All these words and somehow nobody mentions the mercenary inclined hippomen. Respect the giff, yo', lest they shoot you in the face with fantasy flintlocks.

... also, my total actual exposure to spelljammer has been a couple of the books. There was at least one trilogy written! Pretty sure they started on krynn, got raided by illithids, and things went from there. Mindflayer space pirates, man. Forgotten realms baddies coming for dragonlance gnome brains. Pretty sure it was primarily gnomes, anyway, though the MC was human and primary-ish secondary character giff. Most badass hippoman to ever grace the krynn setting. Also possibly the only hippoman that ever graced the krynn setting in novel form, I'unno.

Any case, there could stand to be more spelljammer games. Pretty sure I've never played the one, and mindflayer spelljammers with modern production values would probably be amazing.

I think the Dark Sun series are more action orientated, going from the screenshots.
Dark Sun pair are also top down turn based. Definitely a lot of fighting, but there's plenty of content overall and they're pretty ruddy interesting imo. Never got around to playing the sequel much, but I beat the first one not too long after it released, I think. So far as that particular time frame goes for those sorts of RPGs, I'd honestly rate DS1 as one of the best.

DS2 I keep getting distracted by other stuff, which is somewhat understandable considering I didn't find out about it until like a decade after release. General reaction to it seems to be that it's better in a lot of ways, but also had a pretty buggy release that didn't get much fixing until fans took a crack at it, and is a bit janky on that front still, despite the eventual attention.

Anyway, they're pretty solid top down RPGs from the 90s era. That the setting is one of the more unique is just icing, heh.

Oh ho ho, I'm not sure if a mod changed it, but what the vortex does isn't antigravity, it's inconsistent gravity. Honestly, I think the pure antigrav is substantially less annoying, heh. Particularly it you already have wings and/or a way to prevent fall damage. Scattering platforms around to grapple to keep yourself from floating away seems helpful.

And yeaaah, slime god may be pre-hard mode materials wise but I'm less sure vis a vis difficulty. I've been cheating like a so and so, but that one looked nasty anyway.

Though so far as boss fights I've seen so far go... ignoring the Ragnarok, I think my current vote goes to the overseer hands down. So many projectiles, everywhere, and the thing's perfectly capable of doing in excess of 400 damage if it rams you.

I'unno, interplanetary nuclear exchange sounds suspiciously like there would be a planet left on the other end. Might not be that much of a sure thing. Going to have to crack the mantle, shatter the planet, and launch the remains out of the system at a significant fraction of c.

The specific thing is (or at least started as) russian interference with the election, iirc, and particularly any involvement between the trump campaign team and them. If there were inappropriate campaign funds involved, that would count. If there was something more damning than trump encouraging a hostile foreign power to hack into american systems, it would count. If it's obstruction issues, again, it would count. And so on. The investigation started with a specific-ish point but what it ends up turning up depends on what mueller finds.

Mueller's mandate also includes anything else that might get uncovered during the process of looking into it on top of anything on the specific subject that happens to. So it's not just one thing, per se, and even the one thing can involve a lot of stuff. Special investigators of mueller's stripe have a pretty broad purview in what they can poke at, one of the strongest and most broad investigative positions that exists in this country.

It's not as unintended as you might think. Lingering humpghost gained its millennium spanning fornicative punch magic via screwing his way to minor basically!godhood. Attained phenomenal cosmic power through decades/centuries of tantric rituals, heh. Is author's excuse to why making a pair of late teens/early twenties folks bang in the middle of a giant death trap mausoleum crawling with casually murderous adventuring punch wizards was amusing to said humpghost.

What the hell book thing. "Their relationship was complicated." Their "relationship" mostly consisted of the leftover ghost of a hyper powered marital artist using ancient punch magic to force them to fuck for the ghost's amusement. And yes, that is pretty much an actually accurate summation. I guess you can use complicated to describe that but I'm not sure that's quite the right sentiment. It's more straightforward but... farcical or somethin'. Absurd. Made more so by rendering trying to hook up with a chick because a ghost made the two bang as complicated.

Book thing is... wu dong qian kun? Checking. Not sure what the title translation is or its meaning, far more sure I don't actually care what the cavalcade of machine gods experienced by the illustrious Dong is actually called. "The predictable golden thumbing of Dong-er" would be a better one, probably. "Dong fingers the world" becomes applicable somewhere in the first few hundred chapter things. Fairly sure it's less meaningful in the original language, but there's always a bit of puerile humor when a major character is actually named Dong.

In retrospect, that I'm still reading after 360 something chapters of Dong is some degree of wtf in itself. These things are weirdly readable but pretty shit writing. Apparently something about that does something for me. It's probably the occasional mountain getting thrown at people, I'unno.

