General Discussion / Re: Food Thread: Kitchen Chemistry

Git bumped, food thread!

Today is good, too. Fried potato... soup? Chowder? Stew? Something. It looks like thick soup or chowder, but there's no milk, just butter and cheese, so... anyway.

Airfried diced potatoes (2, russet) with black pepper/paprika/chilli powder seasoning mix and olive oil (360f for 21 minutes), then put in pot, covered to top of potatoes in ~50/50 unsalted chicken broth and water, and boiled at about half strength for another 25 minutes, adding ~2 servings of butter (something like two tablespoons, I think?) and some parsley at the 10 minutes remaining mark, then a bit of shredded cheese at 7/5/3 minutes remaining, along with a couple slices of shredded up honey smoked turkey at the 3, stirring occasionally.

Topped with some bacon bits, and it's... well, it's good. Not hard to make, either. Probably be better if I had, like... milk or something to make it a proper chowder or whatever (and maybe peeled the potatoes; it's good as is, but I think the texture'd be a bit better with something else done to the skin), but heck, it's good enough.

E: ~2 weeks later, frumple has discovered what happens if you add some brown sugar to buttered pepper/curry beef ramen and it is amazing. Put in slightly too much, but it's just. Nearly perfect. Almost the exact blend of savory and sweet that's basically my favorite taste in the world. Slightly less and it'll be right on target and I might have to stop cooking it out of fear of never eating anything else.

Exact makings... did cup of unsalted chicken broth and cup of water for base, once it started boiling added a serving of unsalted sweet cream butter and generous amounts of curry powder and black pepper. Boiled for 4 minutes (mostly due to starting the timer a bit before it actually started boiling), then put in bowl with ~ 1/3rd a seasoning packet and about as much brown sugar (recommendation, 2/3rds to 1/2 the amount of sugar to beef seasoning). Dumped in some diced up chicken nuggets for meat and it's just. Almost the platonic form of "frumple's favorite noddle dish".

I've been experimenting off and on with putting brown sugar in stuff lately, and apparently I really need to keep doing it because results so far have been "okay" to "I might consider murder if you try to take this from me".

I mean... they're a largely right-wing stateside protestant group, so... as an organization they're at least somewhat evil, by most heuristics for the term. Not particularly intensely evil, but it's a passel of groups with a history of nasty shit that's pretty much guaranteed to keep doing and supporting a disproportionate amount of nasty shit going forward *shrugs*

They're better than the southern baptist convention, at least!

My cat's shit out stuff with better moral turpitude than that mess, though, so...

I mean, if you stick a laptop in a geriatric jackass's brainpan, things are going to go wrong.

Finally built the pinnacle yoyo of the moomoo yoyo mod in terraria, the Convergence. It's a yoyo built from 24 other yoyos, the tip of a pyramid of string and pain.

Its ability, the special sauce this entire mod built towards?

Rather than launch a particularly special or powerful yoyo.

It.

Launches every single yoyo it's built from, complete with every counterweight, every extra yoyo from the glove or trick accessories, everything.

I didn't check to see what it did before trying it out, so when I pressed the button and
Spoiler: this came out? (click to show/hide)
The absurdity of it got a laugh from me.

Oh, I'm fine, personally. Worst we've seen/are expected to see here is like 40 mph gusts and a few inches of rain; we've had worse non-supercell thunderstorms this year, basically.

Folks east of me are kinda' fucked, though. Idalia's apparently hit cat 4 and it hasn't quite made landfall yet. Mostly just hoping it doesn't do the full michael and omnifuck the area it hits with cat 5 winds... cat 4's bad enough -- anything over 2 is going to cause substantial damage where it hits worst, anything over 3 is going to be fucking devastating -- but cat 5 is like someone taking an angry drunken lawnmower to your skyline. At least with cat 4 it'll probably only be drunk :-\

Though this rapid intensification thing... I can't remember if it happened more than this, but at minimum this is the second time this has happened to florida in the last five years. At this point, I think you're probably safest just assuming every hurricane going through the gulf is a cat 4-5 and acting accordingly. The lower category hurricanes are relatively harmless outside of flooding/storm surge, but... we can't even somewhat reliably predict storms are going to stay those anymore, apparently :-\

E: Any case, it turns out "behold the sun" was an entirely too apt moniker for a storm. Giant ball of hate destroying everything it touches. That's the sun, a'ight.

