General Discussion / Re: LGBTQ+ Thread

... honestly, the only thing I really noticed was it's nice to see someone actually wearing a mask still, so, uh >_>

Out of simple curiosity, where that would be?
Florida, ha. All the other categories are a thing, but it only takes one cat 4 or 5 (and I've been through both at this point, bloody michael) hurricane going over your house to gain a significant appreciation for housing what won't decide to go visit the neighbors quite so easily.

... though in fairness 120 mph winds is only cat 3-ish, which generally isn't that bad. Still don't want to be in its way but it's not go-screw-yourself 4 or 5.

Dry.

... more seriously, I don't think I have one? Can't recall many times any particular building style's really stood out as particularly attractive. Closest would be probably be stuff that's heavily greened, but... nothing really stands out. Do lean pretty heavily away from light/airy glass heavy messes, though. I don't like the skyball of hate, so less of that getting in a building or reflecting pain into your eyes is good.

Well, so far as considering things from an aesthetic perspective goes. From a practical perspective, probably domes. Monolith, geodesic, whatever. There's not much that withstands heavy winds better, and when you live in hurricane territory most other considerations come a distant second, heh. Gimme something that can tank trees falling on it and 120 mph winds and we're good, I don't give a damn what it looks like.

General Discussion / Re: Survey on communication in MMORPG's.
« on: June 29, 2023, 05:42:35 pm »
Heh. From what I understand of polling and surveys, basically no forum is good for survey data. Size and self-selection issues mean they're really bad for reliable data unless you're trying to collect data for that specific community (and even then they're not great). Probably the best thing you can do with them is compare them to actual relatively reliable metrics to show how wildly self-reporting can vary from actual community sentiment.

Still, probably the closest you could get with something like that is either some of the major mmorpg aggregator sites, whatever large-ish gaming forums still exist (B12 doesn't count even a little, ahaha), or by trying at several (dozen) actual mmorpg communities and combining the data somehow or another (iirc there's ways to do that correctly to maintain/encourage reliability, I just don't remember what they actually are, ha).

... anyway, I'll not chime in on the survey because I'm not sure I've played a mmorpg since the 90s or at least early 00s, but regardless, good luck!

Yeah, I got no clue, but if it helps any, from what I could tell checking there's only record of 17 or so Star Trek MUDs still findable online.

List of titles:
TOS TrekMUSH
NewHopeMUSH
Typhon Accords TrekMU
MTrek, the classic Star Trek space battle game.
bDv TrekMUSH
Bold Endeavours
Federation Outpost
New Frontier TrekMUSH
Star Trek Fleets
Star Trek, the Final Frontier
Star Trek: Gibraltar
Star Trek: Legacy
Star Trek: Phoenix Rising
TrekWars MUSH
VoyagerMUD
Where No One Has Gone Before

Most of the (legacy) connection info can be found on the old TopMudSites listing, the first 4 in that list is between Mudlistings and Mudverse. Maybe something will ring a bell.

There's a very long history of racists spreading lies about them being unhygienic/dirty really hard, mostly. It's led to bans and stigma for decades at a minimum.

I'm not even sure if there's still chapters showing up, but "The Dragon, the Hero, and the Courier" is pretty good for a laugh. It's a manga about a mailelf going about their life working for a post office during the early years of the concept even existing, mostly, with a major focus on playing around with ideas on how fantasy-stuff could have realistically-ish interacted with historical medieval/early renaissance life.

One of the hard drives has started failing pretty hard... finally got me annoyed enough to order a new one.

The latest shenanigans? For some reason it's turned most of the drive read only, and is refusing to let me change it off. Plenty of things are still, broadly speaking, working, but updating, say, steam games? Programs installed on the drive in general? Yeah. No, that's currently not a thing. Pain in the bum, but at least storage is pretty cheap these days :-\

Y'all making jokes and not even referencing the true abomination of genetic engineering. Hypotoad would be disappointed.

I feel like if you're worried about legislation, then you know it's potentially dangerous - and therefore probably shouldn't do it.
I'm not actually sure it is, because again, I've never seen it at that scale and in motion (probably mostly just because most folks are entirely too fond of silly things like symmetry and aesthetic cohesion, which is not on the table when you're talking basically random walking lines of inconsistent width across a car :V). Part of looking into it would be checking to see if it's actually enough of a concern it's come up somewhere. It may be that it's not actually meaningfully impactful in the specific use case being considered, in which case it'd just be a pattern I'm really fond of rather than a potential driving hazard, heh.

671
It's not the color that's the primary concern, it's the pattern. Tangles can be borderline or outright hypnotic to look at, and I've never actually seen a vehicle on the road with anything that looks like one, even among pretty wildly painted stuff. It's enough to make me at least mildly concerned there's actual legislation against it.

General Discussion / Re: 2023 Hot Fresh Reading Challenge Thread

Yeah, I'unno. Quick check 'cause I thought I had mentioned something about it earlier (sorta', but nothing specific enough in regards to relevancy to quote) suggests it's something that might be going to come up more than just that scene, so. Yeah.

It's been the better part of a decade since I read it, but I could half-way swear the one that hit particularly egregiously (i.e. it's basically all I remembered about the Codex stuff offhand, heh) was in the second or third of series, though.

The problem I remember wasn't that it was being used to portray any specific character as being irredeemable, but that it was basically being very clearly written to titillate, more or less being used as a cheap theatrics sort of thing in a way that felt pretty off even back then, when I was notably less likely to really notice that kind of thing. Cliffhanger stuff of some of the worst kind, more or less.

At the time I was more or less hardcore trawling through even more junk-tier fanfiction than I trawl through these days, and if you're standing out as concerning compared to that stuff there's probably something wrong, heh. Codex has some fairly strong points otherwise, iirc, but from the search check I was talking about it in the same breath and same way as I was Piers Anthony, which, uh. That's an author dat got some issues, heh.

673
I've noted it somewhere or another before, but a combo system ala Xenogears would slot entirely neatly into a rhythm game design; you enter the note sequence and then let it rip, pretty straightforward design if probably pretty finicky in the details.

Could swear someone's actually done it, or something of similar intent, before, too.

... and by "swear" and "it" I mean I just checked 'cause it was bugging me and there's several different implementations of rhythm game rpg, both turn based and real time, so. Yeah. It's not a new or untested concept, heh.

674
Nothing? Plenty of racing games have some degree of story or plot, iirc there's even a few that's pretty involved. It's not super common or emphasized just due to the games tending to focus on the zoomy bits instead of fluffwork, but it's out there.

... anyway, there's been several racing games over the years with RPG mechanics, as well as various vehicle-themed RPGs, so no, nothing's preventing there from being a racing RPG. I don't really know of any genre or game style that's outright incapable of mixing with RPGs, really.

Most of my immediate family has tats of some sort or another, and for what it's worth, they all recommend starting with something easy to conceal. The stigma regarding tats isn't nearly as bad as it used to be, but it's still not a bad idea to not have them super visible unless you're really comfortable in terms of potential social or financial issues that can arise from having one (especially a bigger one) out like that.

I've occasionally had the thought myself (again, most of my close-ish family does have at least a small one, usually some sort of bird, so...), but I decided a while back I'm not going to do it unless I go hard, majority of body type deal, and I'm definitely not in a position to afford that on any number of levels, heh.

... one of these days I am going to look up laws on vehicle painting, though. I'd love to turn my ride into a purple zen tangle, but I'm not 100% sure it'd be legal, just due to how distracting that sort of patterning can be.