Eh, if you're playing with that revenge gold multiplier, you can always do one of my go-to approaches to that any sort of spelunking conundrums that happen before you have easy/easier ways to deal: Throw sticky dynamite at walls until you find something interesting. Can do it without the multiplier, too, it's just harder to sustain/start up.

Entirely applicable (if maybe messy, but I honestly find the aesthetics of bomb mining to look better than little 2 or 3 tile tunnels burrowing through everything... also much easier to navigate through later, if needed) until you get the giga impact drill from the blacksmith (which has a right click that fires no-ammo block destroying rockets -- neat trick, by the way, if you do a quick left click drill before firing the rocket, you'll put out two instead of one) and/or enough mining speed you're a discount end-game mining mount whatever it is.

If you're handling invasions already, you're probably good to mine up some meteorite, too, in which case I can but repeat the mention of the rocket punch. Pre-wall it's easily one of the best illumination items in the game with these mods running, and can make figuring out where/which direction to dig a lot easier. Its sparks go furthest downward, unsurprisingly enough, but it's got pretty decent horizontal coverage, for what it is.

Oh man, on the subject of moons, wait until you get a blue moon. If you haven't encountered one yet, you're in for a treat. Pretty sure it's post wall, though, or at least if not then it's a freakishly mean thing to do to the player. Tiny advice vis a vis one, try to do your surviving somewhere that souls will spawn. also, I'm pretty sure that unlike blood moon or invasion pillars, where if you go deep enough the effect largely stops, the blue moon's will follow you flippin' anywhere, so there's basically no escape. incidentally, finding a method to make it daytime ASAP isn't a bad idea; there's some easy-ish ones available fairly early, iirc

Good bloody god. When the wiki says the angelic sigil is a rare drop from fallen angels, they mean rare. I just spent seven minutes of a zerg rush potion slaughtering things on a sky island trying to get one to drop. Murdered something like sixty or seventy wyverns in the process. Saw five cloud elementals on the screen at once. Made somewhere close to fifty platinum. Chest I was using to keep the clutter from resulting in too much lag now has 10 stacks of 99 avian cartilage, and gods know how many I trashed once the chest got slam full. Two shy of four 99 stacks of feathers. Over a thousand souls of flight. That was goddamn ridiculous.

... but I got one, finally. Now I get to do this again in the underground hallow, because there's just one chaos elemental drop left between me and both the assassin major range combo item and the flame of the magus, its magic compatriot. Then I'unno. I know how to deal with rare drops, now, and it's up to ten straight minutes of the nearby enemies count being in the upper twenties to mid thirties. Zerg rush potion earns its name.

Also there's totally a bunch of sky drop crap I don't imagine I'll ever have need to farm again :V

E: Sweet baby zeus it's worse underground. You don't see as much, it feels like, since obstructions and whatnot, but instead of hovering around 30 the nearby critter count hovers in the upper seventies. Yikes.

Also to blue hell with sodding moths. Pillar kill and ~5ish minutes remaining on the potion to get drowned in seventy something everything-plague-jungle, and I don't see one of the ruddy things until after the potion ends. Got my gypsy powder, so it's all good and I never have to try to find the ruddy things again (in this world/on this character), but cripes. Friggin' bug.

Heads up, that oak heart thing has at least one extra trick to it. Killing another (or a few more) wraith(s) will drop its companion item. I'unno if it actually makes the thing particularly worth it, but it's somethin'.

Unfortunately(?), the throwing+melee thing isn't terribly sexy until notably past the point the heart's damage is worth squat. There's a bunch of later armors and accessories that spread out their bonuses a bit, and having something that'll double dip, so to speak, can be a pretty significant boost if you itemize for it. That said, there are more items later on that have the same(ish, some are other combinations) effect, if you want to tool around with it once it's a more functioning gimmick.

... man, you sound like you're actually making decent housing. Can't claim that, myself, ahaha. link because that's a half meg file and I can't be arsed to fix that for a forum image, heh

Though re: yoyo, yeeaaah, between those three mods there are a freakish amount of yoyos. Know some are from thorium, but there's definitely more coming from the others, too. There's yoyos for invasions, there's yoyos for specific biomes, post/pre Wall, specific enemies, yoyos for gorram days. All of them kinda' eh :V

I'd almost say try and do the gobbos another time or two, though. As noted, that plasma bolt I mentioned is really good (I was actually using it on the WoF, since again it's one of the few pre-wall means to access armor down debuffs), and there's also a gubbin' you'll eventually want if you didn't have one drop (chaos ember, checking).

And yeah, thorium, at least, does have a few weapons that do summon damage but doesn't use (semi)persistent minions to do it. Want to say there's not many, though, and either pretty late game or just fairly hard to find/build. Also re: thorium, I'm pretty sure you can sneak down to the depths with a bomb or five and get the makings for a block that passively generates water, if you don't feel like bucketing it up. Takes some of the walling down there and aquatite (25:1 ratio, makes 200), but I'm pretty sure they're not explosive resistant... think there's some just in the walls anyway, too.

