why I keep reading shlock isekai et al shite. Most of the time you feel like you should probably regret it (even if you don't, really), and then occasionally you hit authors that are so bad it wraps around to being kinda' okay*, like this abe the wizard thing. 96 chapters in, still not a wizard, but someone just gave the MC a pile of human heads!

* and I guess even more occasionally you just find one that's plain ol' okay without the need to be carried by absurdity or people bludgeoning each other with rivers or somethin'.

E: This one also has a thing where they casually mention this item or that item is made with orc skin, where in the setting orcs are fully sentient, intelligent people who also form a coalition of subraces to create one of the strongest nations on the planet.

Folks, when your people idly use what amounts to human skin as a common, if high end, crafting material, I think you might be on the side of the bad guys. Just throwing that one out there.

You'd probably want something else if you were looking to burn shut a wound, though. Most soldering irons don't have much surface area on the heating element, so doing anything like that with one would be... inefficient.

Heh. County near-ish me finally got around to starting to test a local prison -- their confirmed covid cases promptly duodecupled, more or less. Went from sub 5 to over 50 over the course of a weekend. Near as I can tell, they might have tested more people behind the bars than on their streets at this point. Not sure who that's less comforting for, though, the people inside the plague pit or the people down the road from it...

Really is a sort of microcosm of both how fucked the prisons are and how abandoned the population in general in a lot of places stateside is, though :-\

Oh man I feel for you people.

I was just watching news on TV here and they played a clip of Trump talking about a vaccine. Except not a normal vaccine, it's going to be the most amazingest most awesomest vaccine in literally all of history according to Trump. Nobody's ever done making a vaccine as good as Trump's buddies, who are totally killing the vaccine-making thing like never before.

Man I feel for you people having to put up with that stuff every day.
For what remarkably little it's worth, many people just don't listen when the shitgibbon starts talking. I tend to just leave the room if I can't change the channel equivalent, personally -- if it's something important I'll find a transcript later. It's still generally pretty painful to read, mind, but at least it doesn't involve hearing the con-man shitbabble, too.

*shrugs* I've got both native american and jew in me, too, some not too far back. For what that's worth. I'm not particularly irate about what looks a fair bit like downplaying basically destroying entire continents, plural, of civilizations, but I can see where it might irk someone :P

Most of their point just seems to be that holodomor was not, in fact, the greatest genocide in all of history.

More or less, yeah. Can't remember if it tends to use the recent average or just the last year more often, though. Most areas I'm aware of that have that data are showing some pretty concerning numbers either way, iirc.

I mean, it was literally created as an excuse for the artist/author to make porn. There's comedy, and cosmic horror, and other stuff, and overall it's pretty great in a lot of ways, but it's pretty much explicitly explicit pornography that was created with the intent of being exactly that. One of the reasons I don't link to oglaf despite occasionally mentioning it. It's a pretty clear cut violation of the forum's guidelines to do so :-\

Comparing pictures from the factory and historic ones, is that age[1] or illness or... someonething else causing the jowelly differences?  I mean, how long can they have to search for someone who looks sorta-like him in the event of ever needing one, given that Saddam had a brace or more moustachioed lookee-likees on his payroll already.

It does not taste like avocados.
If I had a dollar for every time I've heard someone say something like that and be wrong, I'd be able to go and get a few extra meals that didn't have any goddamn onions in them :P

Quarantine cooking is probably going to have some interesting stuff come out of it over the next year or so, though. I guess it's one of the few potential silver linings of the crow plague.

Because other than a source of income they do not exist to the government, because even if you leave prison as a felon you cannot vote.
Eh, for what little it's worth, franchise for felons or ex-felons is one of those things that vary by state. Iirc there's at least two that allow voting for people still imprisoned, and a majority restore franchise at some point, good handful immediately on release (though that doesn't always involve re-registering as well, apparently). Permanent disenfranchisement isn't the norm for the country as a whole, at this point, and even for those that still have it, tends to be limited to certain crimes.

Mind, that's still pretty fucked up -- there should be precious goddamn few things that warrant removal of the right to vote, and incarceration alone damn sure isn't one of them -- but it's not as fucked up as you're portraying.

Wait, is that 4.6 or 46 dollars? Bit over $2 USD a pound isn't actually hugely out of line with what we see for middle-ish price range meat in the US. If it's for bottom barrel quality that's like... double, ish. Sugar looks like it's somewhere in the $0.50 per lbs range, or 90-ish cents per kg.

Though yeah now I notice that minimum wage, nevermind. Looks like price might be the same but average earning relatively fucking cratered, you couldn't manage shit stateside at seven bucks USD a month. I could see ways to not straight up starve on just that budget (cheapass staples ala pack ramen and sod all else), but it wouldn't be easy and good bloody luck doing anything except not starving.

I mean, yeah, there's some limited stuff like that, mostly for kids/students going on where I'm at, and some (non-profit/etc.) food bank junk that's been on-going since Michael fucked up the region, but nothing like apparently regular free meals to folks in general coming from anything governmental. Nothing even close. Florida's just pretty fucked up on the assistance front, from what I understand.
