Honestly I think half the reason Americans don't like veg is the Southern style of preparation, namely "boil it all until it's mush". You can really see our Scottish roots there.

The other half, of course, is that we've got multiple generations of people conditioned to like food that's packed with absurd amounts of salt and artificial sweeteners + an abnormal perception of what healthy portioning of meat is relative to other components of a meal.
Hey now, there's southern style prep that ends up with non-mushy vegetables. Also plenty of stuff that's fairly slim on the meat to other junk ratio.

... the absurd amount of salt et al totally is a thing, though. It's something of a sumbitch to get through to someone raised on that kind of food to get them to understand you're not necessarily cutting down on salt much if all you're doing is no longer adding extra. Also even when the relative proportions are fairly in line the total tends to be up there. I think I blame the puritans for that one, really. Easier to eat smaller meals when you're more able to stop working to eat.

It's possible congress might refuse to pass a budget that includes 2 days of back pay for those who were on the clock during the shut down... but I really don't think even they would be stupid enough to do that. As it is the pay check which would be missing any pay hasn't been written yet.
I mean... you'd think, but the GOP already rejected a bill to fund the military through a shutdown once this go around. Still got room for it to happen.

E: Though I guess the question now is what happens in three weeks when it's time for the telegraphed and inevitable betrayal. Can kinda' understand it with six years of chip and a loudly televised promise to actually bringing a daca bill to vote (never mind both should have happened months ago), but at the same time mitch in particular, never mind the rest of the GOP involved, is less trustworthy and consistent than my grandfather's bladder.

Is anyone else having an issue where a youtube video will lose its buffer if you switch to another window? That's really annoying.
I haven't been able to watch youtube videos on the actual site since they fully discontinued flash support, m'self. HTML5 video performance is utter and complete shite on any computer I have access to. Friggin' kindle runs the stuff more smoothly and it does wonky things on the resolution side of it.

... incidentally, at the absolute least some of the newer media player classic versions can load youtube urls. Been using MPC-BE lately. There's an occasional hiccup, but it runs most things and can handle playlists, too, so it's pretty functional.

C'mon ree, get with the times. This was clearly clinton's fault. Obama's, like, yesterday's fad.

E: Though I guess it could have been turtleman holding a knife to the throat of the manufacturer's most treasured kitten. Threatening small helpless things with death to make stuff more expensive is apparently mitch's shtick nowadays.

There's folks I could call if it gets that bad, fortunately. Also fairly sure I could still make the drive to the nearest ER if it really came down to it. Pretty fucked up right now (much harder to fall over if you're sitting or laying down!) and it's a 20-30 minute drive, but it's also rural traffic with enough elderly (and farm equipment) around folks largely know how to deal with someone going slower than normal without killing anyone.

... honestly, I don't even know if uber reaches out here. Probably, but I've never checked.

E: also I totally just remembered the "press on upper lip to prevent sneezing" thing. Wonder if it works on coughs...

E2: initial testing is leaning towards maybe! This may be a bad idea from a congestion point of view but if my throat can get some time off to put down the knives I think my quality of life would notably improve...

Sudden and fairly brutal cough. Last night I was feeling pretty shit 'cause my appetite had tanked for the better part of two days but other than hunger and headache mostly okay, this morning my throat decided it was going to see if it could simultaneously cause my throat and my side to tear and bleed/bruise. Intensity has spaced out a bit by now (nightfall), but it's not getting much less intense. Just about made my throw up a few minutes ago, because all a throat needs besides mucus and contractions rubbing it raw is gastric acids coming to join the party

... hopefully this shit'll chill fairly rapidly, 'cause this is just about the worst cough I've had in like the last decade or two. Legit starting to get worried this is going to cause me to start coughing bits of blood, bleh. Also, after this, it's probably time to take the likely source back to the doctor. Been out of it enough I haven't noticed it they were taking their antibiotics appropriately, but they've been coughing now for like... three, four weeks, maybe, and getting intermittent spats of it since like... september or some shit. Finally appears to have got everyone else in the house, which means the stubbornness about getting a doc to deal with it is about to get kicked into the shitter. just as soon as the fever and coughing cuts out enough I can walk without having to hang on to the walls or whatever is handy to avoid hitting the ground head instead of foot first

*waggles hand* He has people he works with and hasn't betrayed (much/yet) in business. Probably people that has enough blackmail on him (and vice versa) the relationship's fairly steady. Less sure about allies, heh.

