They key thing here is striking a balance - and unfortunately I don't think anyone knows what that point of balance is.
I mean, actually we fucking know what that point is. Around a 2% positivity rate for testing and testing aggressive enough to not miss anyone, on top of stringent quarantine for infected and the means to do so without losing home or hearth, plus solid protection for workers on the job both in terms of equipment and behavior of them and any members of the public they interact with. And a smattering of other stuff.

"When is it more or less safe to open things up to economic activity" isn't fucking rocket science, it's just doing what you should be fucking doing in the face of a goddamn plague. Which is known behavior. There's just a lot of fucknuts that don't want to bloody do it.

Speaking of that, this buttered noodles thing I've started messing with is... surprisingly good. Better than I was expecting the first time I tried it. Current attempt is excess yakisoba box noodle thing with butter and pepper and some cheese and bacon bits and honey turkey. Is pretty okay, and for whatever reason it feels less filling than the noodles normally do.

Things are starting to look somewhat hopeful over here.

For more than a week, hospital admissions and death numbers have been dropping.
Yesterday saw only 69 dead and 75 new hospital admissions. One day before that, there still were 83 dead and 110 hospital admissions.

The total number of confirmed corona deaths in the Netherlands is now 3751
Just. Is there any indication the unconfirmed ones are also stabilizing?

If there's a single thing consistent about almost every country's response it's been not fucking testing enough to have a genuine finger on the pulse of the crow plague. Reductions in confirmed deaths and/or hospitalization figures are only particularly comforting if other indicators, what little is available to track unrecognized cases, are following a similar course and there's no substantial indication of a second (or third, or whatever) wave incoming.

Maybe the Netherlands are actually staying on top of things on that front, I'unno, but at the moment basically nothing about official numbers brings me any goddamn comfort whatsoever, and I can't see that changing until legitimately aggressive testing and tracing efforts are implemented. Garbage in, garbage out -- your data is at best as good as your data collection.

Hasn't it repeatedly been shown like every time someone bothers to try to check that the younger/youngest generations aren't skewing right, basically at all?

Notepad++. If you're going to self-flagellate, at least use the better striking rod.

The argument that "faith" is a hoop to jump through is a specious one.
Why?
Because it is essentially arguing that faith is works; it's re-defining words to be argumentative.  "Belief" is not a "work."
And belief that has no meaningful impact on your behavior is at best piss weak to the point it barely exists, if at all. If your faith is so empty it has no outwardly observable effect on you, there's essentially no difference in you having it and not. You could say that God would know the difference, but there's something of a paucity of gods in religious works that give any indication of giving a damn about that much of a "difference".

Faith isn't a hoop you jump through, but if your faith doesn't make you start jumping hoops whatever it is you got ain't faith. Ain't no religious figure in existence known for doing nothing but sitting on their ass, yo'. Even Buddha stepped out from under the bodhi tree. You can't separate faith from works any more than you can separate it from belief.

Yep, also I wonder if other animals got hallucinations with LSD before humans existed, or was it not produced in a part of a plant that they could reach?
Other animals got jumped up on stuff prior to humans being around, sure, if not necessarily LSD. Shrooms and booze been around roughly as long as there's been plant matter to ferment and fungi to grow, maybe longer, and we know for a fact some species'll get inebriated on something or another even without human intervention. Sometimes intentionally, sometimes not.

All I know is I appreciate the canon confirmation of viper brothels. If nothing else, this game can be thanked/cursed for doing that for the Xcom universe.

Better question: If you could have a starship, without significant personal downsides, why not have a starship? Most people that have sailing boats or other sorts of water based small craft need them for precisely sod all.

It's one of the more disappointing things with reality and most of human religions' boring ass creator deities, really. There's plenty of neat shit in the world but if I were a creator deity I'd be putting some priority on having cats vomit rainbows instead of hairballs, y'know? Stuff could be a lot more interesting with little to no increase in danger, but for whatever reason most believers seem pretty comfortable with their gods having seriously dropped the ball on that front.

Finally worked my way through all the little papers full of music titles I had been collecting for the last couple of months. Turned out there were about 80-90 I had marked down for one reason or another. Now most of them are in the music thread, too :D

It is encouraging though that the number of new admissions is relatively low.

I mean, that'll be encouraging if there isn't a spike commensurate with the reduction in the number of people dying at home. NYC has had something like that happen, iirc. Cases at the hospitals appeared to stabilize or go down, right as the number of "inexplicable" home deaths started crawling upwards :-\

The gray's coming for your balls, man! Flee! Flee mightily! There is no context. Sometimes the mind just goes places.

Wait, shit, are they actually looking like they're going to try that?

I think most I've heard of have been rioting in hopes of getting their government to actually goddamn do something, actually? There's probably exceptions there, but most uunrewt unrest I've heard about has been in response to government inaction/incompetence/malfeasance in relation to plague response.

E: what the hell autocorrupt

Probably not? Might be squeezed into animal cruelty, but mostly it just probably wouldn't be healthy for 'em. Raccoons show up drunk occasionally after eating fermented stuff, apparently (which is sketchy, 'cause it makes them act funny and the first reaction to a funny acting raccoon tends to be to kill it, since major causes of that are infectious to people or pets), but it's not something you'd particularly want them getting into.

It could be root beer or somethin' non-alcoholic, though. The critters have a pretty serious sweet tooth, so they're known to go after soft drinks (which is still, like. Not great for 'em for similar reasons they're not great for us). Anyway. Probably not illegal. Just unkind/unwise.