Bump 'cause Idalia's going to hit land somewhere in the next six or seven hours. If any of y'all are in the way, you still got some time to gtfo, I think. Stay safe, regardless.

Currently, uh. The entire states of Florida, Georgia, North and South Carolina, and at least Virginia are under marginal to [either moderate or high] (I can't friggin' tell 'cause they're showing as the same color on NOAA's map for some ungodly reason) risk of flash flooding in the next 48 hours. East coast 'bout to get goddamn soaked.

Incidentally, this is the strongest hurricane to hit that particular portion of the Florida coast in recorded meteorological history; we haven't had a cat 3+ one go through the appalach bay since at least the 1800s, probably earlier. In other words, this is a literally historic storm for the state. Here's hoping the damage isn't equally historic :-\

... so is there any context to that, or what? Looks like someone got stabilized by oxygen and then refused further care once they were coherent enough to do so, with the first line covering whatever costs were involved with that.

E: Though an idle lookabout suggests it might have been a weewoo wagon call, where they stabilized someone on-site with ox and then were sent off. It's unfortunately common for ambulance calls to get charged like that, even if they don't do super much; the price is for the mobilization more than anything.

From what I've heard of ambulance calls, they're probably lucky there wasn't another 0 in that price :-\

... just to check, but you're aware, like. That second link is saying exactly what hec did?

Still, happy thread ain't the place for another argument on 2nd amendment, regardless of how relevant it isn't considering it's actual history. Take it somewhere else, probably.

Pet cones they... they have an actual formal name. They're not just the, well. Obvious. Pet cone. I never knew.

... the worst part about it is their official name is apparently Elizabethan Collar. I have lost respect for the pet cones this day :-\

A few times a year, yes.

At least at the moment, it sorta' looks like it'll hit to the east of me, personally, but, well. There's like an entire day and a half to change course, and I'm definitely inside the current advisory area, just... off to the side. Which isn't saying that much considering that's currently like a third of the state or somethin'.

Prediction when I posted last didn't have it hitting major hurricane levels, but hey, that's changed. Surprise! I mean, not actually a surprise, but... still. Likely to hit cat 3, now the question is does it go higher, and if so... second cat 5 of the last decade to hit florida?

Let's hope not :-\

491
Cat 3 or lower plz :(

... though, like. They were talking about record breaking water temps down south not too long ago, so. NOAA forecast doesn't currently look like it's expected to break 110 mph winds, but that thing could intensify fast enough to break someone's neck and hard enough to knock over a bunker.

Here's hoping it's relatively mild :-\

E: And yup, there's weather.gov noting, hey, yer in the potential impact area, keep an eye on the news. Blech.

I am interested in growing my hair longer but don't have much clue in how to care/style it.

I am born male, white; and currently only wash daily with anti-dandruff shampoo.  I try to brush it more often now so it's not a total mess.
Wash as needed and tie it up with a hair tie. Hard to go terribly wrong with a simple low tail, heh. Conditioning is... more to preference -- I actually don't like how floofy the stuff makes my hair, so I just use shampoo, ferex. Hair spray or gel will definitely make it easier to style, but... at least in personal experience, that shit makes your hair feel just absolutely goddamn terrible. Like someone replaced your noggin' cover with dried out straw. Would not recommend.

Best advice if you're going any route that involves hair ties, though? Hair dresser suppliers sell that stuff in 100+ packs. Get a couple years worth in one go, for cheaper than usual per unit.

I mean. Noise music? Probably the closest thing I can think of to "hardest music in existence". Stuff sounds like fornicating industrial machinery, most of the time.

Yeah, I'm just imagining some kid trying to pick up one of those mice by the scruff of the neck like a kitten or something and the scruff just... coming off.

Poor little bastard would probably be traumatized. which poor little bastard? Yes.
