General Discussion / Re: AmeriPol: Government shutdown looming Friday

Think at least some of the post office stuff keeps running, so you'll probably still get some mail. There's summations about what gets paid or not floating around the net.

Beyond that, well, it depends on how long it lasts. If it doesn't last long (say three weeks or less), probably not much besides some folks kinda' pissed off. It lasts more than a month or two, well, our economy starts getting increasingly fucked (it turns out turning off the paychecks of massive swaths of the largest single employer in the country has some negative effects on the market :V) and we get to experience playing economic chicken with an oncoming global recession train.

Well, that and GOP electoral strategy over the last while have left them with(/chained to) odd notions of what the term "deal" means.

... though, that said, do remember some of the major causes of this have not been politicians for long, and varyingly ran on a platform of specifically being goddamn incompetent not being one. It's entirely possible there actually is some stuff somewhere being naivety and willful sodding ignorance going on, since some of the folks involved effectively aren't politicians in any way outside of having been elected.

It's apparently perhaps surprisingly common for older folks to be fairly active on social media, for what it's worth. Seem to recall it not being twitter that much, but even folks not exactly tech savvy can pick up how to leverage a website or two.

And yeah, a proper budget would be great. It'll probably happen about the same time the dems get a congressional supermajority and either the presidency or enough seats to override a veto. Until then you'll have kludges, CRs, and republican attempts to "downsize" that are about as much budget as renal failure is healthy kidneys. Unless something really odd happens to the GOP politician pool and their attitudes towards government, anyway.

Somehow just about every time I finally scrounge up the energy and persistent recollection of intent to do a bit more on the whole jobs/survival/etc. side of things is also the time folks around me decide it's a good time to dump a few hundred pounds more pressure and stress on the process because it's taken however long it's been to reach that point. It's like the moment I start trying to dig myself out of this fucking hole my body's stuck in, god or whatever sends a signal out to the world saying it's time to start piling extra shit on everything.

Was almost feeling some vague approximation of enthusiastic yesterday/earlier today. Starting to get some stuff squared away, noticed some potential opportunities of interest(/sufficiently minimal requirements I can maybe actually do it as fucked up as am) and didn't forget them within a twelve hour window, etc.

Now I just have what's probably a tension headache from hell with an extra side of exhaustion and loss of appetite. Because no, person, however well intentioned it is what you're hung up on actually doesn't fucking help much these days when your work history is barely existent and shit for your age to boot, and being reminded for that Nth time how fucked the situation is doesn't actually help much. Schooling only goes so far when you have a multi-year gap in employment, next to no experience, and fairly significant capability issues. Also even if you want to help, I've been slowly getting the finance processing dumped on me and know pretty damn exactly the extent that's actually on the table.

Extra bonus points, half the reason this is as much of a mess right now is because I really don't have it in me to split my attention much, and if I focus on that side of things I start sliding on even managing what goddamn little I do (which is some fucking how generally more than everyone else involved that actually has resources/means/etc. that are secure) to keep the other folks here from dying sooner.

It'd be nice if I could figure out how to get help beyond what amounts to temporary shelter and sustenance. Something beyond the empty assurance (followed by little to no actual involvement) that I'm capable of what amounts to hospice care despite no training, no energy, and poor health, on top of getting myself in better shape despite having no resources not gifted (and not nearly enough of those to make headway without asking the gifters to fucking bankrupt themselves) and what consistently ends up being no means to get societal assistance, and securing a future despite the cavalcade of shit that has been much of my life having a damn good go at crippling my ability to do so. Because clearly after as many years as it's been of failing to do any of that, I'm somehow going to manage it going forward despite conditions only getting worse.

... s'just kinda' one of those things. Admitting there's a problem is called the first step, but it doesn't exactly help much where everywhere and every time you look for a step 2 the response roughly equates to "fuck you, maybe call back when you're actually homeless and entirely and visibly crippled".

How are they even nearing a shutdown while the republicans control the president, the house AND the senate?
It's called an ideological commitment to destroying the government, on top of the decades of media manipulation coming home to roost and probably a dozen other things. Turns out when you put a bunch of people who have neither the intent nor capability to govern in charge of governing things, they have trouble governing even their steady sabotage of america's capability to govern itself.

It's at lot easier to fuck up someone else's efforts than direct your own, basically. When you cultivate a talent set and organizational structure built entirely on fucking up other peoples' efforts, you tend to find out about all they're good at is fucking up people's efforts and now you're the one receiving credit for all the efforts they inevitably fuck up. Whoops.

... well, sorta' whoops. End of the day this kind of barely/not functioning government is the goal of a lot of the GOP. Spend so much time insisting government can't work and you start making yourself (into) a self-fulfilling prophecy, unfortunately for everyone around you.

