General Discussion / Re: AmeriPol thread

I mean, yeah, he definitely can't for the census 'cause the census has basically fuck all to do with the executive. Its handling et al is mostly a congress thing, and that by way of flat out constitutional mandate. Executive order largely can't do shit to it. It can try but by and large everyone involved is entirely and legally able to just go, "Uh, no."

What he's saying he'll do is what government agencies were telling him to do instead of this census bullshit a good year and a half (and however many thousands of dollars of federal funds and who knows how many man hours that could have been doing literally anything else besides dealing with this shit) ago, or thereabouts. That he's saying he'll go through with it is part of why it's only somewhat of a victory for people who aren't colossal sacks of shit, but overall it's still definitely a flat out loss for him and the GOP.

He's not backing down without backing down, though. He's been shitkicked and is now in abject retreat and bloviating about it. That it doesn't mean that GOP efforts to fuck the american population, citizens very much included, via demographic data manipulation are going to stop makes things so it's only sorta' good, though. Not so much good news as less-bad news.

Yet another constitutional crisis would probably just be day N+1 of the shitgibbon's administration. Avoiding that is just kinda' meh. The census not getting fucked with in a particularly blatant way is a good thing. Everything else involved tilts it more towards silver living rather than clear skies. So good-ish news.

Oh hey. Trump's given up on the census thing, apparently. Got his shit pushed in so hard he's trying to spin doing what was recommended over a year ago as some kind of victory. Good-ish news, I guess.

Oh. Apparently they're already issuing evac orders for parts of Louisiana. Winds still aren't expected to be super strong (we'll just hope that lasts instead of doing another ha-ha-fuck-you-have-an-overnight-cat-4-plus) but the rain is shaping to be flood hell. The thing's moving slow, and already dumping water pretty hard.

She was a business major with a minor in philosophy, that was apparently looking into law school. Paperwork was probably a way of life prior to this new way of life. Some processes you don't forget, much including triplicate.

E: ... also, the character design on oscar (and his crew) is kinda' amazing. Might be my favorite design of what I've read of the webcomic, so far.

Hurricane season started a bit ago, dinnit?

Any case, all we can do where I'm at is hope nothing decides to come visit again. Whole region is still largely picking up the pieces after michael and another coming in would... not be good. At all.

We actually have shit that asks about citizenship, anyway. There's other national surveys besides the main census.

Beyond that, at pretty much goddamn no point in the history of the census has the point of the thing been to enumerate citizens. It's always been a tool to identify raw number of bodies as accurately as possible, and pretty much anything that gets in the way of that is undesirable.

We're aware and the bloody GOP has been aware since day one adding a citizenship question to the thing would get in the way of that, up to and including depressing numbers even among actual citizens (which is zero surprise when the GOP's jackbooted asshattery has been shitting on them as well as migrants of all stripes).

Far as I can recall the Constitution doesn't apportion representatives based on number of citizens, anyway. The article that leads to the census itself just mentions free persons, untaxed indians, and "others", since they apparently didn't have the balls to call slaves slaves. Citizenship wasn't on the menu to begin with (and gods, why would they even give a flying fuck about immigration status at the point the thing was written? Most of the folks writing it would have been first or second generation immigrants themselves), and considering the amount of non-citizens (documented and otherwise) representatives are supposed to be governing over and otherwise, y'know, representing, it probably shouldn't be.

Other Games / Re: Games for more than 4 players at a LAN party

Yeah, with SC2 I would like totally friggin' avoid the base gameplay. To hell with that nonsense, same as it used to be/still is with WC3. Go with custom maps that aren't competitive, or are team based or whatever. I'm thinking of this one astroid thing offhand that's pretty neat and for two teams of four, ferex. Can't remember the name, though. Still there's some fairly robust stuff for the engine these days for group sizes like you're talking about, and iirc the arcade or whatever it is is straight up free these days.

... also yeah with worms I'd probably look into spinoff/similar stuff more than the actual worms games. Pretty sure I remember there being some pretty wild junk in that general area, maybe through mods or somethin'.

At which point the robber doesn't bother to eat, and just shoots and leaves. News stations around the world are later befuddled by the gun toting panda.

Starcraft custom maps, or things of similar nature? If it's not actually lan but just online, that might have some stuff to look into.

Aside from that, there's apparently a handful of smash brothers riffs on PC these days, though I'm less certain about over 4 players. Soldat exists, as does a bunch of Worms-like games that might work out. Might look into something like Human, Fall Flat (though again I'unno how many of those sorts of co-op physics based games go for >4). It's been a while since I fiddled with anything particularly multiplayer, honestly...

... since when? Far as I've noticed pelosi is entirely aware substantiative bipartisanship is dead and buried. She'll get GOP folks on board if possible (particularly on minor stuff) but is pretty damn cognizant of how possible that is without indulging in heinous shit probably directly aimed at major democratic constituent blocs.

You might be confusing her with biden, somehow?

Of course, outside the opinion smear piece, the source it drew that comment from also has commentary about Pelosi having cared about stuff like single payer for literal decades. I'm pretty sure it's less an issue of being pressured to care, and more about being pressured towards specific solutions, to the extent there's anything as strong as resentment to begin with.

As far as I'm aware there aren't many democrats particularly pissed off at AOC (or most of the further left wing of the party, for that matter) at all. Occasionally irritated over specific issues, but generally they're on the same side and same page.

How to flush doom monster out of volcano it's hiding in: Nuke it. Literally drop a man-portable nuclear bomb into the volcano and detonate it. Can't hide in a volcano if there's no volcano left!

... might actually be the first part of this monster paradise thing that's a legit gift to read, ha.

Because calling them on it gets a chorus of "FALSE EQUIVALENCE!" ??

(because you know, mentioning that they are just as bad (at not representing their demographic, QED) as the GOP, means that somehow they are just as slimy in all the other ways. Somehow.)
They're not just as bad at representing their demographic as the GOP, though. At all. They're not perfect and they cater to more than one demographic, but once a-fucking-gain they're not nearly as bad as the GOP that regularly goes out of its way to fuck over regions they have political control over, along with everything else they can get their hands on.

Framing sidelining four votes out of 240-ish as ignoring public sentiment is pretty bullshit, too, though. That's not the democrat old guard capturing the process, that's the majority of the bloody party deciding something was the best option they had at the time.

E: In any case, for some actual news, it seems the lawyers working the census citizenship question are being replaced. To all appearances because they were basically stick-a-fork-in-them done, and now the shitgibbon's administration is flailing about in response.
