Hell, that we know as much about the guy as we do when it's been less than 24 hours since the attack is kinda' stretching the boundaries of what you can reasonably expect. More'll get dug up over the next few days, and then we'll either know more or we won't.

I'm a terrible person, my first thought after seeing the "ban guns" and "good luck killing 50 with a knife" was 'trebuchets loaded with knives' and it seems like there are lots of layers of inappropriateness there.
Including poor performance. It's hard enough to kill someone with a flying knife when they're close and you're in relatively precise control, a siege engine induced knife rain probably has worse odds of killing a mass of people than just taking some of the knives and stabbing them by hand.

Any case, if nothing else, can say the LVPD look to deserve some kudos this time. Response time was pretty damn impressive, and it's more than a little likely they stopped a good chunk of people from getting shot up.

It's crazy that even happens at all, but that's the vagaries of the stock market.....
Got nothing to do with the stock market per se. Gun sales just about always jump after events like this one. Ain't even much of a surprise, we've got a lot of people that claim guns make you safer from stuff like this happening, along with all the other cultural artifacts related to firearms. It's not hard to predict that people experiencing stress or fear from an attack like this would want to acquire a totem claimed to ward off the evil with flying bits of metal.

Heh. GOP mouths brushing it off as mental illness, anyway. Then promptly and persistently does damn near everything it can to kneecap the fields related to treating the issues related, wreck attempts towards outreach in hopes of preventing all sorts of shit, and shame attempts to seek help. All while very much intentionally and persistently trying to destroy any and all capability, government or otherwise, to track warning signs.

Either they don't actually think that's the case, are "just" incompetent to the point it's indistinguishable from malice, or for some fucked up reason intermittent mass murder and all sorts of other fuck ups related to the subject are a desired goal. Goddamn republican party being what it is these days, I can't actually tell which or what combination of that it is.

Yes, yes, we've heard that first bit before, and it was as silly then as now. Shown over and over and over that not much beats guns in terms of lethality. Literally, if we're getting the same number of people killed with knives instead of firearms (staggeringly unlikely, even if number of attacks stay the same), we would still be better off by dint of there being less associated injuries.

Impossible to stop isn't impossible to mitigate, basically. Even if you can't get the former more of the latter is pretty damn nice.

6681
It might not hurt, but it's not like those are getting us to do much about infrastructure maintenance/weatherproofing and building regulations either, if that's the desired effect :-\

... yeah, the professional gunsmith that was a family friend wouldn't terribly agree with that last bit. Decent firearm has to be a hell of a lot more tightly engineered than most "basic" stuff if it's going to be worth a damn. Complicated maybe isn't the right word, but it takes more than a little bit of extra care compared to quite a lot of things.

6683
Not. Not easy, is the answer. Especially if you don't want firearms that are likely to be a handheld bomb instead of a gun. Gunsmithing of any sort beyond the very, very trivial is pretty tough, and conversion is sometimes harder than outright building from scratch. Plus basic metalworking tools are going to have a bastard of a time producing decent stuff. Firearms take some specialized stuff (don't think by much, mind, but there's bits that aren't really general use junk that helps quite a bit) or a metric fuckton of experience to produce much in the way of quality, most of the time.

Any case, prez spoke. Actually heard the first broadcast. Content was fairly generic (the religious bits in general were sketchy coming out of trump's mouth, now that I think about it), presentation started bored and transitioned into interchangeable church sermon prayer request. Could have been worse.

'Cause that's the news that gets the most attention. For the vast majority of the human population, often enough even those in fairly rough areas, yesterday was by and large peaceful. "Day was normal for over six billion people" doesn't make much of a headline.

Yeah, things can get done pretty fast on that front, these days. May they be as quick to offer good references in the future.

Welp, not the best stateside monday morning we've had in the last while. Damnit all.

... wish I knew why the hell the shooter and their housemate's names sound so familiar, though. Probably just the memory screwing up or someone local-ish with similar names, particularly since melbourne's a several hours drive off.

Hey, it can take longer than whatever that period is to work through the replacement process, and if it comes to it that process is a lot easier to stop or put on hold than a hole in your workforce. Boss is just being proactive :V

... also you demonstrate one of the reasons a lot of people don't ask whatever their equivalent to HR is about things like that, heh. Even if there's just curiosity rather than intent it's a thing that can get a replacement lined up for you.

6688
Max, if I simply replace the word "Nazi" in your statement with (jew/black/latino/muslim/etc.), then your words would sound a hell of a lot like the very rhetoric the people you are suggesting punching espouse.  And that does NOT strengthen your position, at all.
I'unno, I'm seeing a distinct lack of genocide advocacy or support of individuals who base their personal identity on the pursuit of mass murder. Hard to really say that's not a pretty sizeable gap. The lack of murder or a desire for an end state that results in it is a fairly solid defining feature as rhetoric goes.

You'd probably have better luck equivocating calls for violent resistance against genocide cultists with calls for the active prosecution of violence and murder against minorities with more watered down sorts of white supremacy, really.

6689
Eh, there's certainly concrete steps you can take on that front. Getting the symptoms under control tends to make identifying and/or curing the disease easier. I hear third party watchdogs for police departments help quite a bit, ferex. Body cam stuff helps, too, if kinda' requiring people to stop buying bullshit when the cams just happen to not work for some reason. Infrastructure style stuff (police funding, welfare to reduce possible friction points, etc., etc., etc.) can be done there, too, so long as the will and the money is there to make it happen.

Buncha' crap, really. Complicated shit doesn't tend to lend well to simple solutions, but hitting as many points as you can can work out decently, as things go.

... amusingly/appropriately enough, though, one of the likely causes of that particular disease includes white supremacist infiltration of law enforcement, heh. Certain chunks of our population happen to rather like being able to take advantage of those symptoms and/or make them worse.

And if you punch them, expect to be arrested, because assault is a crime, but being a Nazi isn't.
Eh, technically. Lot of the stuff it entails certainly is, though. Good chunk of what's common for 'em to indulge in when they outnumber someone is, too. As identifiers for likely criminal activity goes, the ones trying to incite violence and having ethnic cleansing and genocide as explicit goals aren't exactly the worst you could roll with.

Any case, if you happen to be on the white/conservative side of things in the US, you'd even have pretty good odds of not being arrested, or dealing with much consequence even if you are. Lotta' folks get a good deal of leeway in this country. Have a beer or two first, be contrite, maybe make sure you're in an area where you know some of the local cops or politicians. You really feel like punching a nazi and largely, if not entirely, getting away with it, you got methods available. Corruption and racism is a hell of a drug.