... though most of the GOP leadership doesn't seem to be particularly sanctity-of-marriage kinda' folks, either, for what it's worth. Probably guess the not playing ball thing causes more of a problem than that kinda' stuff.

Candy is nice, but I think the implied turtle dong would be a net negative for most folks. Grab the candy and run, I guess.

More realistically he's snubbing McConnell, though why Trump is so utterly persistent in the public persecution of his allies I'll never know.
Well, step one is him not thinking of them as allies. Not entirely sure trump understands the concept to begin with, at least in the way most people do.

... I mean, I guess if you've given up on doing your job there's worse ways to spend your time? Could be waving candy at interns and trying to get them to step into his new van or something.

... if you're going by that description of things, law period doesn't exist. No law exists beyond the point something enforces it. Scale is pretty irrelevant.

Which would roughly mean legal and illegal are nonsense words with no meaning, and you can use them to describe adherence to international treaty as much as you please. You could also use them to refer to loofahs, I guess. Most people are pretty comfortable using 'em to describe treaty violating actions rather than bathing accessories, though, since the only particular difference between international treaty violations and your neighborhood ones is who's involved.

I'unno, has rodman or whoever it was died yet? If not, get 'em to shack up in the oval office for a few days or something. Could probably lob some ballistic tests towards cuba or somewhere appropriate, too. Plenty of room left to sink.

End of the day, there's probably Kim wozzname cosplay suits floating around. Between that and the makeup artists the POTUS should be able to hire if they really want to, trump could probably do a pretty accurate rendition. Dunno if he's the right height, but if not there's always stilts or hacksaws.

Oh wow. Just noticed the tweet mitch made on the 19th. With that thing existent I think the GOP is going to have trouble framing this as the dems taking hostages. Even if it was the only thing to be found.

Though I'unno about that last bit, baff (well, the pre-edit last bit). Depends a lot on the area, sometimes the time of year. Plenty of places have less than zero difficulty replacing a tenant, and it's not the most rare thing a landlord has some degree of difficulty letting the payment slide for too long even if they know money's coming later (never mind issues with other things). Particularly if they do have replacement tenants actually able to immediately pay lined up.

Hell, there kinda' is stuff like that in the US...

... it's just conditional on government support/funding for the property owners to agree to it :V

What happens if a government employee cannot pay his rent due to prolonged shutdown? Can they be evicted, or is there some legal protection against that for government shutdown times?
They can be evicted, yes. There's not much of the US economy terribly enthusiastic about IOUs, least when there's not interest attached to it, and most of the parts that have interest attached to it don't exactly like statements like "I'm not getting paid and don't know how long it will last."

Incidentally, it usually takes a while to get on something like SNAP (i.e. food stamps), particularly when much of the relevant offices happen to be understaffed or closed.

... also most government workers are pretty normal so far as american workers go, fiscal security wise. Which is another way of saying they live mostly paycheck to paycheck and there's not many pay cycles (i.e. months) of window available before things start fairly rapidly turning dire for them

Basically, if you're assuming any of this has much in the way of protections in place for directly effected workers during the period the shutdown is ongoing, you've made a common mistake for those unfamiliar with the USA of thinking there's reasonable forethought involved in any of the processes involved, on that front. Because there isn't. The closest to it is for essential personnel that are still working. Everyone else is kinda' up the proverbial shit creek, and the department that issues paddles wasn't classified as essential.

I really doubt it'll last a week, looks like they can fix this within 48 hours. They'll punt it to February and then I bet they'll punt it to March where that debt ceiling is lurking.
Like, it'd probably be for the better if it didn't last even a week, but so far as being able to fix it within 48 hours, well. Able and going to are different turns of phrase.

Considering the last however many months now this CR stuff has been going and how long before that the GOP in particular has been shitting the bed regarding making a budget, I'd wager there's room to be concerned someone's going to manage to crit fail bridging the difference between those turns of phrase. Again.

E: Oh, neat, there's a new bill proposed along the same lines as during some of the old shutdowns, calling for (future) congress(es) to not get paid during a shutdown. Maybe pigs'll fly and it'll actually get voted on this time.