... also double checking that, it turns out it's quite good the stuff generates water, because I've apparently accidentally'd my eastern ocean. Not entirely sure how I drained the thing, but I've apparently drained the thing. Whoops.

I'unno, while true there also tends to be a fair bit you can do. Mostly base it off incursion, m'self, but a level 1 D&D character can do some pretty impressive stuff relative to a real life human. Also get flattened by a cat, but they can do it while having fancy tricks, if generally not even remotely powerful. Is the magic of death world housepets, I guess.

That said, weak to strong is just... standard. Freakishly standard, as in I'm pretty sure that's literally the trope name (or at least the tag on novelupdates :V). There's high falutin' literature dongles about why it slots into storytelling archetypes and blah blah blah, but it's mostly just a done thing. Contrast or somethin' makes the power high of later bits more noticeable, plus some of that hero saga thing what has a term for I can't remember. Folks are just used to it, used to working with it, and so on.

... that said, game wise it's probably half because they want progress but don't want mid/late game amount and quality of content in the beginning, too. Imagine if you had the normal RPG scaling, but your start was end-game and the finish was sweet zeus. Friggin' post macguffin punch wizard territory* at that point, with sky fingers exploding mountains and the protag beating people with literally a river and crap. Then think about having to make models and animate and code and etc., and realize your funding is not actually the entire US GDP.

Anyway, bunches of reasons it happens so much. Some good, some habitual, some economic. Not just RPGs that do it, it's varyingly standard in a lot of genres and storyboarding styles.

* Martial arts fantasy stuff, less colloquially. Think crouching tiger hidden dragon direction, except intermittent laser eyes and blowing up the occasional planet or whatever. Dunno how much gets officially localized but there's freakish amounts of amateur translation efforts for written stuff and even more freakish amounts of junk to translate so *shrugs*

Hrm. Well, possible assistance venue, if you haven't/think you can manage finding and killing a queen bee, doing that so harpies will start sporadically dropping talons might be helpful. Iirc that can get you something neat or two, primarily a cheapo set of wings. Want to say you can do some interesting stuff with skyplate and particularly clouds, too, if you can hunt up some islands. Also might consider trucking down and nabbing some granite/marble and their fancy glowing counterparts... pretty sure those can get you some good-ish stuff for that early on, and granite in particular isn't terribly dangerous critter wise. Also never forget bombs, heh. Can get you some stuff you otherwise can't mine at the mo'.

Though yeah, starfish are kinda' garbage. As you note, too slow, you'd get better results from brier elementals, never mind something better. Sentry wise... iirc, the ballista in particular can/will help plenty for EoC/etc. fights. Nice extra spat of damage, the piercing can help with critter spawning, and the range on 'em let's you not be as finicky about positioning. The trap-y ones can also be a'ight for taking a chunk out when something charges, I think. Not so sure about the fire 'un -- shorter range, no pierce, etc. Deffo worth getting if you can, basically, and I'm pretty sure you can get one effectively for free so there's not much reason to avoid rolling with one.

E: Oooh, and definitely see about triggering a goblin invasion as soon as you think you can clear it. Think it's the sorcerers that drop something really good for a summoner in the early game. Not a summon item itself, but (the plasma bolt, I think it's called?) rather a low-ish damage magic weapon that inflicts a crapton of debuffs, of which either ichor or broken armor is among them. Tremendous help for upping minion damage, and the rest of the stuff it puts out don't hurt.

Eh? Why not? Use the scourge summon thing, I mean. It's not a bad idea to have mixed summons even if one or two does less damage, just for a variety of attack patterns. Unless it's something specific about the butterfly staff, heh.

... anyway, yeah, post-WoF things get... get. Once you start chipping your way into the content wall of death that is the boss fights. Currently mostly-puttering about with a summon heavy kit, too, just beyond the early game. Possibly I may have some sort of problem, because I have five summoning weapons, three minion granting accessories (and yes, if you haven't met them yet there are a good handful of these, just mostly seem to be post-wall), and two stationary portal/turret things.* Single target damage is kinda' iffy, but I can also more or less suppress anything that isn't a boss within two or three (of my) screens of the player character. Invasions are... amusing. The bar goes up and I don't see most of the invasion at all amusing.

Been setting up large hollowed out areas in pertinent parts of the underground (so far, hallow, spirit ice, desert, dungeon, and jungle), putting a few platforms (most with a chest or two, and I'm working to get safes out to 'em, to make it easier to shuttle drops between them and base). Pirate invasion, iirc, dropped the magnet thing, so I basically park myself in the rough center of the area, drop the two stationaries, then whip out the magnet and wait for whatever it is I'm trying to get to stream into my hands as things die in droves, hehehe. It's nice. Pretty passive unless I'm feeling frisky, but nice.