Whereas previous shutdown crises have been a result of Tea Partiers holding a gun to the head of the country to exact concessions, this time looks more like this scene out of Blazing Saddles (warning: NSFW)
Unless I missed something, isn't it still basically tea partiers holding a gun to the head of the country to exact concessions? Last I noticed the major hangup to getting at least yet-another-CR through was mostly freedom caucus critters, which are close enough to tea partiers for government work. Just dunno how well concessions describes what they're after.

... though part of that uncertainty is because I've forgotten what the hell they're screeching about this time. Eh.

That, aye. Takes a bit before it's more than just staggeringly annoying, maybe a bit more if you're one of the ones still getting paid or at least getting IOUs. Still screws with a hella' bunch of people, but it's a boiling frog sort of screwing.

Oh hey, looks like the transcript of another fusion gps interview's been released. This time with the house intel committee. 31 meg pdf for the main one, with a smaller one that looked vaguely like simpson's lawyers bludgeoning the committee into better behavior. Wish I had more familiarity with this stuff, so I could tell if the latter actually looked as much like something able to catch arson charges as it seemed.

Debt ceiling's more of a problem, but it's "just" government shutdown on the table at the mo', iirc. Effects of that is something of a question, but the answer mostly boils down to how long it lasts and who gets blamed (generally whoever has the presidency, followed by whoever has congressional majority, and wouldn't you know...). The country's largest single employer mostly not being able to pay employees certainly has just a wee titch of political effect, heh, that gets less wee titchy the longer it goes on.

... also you only wished no one wants the US to default. There's a few congresscritters that've been open and to all appearances sincere about wanting it to happen, if I'm not misremembering.

More than that, the dems've already proposed a bipartisan budget and expressed willingness to hash things out if the GOP is willing to come to the table with even a facsimile of good faith. The response has appeared to be a "fuck you" followed by persistently fornicating themselves.

Can't recall any shutdown risk in my lifetime that wasn't driven by republican bullshittery either more than anything or outright entirely. Hell, last I heard the primary reason we're looking at this shit at all this time is because the GOP can't even manage internal consensus after kicking the can down the road for... how long has it been, now? Most of this administration to date? Longer?

If there's blame to be placed on the dems for this crap, it's about as much as you place on a pedestrian for getting mowed over by a drunk running a red light at 20+ mph over the speed limit.

DS9's parked in front of a galaxy bridging wormhole that has a monodirectional-ish opening, near as I can recall. Its military importance comes mostly from that (and whatever being able to skimp on engines lets them load up also baldboss is like a demigod or somethin' I'unno things got weird). It's difficult to find chokepoints in space, most of the time, but authorial fiat can manage it.

... anyway, two more days 'till shut down. Anyone heard anything new on that front? Last I noticed the GOP was doing its freedom caucus backstabby thing while multiple democrat representatives are openly considering going, "Hey, y'know what. You guys can't get your stuff together, maybe we return some favors and decline to help y'all unfuck your mess."

... and today we begin watching the unfolding tale of Kaim Argonar and his Quest to Break Goddamn Everything. No miscellaneous teapot top thing unkicked, no wall paneling unremoved, no delicate standing structure untoppled. Truly it is a legend of persistent vandalism, witnessed in unruffled awe by idle military, police, and world leaders.

Today I am reminded why many RPGs are kinda' low key in animating its shrubbery hidden trinkets. To do otherwise looks faintly ridiculous, and in a somewhat jarring way.

Game's lost odyssey. No clue what I'm getting into, but the first half hour-ish looks like steampunk magitek meets punch magic fantasy meets notably excessive hats. This makes me pretty optimistic about it, even if the execution turns out to be sketchy.

... also I appreciate how the silly hat guy in heavy armor in the beginning comments on kaim's stereotypical JRPG male protagonist (i.e. would perhaps not look out of place on a stripper) outfit. We too don't know how he survived the apparently-meteor induced lava apocalypse from the sky with most of his midriff bare and not even a non-silly hat, much less a silly one.

E: sweet baby jesus you can cut the homosexual undertones in this thing with a knife

please don't look so intensely and speak of trust like that to the bish protag, probably villain supporting character that looks like a professional wrestler

also hisoka what the hell are you and your pedophile gay clown ass doing here

what the blazes am I walking into

You've clearly never been directly exposed to the US healthcare system, then :P

... less tongue in cheek, folks are just expanding on what said doctor said actually means, since it can easily not be obvious to someone that hasn't actually been exposed to the sort of testing being talked about.

I'd trust that sort of doctor/test more, too, everything else being equal. Which should probably be obvious considering I piped up talking about a similar interaction with that sort of doctor... albeit one paid far less and with much less incentive to softball what they're saying.
